- I've been to lots of Scotland's best derbies. From the Old Firm contested between Celtic & Rangers to the Edinburgh derby between Hibs & Hearts, which one is my favourite?
Other teams I also mentioned in this video are Dundee United, Aberdeen, St Johnstone, Kelty Hearts, Falkirk, Dunfermline & more...

Edinburgh derby average? Where do I begin.
The atmosphere in Celtic v Rangers match has been nullified since Rangers slashed the celtic ticket allocation many years ago. Celtic followed suit and why wouldn't they? A good Derby needs fans from both sides in the stadium.
Vandalised seats and toilets at both stadiums led to ticket restrictions.

Rangers give you lot a full stand with unrestricted views, you give us a corner where you can’t even see the full pitch.

@@Kwoodbhoy poor wording from my half. We GAVE not give, we were always in the corner during the bigger allocation and it was still restricted views for half of it
The Falkirk v Dunfermline one is spot on. I lived in Falkirk for 17 years until moving to Aberdeen recently, and the hatred not just between the fans, but between the towns, is astonishing. The best atmosphere was a Scottish Cup semi at Hampden a few years ago which Falkirk won, and was the best atmosphere I've ever experienced at a game (other than the 86 Merseyside Derby FA Cup final)
I think there were a lot of the weegie media were surprised by the rivalry at the semi. the fighting outside before the game could be seen from the press box and the press were shocked and then stated it was as bad as they have seen for years including old firm games. Pars fans were told to stay in their seats after it, but charged the gates to get out and were fighting with the police outside who were trying to keep them cordoned in crazy scenes indeed.

Dundee derby should be in god tier easily the biggest derby in which the fans interaction is how it should be friendly rivalry hate eachother during the match and then have a pint together afterwards because after all football is only a game
You got the Ayrshire Derby spot on Sam. That fact that we dont play each other that often makes it a big game. Biggest i have seen was the Scottish cup Semi a few years back and thank God Killie won.......In the Tommy Burns era we were in the same division for a few years and those games were amazing.....Over 10,000 at summerset if i remember right.
It was a Scottish league Cup not Scottish Cup different competitions

Before the allocation debacle the Glasgow derby was something only truly understood if experienced. What a game.
As a united fan, and I can't stress this enough mate, we definitely DEFINITELY hate Dundee more than we hate Aberdeen 😂
Dunno man I feel there’s more of a hatred between Aberdeen and United, possibly because Aberdeen don’t have a major local rival. But based on police presence and trouble at games I’d say new firm there’s more of a rivalry. Obvs just my opinion but I still get more up for Dundee derby than new firm
As a diehard Arab I have to say that I think our rivalry is more passionate v The Fun as we love to beat them and mostly always do...Aberdeen has the potential to have more trouble as this has been going on since the late 70s and all the 80s...

Arbroath v Montrose, especially the new year day one when it used to played, great atmosphere and and sharing the bottle around, happy days.

A Cove Ranger follower here.... Looking forward to when they reach Premiership so they can match with Aberdeen...Even if they don't do well initially it will be a kick for them to finally play.
One derby that reporters have said rivals the Old Firm is the Renfrewshire derby between St.Mirren and Greenock Morton. I’m a Saints fan and back in the day went to a few, one of which was played at Greenock and us Saints fans were chased by Morton fans throwing fireworks at us. Another video you should do is on the antics of Paisley Panda, Saints mascot….. who was the most controversial mascot in scotland, actually being charged by police!!!
Being arrested does not make for a good derby, Rangers and Celtic are both massive teams, and are both massive clubs. St mirren and Greenock Morton are both diddy clubs lets be honest lol
@@CC-nf8sw it's all relative mate , we may be diddies in Scottish football but enjoy our derbies and don't forget Celtic and Rangers are both diddies in Europe and world football who wouldn't get a glance from the elite clubs.

