- Anaheim Ballet: More Than Dance...
A ballet video featuring ballet dancer, and Dance Theatre of Harlem member, Gabrielle Salvatto doing ballet moves and sharing her ballet thoughts.
Ballet...ballet...ballet...
My eyes are hurting...The comments,the gap,the black bodies,the tattoo?
I can't even replay...
Gabrielle, you are a beautiful dancer. You go for your future, and let the "Zakharova club"talk about perfection.
Unbelievable!
Thank you so for your kind words! The dance world is filled with criticism and you have to have tough skin!
Gabrielle Salvatto
Funny enough, Zakharova was my first and greatest ballerina obsession/inspiration, but love Gabrielle's dancing (ALOT btw) for the same reason I love Svetlana's, the artistry. Incredibly moving, I was actually surprised I liked it so much...
+Gabrielle Salvatto Since Aesha Ash is your role model, you should know that she was a corp de ballet member during her 8 years at NYCB- not a soloist. However, the first and still the only black female soloist in NYCB's history is the legendary Debra Austin! She was hand-picked by Balanchine and danced many principal roles there. And a little known fact: Debra Austin later joined Pennsylvania Ballet as a Principal in the early 1980s, making her the FIRST black principal ballerina in a major U.S. company. All the best to you and keep on dancing!
+sam M Thank you so much for your comment. I think while I was at SAB Aesha started to dance more soloist roles, and perhaps this encouraged her to speak up and eventually leave. She obviously had the talent to be promoted but never was. Thanks for the correction, and yes I'm a huge fan of Debra Austin. My bf actually worked at Carolina Ballet while she was ballet mistress. :)
Yay! Anaheim Ballet is back! I miss these videos! She is an absolutely beautiful dancer!

@ebolaoutkast
That is actually a stereotype used against black girls and women that study ballet for eons and it is absolutely untrue. You simply have to look at video of dancers in the Dance Theatre of Harlem to see that. If you actually look objectively you'll see that "ballet bodies", occur with almost same frequency in every race of human being, including people of African decent.
The "ballet body" for women is rare in ANY race of people and it certainly helps if training begins at 3 or 4yrs. old. And frankly given how everyone's worshipping at the feet of Vagnova and the Mariinsky these days pretty much no one has the "correct", body no matter what race, nationality, or caste you align yourself with.
We'll just have to agree to disagree then. This defies my personal observation (I did a photo Google search of 'Dance Theater of Harlem', and it's nice to see ballet dancers without thigh gaps).
ebolaoutkast
Many don't anyway, the muscle gets rid of any gap, and even skinny, no muscled women might not have gaps, its all about hip structure.
*****. ebolaoutkast
Yeah, given the fact that part of the ideal ballet body are narrow hips it is very difficlut to be thin enough to get those and "thigh gaps". And I looked at many videos featuring DTH ballerinas and lo and behold what do I find...YES the all important thigh gaps on most of the women there. There were exceptions of course.
And oh boy what else did I find? Ballerinas in Paris opera, NYCB, ABT, Royal Ballet, and damned near every other company i could find video/pictures of, and you guessed it, many bereft of those THIGH GAPS! heavens above oh the humanity...
Obviously there are those in this age who cannot or will not see reality. Those of the same ilk who upon the death of Maya Angelou went about the internet proclaiming her a no talent hack who would never have been published if she hadn't played that good ol' "card". Such faaaaasinating people...
Where is the tattoo? Why don't I see it anywhere?
ebolaoutkast
As an artist one of the most fascinating and beautiful things about ballet are the lines and the expression of the incredible range of movement the human body is capable of.
If black bodies were incapable of these I would agree with you, but my own observation shows me quite clearly that being bereft of a "thigh gap", absolutely does not render them incapable. In seeing DTH and Lines ballet I see beauty and dynamic movement. I am sorry that you do not. BTW it is untrue that there aren't AA ballerinas with "ballet friendly" bodies. And as for saying "most blacks" don't have them. I reply that most human beings PERIOD don't have them.
what's the background music???
The tatoo must look gorgeous when dancing Giselle or some other romantic ballet :/
I cover it for every show don't worry!
:)
whats the song in this video??
@ ebolaoutkast
You realize that first of all early training has a great deal to do with the way the body developes. And that it is because of this "blacks have the wrong bodies", that many little girls that have the Mariinsky look (minus the hue) are discouraged from investing time and effort In ballet classes. And I've seen parents forbid their daughters from taking pre professional classes saying that they have no viable future as ballet dancers since few accept black females as ballerinas. And frankly they don't want them hurt by those people. And their are a few serious horror stories about racism in ballet classes and no one wants their child subjected to it. An AA girl who wants to study ballet has to be almost superhuman in their resolve and have very very very thick skin.
Can't say I'd let my kid face those odds unless they seemed superhuman to me (and only if I was quite well off).
She is brazilian?
+ebolaoutkast +cjoyoates, I hardly think one person can speak with authority on the "body type that black people possess". Unless you have personally seen every black person on earth, saying such a thing reduces us (yes I am black), to a monolithic stereotype which is incredibly harmful. As for pointy toes, those come with years of hard work and training, not by virtue of your race. Black people come in all shapes/sizes including the ballet ideal: slender long legs and a slim upper body. For reference Google Precious Adams or simply take a look around you. Examples are everywhere, from high fashion runways to your local mall, to college campuses.
I'm ebolaoutkast and I have to say I was wrong with some of what I said, although it depends on which ballet you're talking about. American ballet is a lot more forgiving, although there certainly is an aesthetic in Russia (considered the 'best') for 'white'-type features.

High fashion runways? Now there's a good place to observe the majority!
It's a nice message, but most black people do not share her 'features'.
What do you mean?
ChanShelly Most black people do not possess her body type and pointy toes. Believing in oneself only goes so far in this particular art form.
ebolaoutkast You are minimizing ballet to a certain body type, the "skinny" type, if you want to call it, it has been since ana pavlova, but before her it was common to see ballerinas more "big". So, black people with this so athletic body and big legs can dance and they are very gracefuly. Is not the body, is what you want to express, how hard you work in technique. Sorry if I write wrong, english is not my mother language.
***** Yes and most of what you're referring to has more to do with aesthetic appeal rather than ACTUAL talent and ability which, is what TRULY makes or breaks a dancer.
That's 110% false.
what's the background music???
