As a parent of a 12 year old, I stopped shopping at toys r us due to the messy stores and prices. Shopping target or Walmart we found what he wanted for cheaper. I am one of the few who still like to go into stores, but only if they are clean and have a good staff.
*TOM YOU ARE SUCH AN ENCYCLOPEDIA OF BUSINESS KNOWLEDGE. PROPS TO YOU*
+The Business Channel - Thank you for that, much appreciated. - Thanks Tom
guys is your screen also flashing Green for the video on the second halft?
Simon Muhr Yea it’s pretty annoying.
+Giovanni Santana Editor knows about it. We screwed up. - Thanks, Tom
Valuetainment all good mistakes happen. Keep up the great content!
Yup I was scared it was my laptop... God knows I don't need this problem now
Sorry - not your laptop. All is well! Thanks, Tom
The humor in these videos are classic!
+Caleb Vaughn-Jones Thank you sir!!! - Thanks, Tom
Must learn to adapt to the times.
+Caroline Ward - Precisely! Toys R Us blew it! - Thanks, Tom
Valuetainment Its only a matter of time before there will be no shops just show case warehouses. .
Soon we won't have to learn at all. AI will be adapting us to the times whether we like it or not.
Hot Dang! I found a RUclips channel that I can sink my teeth into. Thanks for putting this up.
agree. first visit today, and subbed immediately. This content is frkn gold. Just googled Thomas and now understand why.
That Red bull shirt 😍😍
These case studies are always so interesting
+Saaheb Singh Machra - Love the Red Bull F1 team! - Thanks, Tom
Hey funny seeing you here man!! :)
Yard Sale Hunter Continuously learning like you bro 🙏
+Saaheb Singh Machra it’s a Formula 1 team shirt. Sometimes I get them from team members and other times I buy them. Glad you like it. Thanks, Tom
Valuetainment Well it looks good, maybe I'll buy one if i can 😁😁😂
Love Valuetainment. Adding the Biz Doc was a very good move Pat. Keep up the good work guys!!
Plain and simple, great content, 94 years of business experience and business lessons in under 18 minutes. It wouldn't surprise me if a University Professor out there requires it's students to watch Tom's business videos to go along with their curriculum. Thank you Mr. Ellsworth!!!
+Javier Hernandez Hi Javier!! Appreciate that comment. As an adjunct professor to MBA students - I would have made them watch me, ha ha - Thanks, Tom
+Javier Hernandez He is business lessons for dummies, loved it.
One of my all-time favorite Friday Case Studies - very useful information that I can use in my tiny business compared to the behemoth's that like to believe they are too big to fail. Great insight, I love these thought-provoking, action-provoking real life examples of companies that succeed and companies that stumble or fail. THANK YOU Thomas - excellent job!!!!
+Hickory Homes - Hi there, great to see you. Appreciate the comment as usual. Thanks Tom
Retail stores selling products are dying. The only retail stores that provide value are services like salons, tailors/clothiers, restaurants or timed value such as grocers and butchers. People are willing to pay for convenience. New opportunities exist in the shipping industry to deliver faster and cheaper. That will take a giant leap in logistics and/or technology.
Thank you for all your case studies! Keep doing them!
Such a shame to see older companies not adapting with the age of the internet. The new guys at least have a chance to grow. I'm sure Barbie and Ken will find a new home (Argos or Smyths Toys in the UK).
On another note for the UK I praise Argos how it wraps with their online outlet beating many other brick and mortar stores.
+Baldeep Birak - I agree with you - far too many old school companies fail to adapt. - Thanks, Tom
I wish I still live in the UK. Love to see the flagship Argos store. Going the display route wit robust customer service ala Apple store. Next step is offering lifestyle solution like IKEA.
Companies went out of business before the internet.
yea argos has definitely stepped up its game. i only buy from argos via ebay and collect it at argos store. its so much more convenient and i know I'm getting the best price.
The LBO's saddling the company with 5 billion in debt is why they couldn't adapt (ie invest in the human capital needed to create a good e-commerce solution). That said I used the toysrus website a number of times and it was far more functional than the abomination that is Walmart.com. Car in point that it came down to the ability to invest and allow for profit margins that allowed them to compete with Amazon and that is where the failure lies. Amazon was a side effect illness. The real death blow was the LBO and what it brought about...