Aberdeen v Dundee United is not a Derby! The grounds are 100 km apart.
It is less of a “derby” than Motherwell v Hibs or Rangers V St Johnstone
A fairly new derby in the Lowland League East Stirling v Bo'ness Utd,there have been 4 meetings, and they play each other at Falkirk on NYE
There have been goals and red cards aplenty in the 4 games so far including red cards fir players already suspended aand not playing
As an East Stirlingshire supporter, over the years, I've been used to the derby rivalries against Falkirk and Stenhousemuir but with the pyramid system being introduced and demotion to the Lowland League, we're now building rivalries with local sides we maybe, kinda liked before. The Bo'ness one has really built up over the last couple of seasons.
The same, possibly applies with the Kelty v Cowdenbeath game..
Cowden fans in the past would most likely support the likes of Kelty, Hill o' Beath etc, when they were in a different grade of football but now that there is the pyramid, they've become rivals.

Old firm derbies used to be electric, not that much now due to the away allocation reduction, still one of the best derbies in the UK without a doubt though, I'd also say Blues v Villa there's a real hatred aswell as West Ham v Millwall
Dunfermline falkirk is god tier
Old firm is up there but you should check out Turkish games n derbies holt crap that's crazy.
Fife Derby raith, and dunfermline East Fife cowdenbeath there pretty crazy at times
Dundee v Dundee Utd more meaningful than either Dundee team v Aberdeen (although a big game also against the Dons).
Dundee or Dundee Utd v St Johnstone would have better atmosphere if the game has more at stake e.g. cup game.
The only team caring about a ‘Tayside derby’ is St Johnstone. Neither of the Dundee teams care about it
Nahhh Aberdeen always come with a huge support and both teams get up for it but st Johnstone only tend to bring a few hundred along the road. Speaking as a United fan I’d defo say going to Tannadice to watch us play aberdeen there’s a proper derby feel about it compared to st Johnstone games

An Old firm derby at night is the peak.
United v Dundee obviously is a bigger ‘derby’ than New Firm but I would definitely say there’s a bigger hatred between the 2 sets of fans when it comes to united and Aberdeen. There’s normally more trouble and arrests and violence (albeit still fairly minimal) compared to the Dundee derby. Utd v Dundee is defo more hate eachother for 90 mins then back to the pubs together.

I've only been to one Celtic v rangers game, when I was 15. It was a drab affair. I believe it ended 6-2.

Yeah against Aberdeen it’s always a good game. Good contest between two teams and two sets of fans.
yes should go to a highland derby between Inverness Caledonian Thistle and Ross County F.C. in the future allways late drama and allways a great atmosphere. from the inverness fans
All credit to you Sam for bringing attention to Scottish Fiba's great atmosphere and rivalries from your relatively short time here. First i must correct your mixing up of Derbies and intense rivalries, A derby has to be in same city or county like Dundee, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Ayrshire, Angus or Renfrewshire. Biggest Derby you missed out was Morton v St Mirren. Aberdeen v Dundee or United is NOT a derby, neither is St Johnstone v the Dundee clubs as only Saintees care about it. Falkirk v Dunfermline is NOT a derby but a fierce rivalry with a toxic edge similar to Aberdeen v Rangers. The Pars (congrats to Jas McPake btw) derby is v Raith Rovers of course, The Scottish Derby history you have missed over the last 40 years of highlights and attendance Sam, is that easily the big 2 (your God category) are Celtic v Rangers and Dundee v United.. They have nearly all been intense, competitive and attacking with constant singing. Sorry Hearts & Hibees but over the years there have been too many boring stalemates or one sided predictability (compared to Old Firm and Dundee derbies) The one and only Old Firm match i attended had an amazing atmosphere but spoiled by the hatred of some as it was the infamous Hampden Cup Final about 40 years ago when the Police Horses had to charge fighting fans on the pitch to separate them. In those days you had to dodge a hail of bottles and cans which were landing on the heads of their own fans 🤦♂🤦♂ -not just O.F fans as i witnessed it in a Dundee Cup derby! Of course i'm biased but i'd say that Dundee derby is top now since Rangers and Celtic removed away fans from the equation ( how sad). Too bad United didn't have the quality to be in the SPL like the Dees but at least they gave half the city and rest of Scotland a good laugh 😅😅 Sam it's time you got yourself in amongst the 'Derry' for an important DFC game -you'd be impressed by atmosphere as i know you had a taste of it at Somerset Park, Can't believe you missed the 8 goal Championship decider at Ochilview, Queens Park 3 Dundee 5 🤦♂

Queens Park vs Clyde?
Stirling Albion v Stenhousemanure on Sat should be elite level. The away team will get booed and i expect people to swear loudly. Id advise adults not to take children as it could go off bigtime. ☠
Partick Thistle and Killie would definitely be on 'wait this is a derby'. It's very one sided (on Partick Thistle) on who considers it a derby. Killie just kind of laugh at the bonnet song 😂 we enjoy the away day though

Derbies are between teams in the same city, town or village. Anything else is a rivalry.
Counties have derbies as well mate derbies are not range specific, but derbies are usually long standing rivalries or every team in London would be a derby against each other.

