    I think an Uber part 3 would be appropriate given everything that has happened in the past couple years. There are more examples of widespread culture problems that came to light (illicit activity/subterfuge, sexual harassment, leadership controversy, etc) in a short amount of time than any major company I can think of.

    I was living in Austin at the time the ride share regulations were happening. A small correction. The City Council put in place an ordinance with the ride share regulations. Then, Uber and/or Lyft spend around $8M on a campaign for Prop1 which was voted down by the citizens at the ballot box. Prop1 was Uber's proposal to water down the regulations that were scheduled to be effective many months later. I recall reading them and reading the ordinance and noticing that Prop1 only slightly modified the ordinance and actually proposed to keep in place the majority of taxes and regulations. So the correction here is that the people of Austin did not vote in the regulation, City Council did. And the people of Austin did vote down Prop1 despite the $8M spent to promote it. So they left as promised and yes, many ride share companies sprung right up after this and from personal experience I will say that they all were garbage compared with Uber and Lyft.
    Thanks for the great content Tom!

    We are having a similar problem with Uber here in Brazil. The taxi union, was providing high cost and low quality service, so people were desperately wanting for companies to come in and compete with them. Unfortunately, the brazilian government, with its socialist tendencies, hasn't yet recognized uber in some states. They're still deciding whether they will make it illegal or not. We even had an extreme case, where the taxi union mafia that had settled in my city, Porto Alegre, hit an uber driver; we also had another case where the uber driver was shot and killed by taxi drivers. I have to leave this place asap haha, can't wait until I get to São Paulo.

    Tom, Uber Part 2 is a great follow on video from Part 1. The three main learning points are excellent and can be applied within our own businesses. I am with the view it’s not a debate whether an Uber driver is an employee. They get to pick their own time to do the job role (contractor). The willingness by Uber to have more discussions and set new rules / regulations can be a good thing for future Uber drivers. Maybe that flexibility to listen and adapt could of been used in the Lost in Austin scenario :) I wonder if any of those Uber rivals in Austin could one day supersede Uber… Bring a new meaning to the Lost in Austin phrase.
    Shambolic re Budapest / Hungary on illegal dispatcher service (3 year ban if caught… what the…). Maybe Fernando Alonso is needed to pass more documents between the two sides so they play nice :)
    Lastly, liking the BMW Petronas (They should of stayed in F1!) top and the Lotus John Player Special top during the breaking news section. How may F1 tops do you own… does your allegiance stem to one particular team.

    • @VALUETAINMENT
      @VALUETAINMENT  7 лет назад +1

      +Mark Ramrattan - as usual I love your Formula 1 references. The comment about Fernando Alonso made me laugh.
      I have many Formula 1 shirts and I had to confess that I am a Ferrari Tifosi and then disappointed they're not doing well because I root for them but also because I like to see competition.
      You make an excellent point about Austin. If one or two capable alternatives pop up - that could be competition for Uber on a selective basis but I do think Uber has a massive lead globally.
      Thanks again for the very insightful comment. - Tom

      +The Grinning Skull - when regulations show up - be cooperative and enter into negotiations. Be clear about why you're doing what you're doing and try to see it from the eyes of the politician or the civic group that seems to be upset. +adtc - thank you for that. We didn't have much of a choice because we finished filming and we're starting to edit and we saw the news story. So,... we asked ourselves "what do we do?" Do we reshoot part of it or should we insert a breaking news bit. We wanted to be sure that it was accurate and we thought this was a clever way to do it. - Tom

      ***** you're most welcome. I like your case study videos. Insert more humor if you can. I think a news-anchor-like setup would have made it even more hilarious. Good timely catch on the news story btw.

    uber is a middleman between drivers and passenger , the business' model is good as Far the software companies dont lease a similar gps software to an organized transportation unions. that would eliminate the middle man for a user fee im pretty sure I would pay $150 monthly happily

    7:02 C'mon man, liberalis didn't say corporation can't do anything right. It is just that corporations are amoral entities and it is the job of the government to protect its people. It's not like corporation haven't done anything wrong. 13:16 You really are politicizing this video when you don't need to. Regulation doesn't equate to socialism.

    You should have talked about Uber in Brazil. At first, taxi drivers did protests and broke the cars of uber drivers, because they thought uber should pay the same amount of taxes as them, also, the taxi drivers ignore the fact that everybody prefers uber here, because it offers a better service, cars, price and much more... It's regulated by the government now.

    Tom I couldn't disagree with you more about the way you pitched uber as a great capitalist company but the EU countries trying to protect their taxi labour force as Socialists. I really like your videos by the way. I would like to ask, who does capitalism usually benefit (a few at the top). I can't help but believe that your sentiment would be different if these "disruptive" companies were not American. Not all disruption benefits society. Put yourself in the shoes of a taxi driver who is having their income disrupted by people doing it as a side hustle. It would be great if you could balance the argument with some of the not so great practices of uber i.e drivers being pushed to finance cars they cannot afford.

    Gonna disagree on the fear mindset about Austin. We MUST drop bad ideas. Hanging on to lame customers is a HUGE problem for entrepreneurs.

  •  6 лет назад

    You do interesting work with those case studies, but I don't agree on this one. Austin would make a precedent, that would be used around the world as levarage to change their business model. They've saved their business, by keeping their identity and not becoming just another taxi corporation. Big part of their identity, especially their early days is beeing a rebel and beeing an oposition to the status quo. It's a big thing You missed in that case study.

    Uber is artificially propped up by venture capital. It’s business model is fundamentally flawed. There chances of becoming profitable are slim. What good is growth if it only leads to greater losses?

    it would be interesting to get your opinion on how uber has handled it's competitors! (such as giving thousands of fake orders to lyft) do you believe this is unacceptable or all is fair in war?

    • @VALUETAINMENT
      @VALUETAINMENT  7 лет назад +4

      +nathan mikesell - there are a number of things that raise eyebrows. I don't think all is fair in love and war, I believe that there should be decorum within competition. A lot of allegations go back-and-forth but who knows with the real truth is. And without knowing the full truth I have a hard time weighing in on it. - Tom

    Defenders of the status quo want benefits of technology without changing their business. Exponential growth sometimes calls for a regulatory response.

    You realise uber is only successful because they operated as taxi's without paying for licences right? Imagine paying several hundred thousand dollars per uber driver. Simply isn't feasable.
