    Rob is the voice of reason in these tumultuous times...thanks Rob for urging investors to stay calm while the stock market experiences wild swings. Reminding us that historical data shows that markets eventually recover so amidst the "chaos", let’s keep a steady hand on the tiller and navigate wisely.

    • @johnc2438
      @johnc2438 Месяц назад +2

      I'm old enough to realize that "these tumultuous times" are all times. I remember 1968 and all the sometimes dreadful events that occurred that year (the year I enlisted in the Navy) August 1971 was when the "dollar was dead" when Nixon took the dollar off the gold standard; while my wife and I were on vacation in London in 1987, the market "crashed" big time -- the world as we knew it was supposed to be ending. And on and on and on... but I still spend dollars and I have remained invested in the markets for decades. Am I a multi-mega-millionaire. No. But my wife and I are retired and living quite comfortably. Yes, the world could end before I complete this comment, but it probably will not. Could I prevent the end of the world? No. So I don't worry about it any longer. Yes, keep that "steady hand on the tiller" and keep navigating wisely!

    This is one of those moments that separates the wealthy from the less fortunate. While some will panic and think, "The market is crashing, I need to stop buying!", others will see it as a prime opportunity to invest more or to continue their strategy of dollar-cost averaging. This fluctuation is completely normal. As I often advise, take a break from watching market movements constantly-it can drive you crazy. Remember, this has happened many times before.

    I understand the points you're making, but I am 73 years old and still have about 40% in the markets as a hedge against future inflation (and that I wasn't a very disciplined saver). It takes anywhere from 2 to 5 years to make the gains that I just saw vanish in 2 sessions! No matter how much patience and long range planning you have, it is certainly very disconcerting - especially if something unforeseen pops up.

      Stocks don't hedge against inflation. They crash. The 10y at over 4.5% was enough hedge against inflation. CPI is at 3% and expected to drop to 2%.

      @@JeanValjean875 Well, I didn't elaborate on the entire story ... I just retired from the Government, and the TSP plan options are not very good. I had just closed that account and invested it all in my brokerage account, and it was my unfortunate luck to see the modest gains made in the TSP account vanish. I expect I will see better returns going forward ... but the fact is I did loose that much in those 3 sessions!

    Mr. Berger, While i partially agree with you, I’m concerned about the intersection of banking challenges, the currency undermined by government debt and spending, and housing bubbles were seeing unwound. I do like a glass more than half full and often find increasing disappointment when the glass is less and less full because of the hidden tax of inflation which itself is being manipulated by government, similar to the deception they try to maintain with the definition of recession. Safe havens are costly (silver n gold) and bankers have told me there is no hiding during a currency collapse.

My greatest gains were made during the Asian financial crisis (1997), 9/11 and Iraq wars (2001-2003), subprime mortgage crisis (2008), and most recently the COVID pandemic (2020-2021). take a pill and chill. Are the major indexes up YTD or down? Are they down for the past 12 months or up? How about the past 2 years, 5 years, 10 years? Compare your individual investments for these timeframes. Many stocks have had a great run up and their prices are no longer inline with their revenue/sales.

    I'm thinking of doing Roth conversions while the market is down. I'd love a video from you if you cover the benefits of doing conversions when the market is down. Is this a good way to think about it or are there any other more important factors. I'd like to make the conversions before the year's end. I think this topic would be of interest to many of your viewers.

      If the funds balances in the IRAs and 401s are still down on the official day that the IRS Forms are generated that determine the value of the IRA or 401 accounts that are subject to the Minimum Required Distributions !!
      think that is IRS Form 5498

    Excellent video and very timely Rob! I'm still 6 years (minimum) out from retiring so I'm barely in that long term investor category. I actually put a small order (2K) to add to my S&P 500 Vanguard fund in my IRA this morning. I actually am a fan of having a bit of dry power and buy the dips. Who knows? Nobody. So if it declines more then I'll buy some more.
    But if I was retired I would do the exact same thing you are, enjoying my life 😃