However, with respect to your view, as an old man of sixty plus years I have to say to you that the original definition of a derby is as I stated in my previous post ie. the teams are from the same city, town or village. I think we should agree to disagree!😊
I'd definitely say Killie v Ayr is a derby with them being the only two senior clubs in the county and only a few miles apart.

Hiya Sam, firstly thanks for getting back to me, I don't know how any 2 clubs can hate each other, fair enough have a rivalry but hatred shouldn't come into football, Carlisle haven't got a derby game, did you know Carlisle were the first team to beat Celtic when Celtic won the European cup in 1967, David Coleman said "there's been a football match tonight Carlisle have beaten Celtic Reserves 2-0 at Brunton Park, someone phoned to BBC and said it wasn't Celtic reserves, its the full team," so David apologised for his blunder, my Dad was at the game, did you get your stolen camera back or did you report it to the police? this is Choppy in Whitehaven, Cumbria, England
Highland Derby - When and if it happens again soon, you'll need to go.
Personally, I think it's better when it's at County's ground. Not a big fan of our stadium for the atmosphere.
So if you do have the opportunity, get yourself to a Ross County vs Inverness derby mate.

The Caledonian Stadium was not impressed at all in terms of atmosphere at all Cally Jags fans did there bit in terms of atmosphere but Country fans only sung when they scored the equaliser & at no other point in the game I was extremely disappointed in terms of atmosphere had travelled especially for the game to Inverness.
4.3 out of 10 for atmosphere.

Old firm used be a lot better before. Hate to admit it as a rangers man but parkhead definitely better atmosphere for the derby no doubt about it.

As far as Celtic and The Rangers are concerned, there is no longer an "old firm". Celtic have been continuous since 1888, Rangers were dissolved in 2010, and The Rangers set up in their place. It is just a local derby.
One derby between Hearts and Hibs at their place. The police visited the Hearts dressing room at half time to request we stop scoring. There already had been 3 pitch invasions. The police didn't have the numbers to stop the fans. The hatred that day could be felt in Aberdeen lol. We are up there with the old squirm in hatred levels.

In the 1920’s the Dundee derby bigger. However since both Aberdeen and Dundee Utd became giant killers they then became a more fierce rivalry but I’d still reckon Aberdeen vs Rangers is a little fiercer.
In the 1920’s ? Really? United didn’t exist until 1925. Even then they were in the bottom league until 1960.
Dundee were in the top league while United were down below.
The real derby, right up until the early 60s was Dundee v Aberdeen, by far the two biggest clubs North of the Tay.

The Glasgow derby would go back to being the best if rangers get a grip and give us our allocation back, as everyone knows they cut Celtic's allocation because we were celebrating to much beating them at their midden.

but Rangers VS Aberdeen
& Celtic VS Hearts are two games you should attend in terms of pure utter hatred towards eatch other in my view.
Also in terms of Fife Derbies
the big ones are
Raith Rovers VS VS
Dunfermline Athletic &
East Fife VS Cowdenbeath
Kelty Hearts are just intruders in the mix but you cant count them as having a strong rivalry currently as they have only really just come in to the league system in recent times & animosity takes time to build up.
So Sam but I am simply not buying
Falkirk VS Dunfermline Athletic as a derbie a rivalry perhaps but not a derbie Falkirk VS Stirling Albion is Falkirk's main derbie over the decades & if they played
Stenhousemuir then that would be a derbie but against
Dunfermline Athletic away & give yourself peace man.
I would suggest there is more rivalry with Saint Johnstone VS Dundee than Saint Johnstone against Dundee United personally.
