Love Nat Adderley!❤ great video! Love the jazz, the prose, the poetry of your story. Beautiful. Made me smile. Can’t believe I just found your channel a few weeks ago. Lots of catching up to do!
Wish others on youtube would do something similar. Enough with the LPs you bought last week. Follow the shepherd! I Teach me something new, play me a passage that blows you away and point out who is playing that wild solo.
Thnx very much, i appreciate the kind words... to be honest I find many other vinyl channels are garbage!!! Annoying lacking insight, or perspective!! Like you said.. I bought this last week shit??
Excellent selection, Jazz Shepherd. Riverside had a lot of great covers and some gorgeous colour photography. Love the cover of Bobby Timmons This Here and Rollins’ Freedom Suite. Would love to hear a run down of your personal favourite musicians on each instrument.
@@TheJazzShepherd your give in your show such a lot of experience, Passion and information. And for a jazz rookie like me it's very important to get also an short audio track. It helps a lot.
You have such a great knowledge about Jazz, I can agree to all you say in this video! You really get the music. I still have a foto on my wall from a gig I played with Don Freedman in NY in 1994, Don is a monster player, so underrated, a shame. Thank you for bringing him up, he really deserves it.
Thanks for the extra effort of playing parts of every record, really enjoyable! Didn't knew Bobby timmons's wrote Moanin', will definetly been looking for it. Man, you're a living jazz library, it's amazing and impressive!
i am still learning every day man.... but thnx.... Information becomes Knowledge , knowledge plus time creates wisdom... wisdom plus empathy creates INSIGHT!!!! It is insight and empathy that lights my way to understanding this music... Thats all about what it makes me feel , You know what I am saying???
@@TheJazzShepherd Yep! Insight and empathy combined with your knowledge of the social context and the labels and music industry is what makes your youtube channel so enjoyable to watch!
Thats what matters to me the most.. Love.. Of this art... Of these people... Of all mamkind. There are great efforts at work to prevent broad empathy Even to prevent inconvenient education n understanding.
Man, I absolutely love your content! I'm a jazzhead for quite some time and I feel like I'm always around the same artists and albums all the time. Your channel is a blessing! You have been helping me expand my findings and vinyl collection, thank you! You keep talking about being able to show us dozens of Riverside/Prestige titles we probably never heard of and I'd love a series like that. You could makes videos per label like you've been doing but with less known selections and on top of that choosing a top 10+ with your favourites from that bunch. Hope to see that one day, keep up the great work, my man!
@@TheJazzShepherd I will! Btw, Circle Waltz... oh man, what an album! I'm a huuuge Evans fan and it's like hearing one of his trios with different names and a much better sound than Van Gelder's piano. As soon as I heard those first piano notes I thought "This is definitely not a Van Gelder recording" and I was right. Ray Fowler did that one and the sound is so clear and realistic. Probably my favourite recommendation from the video.
Circle Waltz is one of my fav lps ever.. It is brilliant.... Van Gelder.does not do too much Riverside stuff... From what i have read some early Monk n Evans??? Early 200 series...
Hey dan long time no see. Been off the grid for a bit. Love your riverside rundown showing your dj skills and monologue. Your description of that chet album is visually great. I'll remember that noir scene everytime i play it. Just found a great analogue productions copy of that. It kills me when i see the prices of these riversides. I had them all at one point. Economics forced me to sell them years ago. Riverside is my favorite label even more so than blue note in many instances. Don friedman was an extraordinary pianist and played with many progressive and innovative artists. He used to hang out with scott lafaro, charles lloyd, billy higgins in los angeles in the early sixties. I think george russell was actually african american but very light. Love all his early decca albums: in kansas city, jazz in the space age etc. Ezzthetics is killer as is stratusphunk etc...some other great riversides are the trio with walter norris, blue mitchell's cupbearers with junior cook, sonny red images, clifford jordan starting time, grant green the mode and many more. Thanks again dan for an interesting journey!!
It is a pleasure watching your videos. I’m not a jazz enthusiast, yet. What would you suggest I listen too first to get my feet wet. Btw, our pbs is showing a documentary on Miles Davis on Tuesday at 9 I believe. Thank you.
Hey man, I just picked up Nat Adderley’s “Work Song.” It’s a stunner, no? Why isn’t this part of the jazz cannon. So many great songs and performances. How can you lose with Wes Montgomery and Bobby Timmons!!
@@TheJazzShepherd Morgan rated the tune so much that he reprised it on two later blue notes under different titles but not once did they come close to enhancing the original. Time restrictions on the riverside / jazzland recording maybe prevents it from being recognised as an all-time great tune but i personally think it's my favourite after 'Search for the New Land'
Dan Riverside is where it's at Bobby timmons writing ability outstanding. Bill Evans blew away when I was introduced by a stock broker in Chicago when I work at Sam Goody man I hustled to get his records . Nat Adderley is great. I would liv to find that Blue Mitchell he a killer player be was on a lot of Horace Silver records Dan luv your videos you tell the truth brother.

Watched this video from a year ago last night. Having never been irritated enough to consider responding to a You Tube video comment I was surprised at Dan/Jazz Shepherd's suggestion that George Russell was a "white cat". I believe his mother was African American and he was brought up steeped in the African American church and culture and educated at a HBCU. He was indeed a Black American composer.
yes my mistake.... but in my defense ..take a look at all his lp photos from the 50s... Decca n RCA did everything they could to make him appear white... ( A common thing in that era sadly)
1. Thelonious Monk: that album sounds excellent! 2. Benny Golson: I tend to ignore his albums, but this catches my attention 3. Bill Evans: I own too many but this one is excellent, one of my favorites is his live album at the Mann-Hole 4. Chet Baker: ufff I need this album in my life and with Pepper Adams sounds killer..definitely Jazz Noir 4. Blue Mitchell: I don't own many by him but that one has Nicas Dream if I'm not mistaken..need that one in my collection 5.Bobby Timmons: I only own his live album on Riverside..his albums are hard to find 6. Nat Adderley: very underrrated..just picked up one of his CTI albums 7. George Russell: always been curious of that album