The chalk work is fantastic! I love these case studies. Keep them coming.
I'm loving these Case Studies. Thank you Valuetainment for a great educational and introspective series.
At this time we all know how the Toys R Us story ends. They should've adapted; they could've used social media Influencers who has millions of followers, they should've launched gaming apps and partnered with developers. Kids are no longer playing with dolls and cars, we live in a hi-tech world filled with AR, VR and AI.
Simply love this channel. It's so informative and insightful. keep up the good work!
Best biz doc in ages!!!
+EveryMan Thank you very much for saying that! - Thanks, Tom
Amazon is so huge that they sometimes uses third party to ship and fulfill the orders.I learned about the partnership Amazon and Toys R Us had. Thanks for living up to the name of Valuetainment. Hope you can figure out the technical difficulty this video had in the later part of the video though at least it still was watchable. Til next case study take care.
+Mitchell Smith Our editor rushed his work and didn't do QA. - Thanks, Tom
Love this guy. Such a great addition to the Valuetainment team👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿
Saul Goodman does financials. I’ve just discovered this guy and I think he’s awesome - time to binge watch the lot
Great video Tom!! These case studies are great bite sized business info and strategy. Awesome and thank you.
It always amazes me how these brick and mortar companies arw afraid of adaptation.. I understand that you want to stick to your original business model that made you successful but at the same time there is always a need for change.
Good idea, Tom. Pls keep doing case studies. We , the startups need it.
Amazon is everywhere! Thanks Tom, what a great study, it’s sad to see big companies make huge financial and strategic mistakes, the world is moving faster than before so you must adapt, and adapt, and adapt. Btw, love that graphics you always make your videos.
+Gabriel Jimenez - Exactly, that's the game here... but so many play it really badly. - Thanks, Tom
I JUST WATCHED THE GOPRO VIDEO AND NOW THIS ONE, IM HOOKED! GREAT VIDEOS! never thought i would be so interested in "business talk" haha
Too soon. But keep up the great work Tom, your videos turn every Friday from a lazy day into a learning day. Thank you for that.
+Bryan Manuel Hernandez Sorry if too soon. But an important story. Thanks, Tom
Would you do an analysis on the current real estate brokerages? KW, Remax, Century 21 etc
I LOVE THE STORE CALL KMART AND TOYS R US
I love the drowning / map / scheme. I' ll use these type of analyse too. It has clarity and it's cool too.
GREAT PRESENTATION ,IT KEEPS YOU FOCUSED AND IT IS NOT BORING.
+LeTechPreneur - Nice to hear that, that is my objective. Thanks - Tom
Thank you Tom! Always look forward to your videos!
+Braulio Damian Calzato appreciate that comment! Thanks - Tom
Thanks for this great summary video!
I have just discovered you, your videos are fantastic! Well done
Seriously, who hasn't Amazon destroyed?
+roscoegino - Hmmm... thinking... I'm not sure. - Thanks, Tom
Walmart
Even WalMart shut some stores. So has Best Buy.
Best Buy
Fast fashion maybe
The leveraged buyout was one cause but it seems everyone doesn't see the first kink in the armor, they started changing what they were. They were toys at first and then went into media like games which dose great sometimes but as things move faster and faster, you end up with unsalable product, also you alienate your original customer and this continues with kids cloths ect., one item after another. Now these new things did great in the short term but killed them in the long run.
Tom Ellsworth, great content! I really enjoy the summary lessons.
Wow, how did I not know about this channel??? You definitely left me better. Binging your videos now
I’ve never had someone tell me they were binging on my videos. Thank you for doing that and I hope I leave you better than I found you. Thanks - Tom
I am loving these videos! Keep it UP!
As much as I loved Toys R'Us, it failed to ADAPT and stay RELEVANT to a changing consumer market.
Same as Blockbuster, Kodak, and IBM.
Please do a case study on Go Pro. Greatly appreaciated!
