Fascinating and heartbreaking, but at the same time uplifting to hear about people who stayed true to their religion and identity over centuries. How deep their connection to their heritage must have been! I eagerly watch all of your videos and have learned much over the years.

Hi Rabbi! I would love to meet you! I'm from the mountain Jews of Puerto Rico. I've had the opportunity of travelling in Belmonte, Portugal and in Keshene, Ethiopia and I've serendipitously met with Rabbi Birnbaum and a crypto-Jew from Turkey to Thessaloniki descendant of the followers of Shabbetai Tzvi ❤ I wish more was done to let the Jews of Puerto Rico ask questions and encounter mainstream Jews.

Dr. Abramson, My husband grew up Catholic in south Texas, with family history in Nuevo León in Mexico. He has a significant amount of DNA from Spain, ashkenazi, Sephardic, and Northern Africa. He also has a significant amount of “Magyar” and an area in Ethiopia. During the inquisition, did Spanish Jews migrate to Hungary and Ethiopia?

Looks like he's mixed with every type of Jew. Fascinating. I'm suspecting my family were also Crypto Jews who went to Puerto Rico. I've got Spain, Levant, Egypt, & Ashkenazi in my DNA. Distant relatives with Jewish surnames.

There are also Millions of people (especially in S. America) who have Jewish Ancestry but the lineage converted and stopped practicing Judaism generations ago (even in private if they continued doing so) and many times have no idea they were ever Jewish, now being Catholic or another religion. But the family often still carries echoes of Jewish cultural traditions/practices (food choices, child names, etc.), have noted 'Jewish Converso Names' often derived from Jewish surnames and have Semitic DNA when tested. Crypto also means 'covered up' but it was not always 'hidden on purpose'. Sometimes it is just time that covers up knowledge of lineage/history.

I have read the book "The Girl from Lisbon" by Guiora Barak. It is about Donna Gracia, daughter of Dr Miguez, the King of Lisbon's personal physician. They were outward Christians and secret devout Jews. Most of what us written I thus book was taken from Donna Gracia's personal diaries. It is shocking and extremely sad.
I am an ex-Christian who has turned away from that religion and have embraced Judaism. I am now known as a Noahide, and I have repented of being g a Christian, and am truly embarrassed to even say I was a Christian, especially knowing what I now know. After reading the above-mentioned book, I was so angry at the Christian church and so sad for the Jews. 😢

As one Anussim , is soo hard to be scripted into a seraradim community, even to make my “ conversion “ which I feel like a return ( teshuva ) , great job you do by enlightening the Anussim and observants about something just s few knows and do.

I enjoyed watching your video dear Professor Abramson! It would be nice also to see you making a video on Sicilian Jews. For some reason their is no one that talks about the Sicilian Jews History. Up to 1492 more than 10% of the Sicilian Population were Jews. It appears that Jews were living in Sicily even before the rise of the roman empire. Many Sicilian have Jewish ancestry but unfortunately are not aware of it, the spanish inquisition was very harsh in Sicily. Nonetheless a closer look at some Sicilian Characteristics in Food, old traditional healing practices still in secret, and much more shows a clear connection that is alive but somehow lost in time. In the oldest part of Syracuse an entire quarter is still called Giudecca, and many years back an intact Miqweh was found under a church that once was a Synagogue, there are many evidence all around Sicily of the Jewish presence and influence on the island. Its a pity that there is so little material on the internet on youtube and so on. I believe that for many Sicilian rediscovering part of their lost heritage and identity would encourage them get closer to to it again.

Im part Sicilian American. My Mother is full Sicilian and has 3-5% Semitic DNA. Every Sicilian port had a Jewish quarter at one time and Messina was one of the main ports for Indigo Dye in the Mediterranean, which was the main Jewish 'Silk Road' item.
