It took me too many years of music fandom to realize what you mentioned at the end about being able to ignore the critics opinions on albums and invest time in albums that they ignore or shrug off. Given how deep and important the jazz canon is, it is amazing that some of these albums only have a single "official" review floating around the web. It is sad that too many people may pre-judge some of this 50s/60s music based off of what one single person thought about it after spending a few minutes half-listening to it once 30 years ago.
Extremely torn. I feel like a cool kid to have discovered this great channel before everyone gets in. On the other hand you deserve far more recognition for your knowledge and hard work that you put in to the videos. Thanks for all these series and commentary. Keep up the great work! The subject matter is something I have dove head first into the last couple of years and can not get enough of. Your passion is infectious! Cheers ! Smitty
Yet again, fabulous presentation. Watching this 3 years on since it was made, your words "Put in on, feel it, Dig It" still ring so loud and true. Far too many "experts" are now putting in their nit-picking, half-cocked opinions (and usually it is around which release is better than..) and losing the main purpose- to Dig Jazz! Shep, you are legend!
The Jazz Shepherd you really inspired me this morning. Love your knowledge of jazz so I’m uploading a quick shout out to your channel and some of my more limited jazz knowledge. It will be live e soon.
I have most of Miles catalog up to Jack Johnson, but I continually go back to Blue Haze, a rather obscure, overlooked recording. “I’ll Remember April” is worth the price of admission.
Thank you for introducing us to some great music,. I use amazon music to listen to your recommendations and then write down what i like, the list is really growing.
I’ve just stumbled on your channel and watched the last BN episode and then seen you have a massive back catalog for me to get through. What a terrific find, this is next level good. Can not wait to pour myself a single malt and work my way through each episode. Thanks for this Bro.
I just got home from work, saw your video and am watching it. I'll be heading up to the listening room after its over to spin some jazz! Who knows maybe Miles, Horace Silver, Hank Mobley, Bill Evans, Brubeck? Love the education my brutha! Keep these amazing videos coming! I can't get enough!!!
@@TheJazzShepherd I have some Brubeck, Ellington, Coltrane and Miles... Recently I got Portraits In Jazz on vinyl by the Bill Evan's Trio. You've given me a path to follow...
Rollins.... same feelings about him too. Between 55 and 59 he was truly the colussus. He owned Coltrane on Tenor Madness. But I always felt Giant Steps broke him and forced his sabbatical. Soloist par excellence, but maybe Rollins never had the conceptual vision of ‘a band’ to go forward Great episode. Keep it up.
New subscriber here and fellow jazz hound. Just picked up 2 Eddie Davis with Shirley Scott represses, Cookbook vol. 1 & 2. Have never been a big fan of organ music, but I’m starting to get into these two. Great video and looking forward to more. For me Monk was the greatest Jazz musician of all time. I’m old enough and lucky enough to have seen him in NYC at Carnegie Hall about 1974 or so. Thanks for posting
The way you talk about Jazz makes you think you're worth talking sports too. I wish I could sit down, spin Jazz, and shoot the breeze. Really enjoyed my introduction to this channel.
Hey Buddy, just found your channel today. Great stuff. I’m early in my Prestige journey and loving it. The wallet not so much but what, am I not gonna buy em? I have not viewed all of your videos to know if you have featured Prestige 7042 Moondog yet or if you own it. Looking forward to listening along. Be well.
New to your channel, subscribed straight away - very cool channel ......some of your Prestige/New Jazz selections are so costly these days...I've focused on picking up UK Esquire issues of many of these which are generally very good pressings (some say better than the poor quality vinyl used in the US pressings) and still can be had for a fraction of the cost....not for long though.
What a coincidence. This morning I was at my local record store and picked up an Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis & Shirley Scott 45 RPM 7". The two tracks are "You Stepped Out Of A Dream" and "I Let A Song Go Out Of My Heart", both from the Jaws LP that you highlighted.
@@TheJazzShepherd Yeah, it was a good morning. I also picked up a Chris Connor album on Atlantic (I Miss You So). I noticed this album because you mentioned her in your Bethlehem series. Some good listening coming up this evening.
Informal Jazz also known as Two Tenors on the prestige label. I have three copies. used to be able to get a Deep Groove Trident pressing with the same metal work for $30 all day long.
Many years ago I bought Two Tenors on Prestige, what I didn't realise is that it is a second pressing of Elmo Hope, Informal Jazz, when I looked at the record it was actually an original 50th St NY of Informal Jazz, Prestige 7043 inside. Informal Jazz record, Two Tenors cover.
Great video man. I really enjoyed it. What about New Jazz though. Some of my favorites are on that Prestige sub label. Its also not well known at all. I think a separate New Jazz video would be really enjoyable. Anyways keep on keeping on.

I love Monk don't get me wrong..I understand that it was groundbreaking and highly influential his style of playing, but I feel that a guy like Horace Parlan, Herbie Nichols and others deserve more recognition for their mark on jazz and Monk gets all the love for making the only credible stamp it seems like I understand like how you feel about Miles with trumpet players. Same thing with piano players, 99 percent of them don't get the credit they deserve and one guy gets all the credit and the cherry on top, they did earn it but that's not to say the other 99 percent didn't earn theirs either and deserve to be remembered as bop innovators to the younger generations.
i do think tho..... that Monk is clearly the innovator not just on his instrument.... he changed jazz...... changed music.... other players are great for sure... but Monk was an AHA moment!!!
@@TheJazzShepherd I agree.. Monk's truly something special.. the same can be said about Miles for the way he can pick up and connect out of nowhere.. even when it won't bring you back..to me that is an awesome achievement even though it is not his greatest work and I'm speaking of Bitches Brew!! Horace Parlan needs more love just like that case on Freddie Hubbard you made and even though I don't play him everyday I totally think should be represented to the mainstream front stronger than he is reflected as of current!!
I'm on the lookout for Informal Jazz. Really tough one to come by. Critics kinda poo poo all of those great blowing sessions and organ bar records too. Which is why I don't listen to critics.

I know I have Kind of Blue, Dig sessions with blue song titles, A blue vinyl 10 inch but man I really hope I was smart enough to buy a copy. I'll just call the police and say my entire collection went missing and it's all at Daniel VanEijl's pad..I'll tell em I have my entire collection sorted out by label and to return it to the Seattle area. ;))