+Shejey Agyitsang - go pro is a very interesting hardware story, and not many hardware stories have a happy ending. Thanks - Tom
Valuetainment yeah, gopro is becoming a pos. Not much development, a terrible drone and crazy high prices.
I remember when Target came to Canada a few years ago. The website was barely functional and defiantly no online end..couldn't believe they came into the market with no online presence. ...dead in less than a year.😨
love these strategy videos
+David Porter - Appreciate that comment - Thanks, Tom
David Porter uvnanznmNdnekep qjzbduhe♡
Another great video. Thank you guys and girls.
Popped up in my suggestion feed. Great channel!
Bay Area stores (Northern CA) had the WORST customer service I've ever experienced. It got to the point where I dreaded going there. When I did, the stores were messy and gross, the selection was decent but NEVER great, and the prices for video games and consoles was way too high. I knew they were doomed.
I love first-hand information. Thank you for sharing - much easier to trust information that comes from someone like you who saw it with their own eyes and lived it. Appreciate that you took the time to leave a comment. Thanks - Tom
Glad to see this video up Tom, great points here
+7brandonc Appreciate the comment!! - Thanks, Tom
awesome stuff from the biz doc as always.
+bradOLF pittLER - thank you sir - Thanks Tom
Information is the best thank you great job !!!
+Manuel Ibarra Thank you for that! Thanks, Tom
I work for Jb hunt and deliver to toys r us. And we just were alerted that toys r us is closing 180 locations by April 2018
I have some friends that named their tree care service "Trees R Us".
Toys r us threatened to sue them for copyright infringement. They changed their name to "Tree Work Etc". They weren't the only ones, either. There was a day care that called itself "Kids R Us" that, under threat of a similar lawsuit, changed their name.
Maybe if they had spent more time focusing on their actual competition, they would have done better.:)
+Jason Bean - ABSOLUTELY! And now Kids R Us is DEAD! - Thanks, Tom
+Dante The Demon Slayer I agree 100% Thanks, Tom
Hry john, what about you make a "news" show where you discuss companies strategies
Hello Valuetainment. Can you please make the finances series please? I can't wait to see that.
+jonel ahmet - you are correct I need to do that. Thanks - Tom
That moment when you run out of damns, Tom once again great job, love these case studies.
+Freddy Bee I was too stunned for a Damn! Some things are sooo unbelievable. - Thanks, Tom
6:35 LBO (Leveraged Buyout)
16:06 Strategy and Adopting
The point of ToysrUs is that kids get too go play and see the new toys out it's a kids dream just too go and look! Go too toysrus and spend it's important too parents of young children that they stay open! I'm 30 and was a proud Toysrus kid when I was 3-12yrs old!
Amazon Is The New Boss Battle
These case studies are the shit. Great work!
+Hope Patterson YOU and the viewers are the S*** - Thanks, Tom
LOVE your channel!
Just seeing news today of ToysRus beginning liquidation procedures while still looking for a buyer.
the stores open 24 hrs? that only works in christmas. haha yes i'm going to buy a freaking toy at 2 am. I love this videos man.
+Billy GrcTV - Exactly! It was insanity! - Thanks, Tom
Man I like your videos. Easy to understand and to follow. I think next step of this wave will be MALL closing or bankruptcy ... Could you make a case study about future of mall business . I think all the malls will transform to warehouses. What do you think ?
thanks
+Dogan Ulusoy I think you have hit upon a very interesting topic. The big malls are closing and the biggest mall in the world is really the Internet. Thanks, Tom
awesome videos. love it.
I think your'e missing the stock approx value graph inside your graphs. if it won't change, I think your explanations ain't relevent without actual proofs visible.
Love your videos Doc
+oliverv94 Thank you sir, I appreciate that. Thanks - Tom
Please don't stop making these.
+Kweku Nyantakyi see you every Friday!! Thanks. Tom
That was a great story perhaps my fave of all time
+Daniel Devlin I appreciate the comment, thank you very much. Thanks, Tom
I learned a lot from this case study. Although Toy R US did not do enough to adapt, I feel that Blockbuster was worst. At least they tried a ten year deal with Amazon. Unfortunately, Amazon learned from them, and they did not learn from Amazon about the e-commerce space. Abbreviation of the day LBO. The cable companies better learn from this.
+Reggie Menard - Great point my and I agree Blockbuster was far worse. Thanks Tom
Great teacher... though some humility would be nice, or start a company.
Please do a video on VERSACE!!
Great talk doc! Thanks again.
+Sharif Sourour - Appreciate the comment - Thanks, Tom
Such a fun way to learn
love these vids!!
+Abraham Ramos - Love that you watch!!! - - Thanks, Tom
Dude... poor Toysrus... this made me a little sad. I hope they change their ways to adapt and survive before it's too late.
+Fernando Romera - I agree 100% - sad story. Thanks Tom
I was always a PlayWorld man myself, never like ToysRUs
Can you do a video about hasbro and how its going to move forward with toys r us not in bussiness anymore.
Toys R Us was a big deal here in the UK at one point. But it was obvious something was going on under the surface.
How about a case study of Tesco, Woolworths, or Comet?
+Theo Ellis Great suggestions. - Thanks, Tom
Props to Amazon for being a universal store, I laughed back when they only sold books
+Raphael - So you saw it coming! Love that you were thinking ahead! - Thanks, Tom
Love the video please fix your flickering problem it is hard on the eyes
Damn. Don't know how i landed on this vid but I never knew this stuff was so interesting. Subscribed
Great content! Thanks! :)
I doubt any bank will give them a loan for even 100% interest. They're loaded with debt and the strategy of the company is not providing any gains. They didn't change management, so why would anyone expect any change in their situation. They remind me of Barnes and Noble. The only reason I see B&N selling is because people know there's a bookstore somewhere on street X. Eventually a better company will emerge and take their business that they thought would come automatically. Sears led the way, Toys R Us followed, I'm certain many more will follow.
+S Blijheid - The banks are greedy. Let;s wait and see who steps in. - Thanks, Tom
So why did toys R Us choose a LBO? It's still a bit fuzzy to me. (I'm a slow leaner)
I was working as a CS rep for eToys at that time. Would be interesting to know how much etoys.com crippled TRU back 1999-2000.
Interesting and insightful
+Nathan Kwendo - Appreciate it! Thanks Tom
I don't think there are too many successful leveraged buyout stories.
If they were 10 years behind, spending 500m instead of 100m wouldn't have made any difference because sometimes you just need time.
Interesting videos !
I really hope you can do a case study on how e commerce can affect hardware companies. Also leverage is spelt wrong. 😂
+hawkqey87 - The editor blew the spelling as well as the encoding. - Thanks, Tom
Step 1) ToysrUs empowers Amazon.
Step 2) Amazon gets market grip.
Step 3) Amazon gives ToysrUs a middle finger.
u of m digs are excellent.
I had no idea Saul Goodman was such a business guru.
Long story short, its over for brick and mortar stores, mostly
+Sean Jackson yeppppppp - Thanks, Tom
+Sean Jackson So what now? I have to buy an ultra overpriced smartphone every 3 years to buy my food or i'll die? Buy Windows, get's a virus. Get Apple but overpriced garbage. Stores have to remain, it's insane. The two worlds have to share.
missin' the boat. 24hr is the future of brix&mortar, more real jobs, in house temp housing EMPLOYEES. Gas stations become battery stations, everyone wifi'd everywhere, streaming free, ad free, sellin' shit!
Excuse me we prefer to be called Private Equity firms. 😆
+Pesca - appreciate the comment - did I mis state? Let me know and I’ll correct. Thanks Tom
Well done 💯
+Nicholi Peters Appreciate that! - Thanks, Tom
Every retailer who has gone belly up recently has done so because they went private, where a bunch of finance bros took over, extracted every possible bit of value from it, and left it for dead.
Greed is the killer of all things store related
Toys R us had 2 internet stores, so it wasn't the no presence on the internet was the debt after being brought out
Please analyze/discuss the amazing dance that the microprocessor manufacturers have been doing for decades now.
IE AMD & Intel.
DAMN!! Amazon plays dirty
Excellent
+Abu Shama Appreciate it! - Thanks, Tom
