Eye opening and powerful. I always new in general but to be blunt, I hadn’t ever thought about as you say “imagine, the state acting against you, in a sustained constant way for 200 years, rewarding those who turn in others for being Jewish, real or made up to grab your land, the pressure 24/7 to just give up, like so many others did.” Makes me think more about my own ancestors and what their individual lives were like in their day to day experience. 🙏🙏 Thank you Dr. Abramson🙏🙏 Grateful to hear and see you.
August 1399 in Prague R’ Yom Tov Lipman Milhausen was forced to debate the Meshumad Peter ( Pesach) . The Following year 80 Rabbis were put to death only R’ Yom Tov survived. (R’ Yom Tov together with R’ Avigdor Kara had a big influence on Jan Hus ).R’ Yom Tov wrote a pamphlet called ספר הנצחון , which served as s manual for Rabbis debating Christians. For hundreds of years the church wanted to get their hands on this book. Only in 1644 while debating a Rabbi was this pamphlet grabbed out of the hands of the Rabbi. The church then printed it in Altdorf with their own comments.
(5:49) This basically means that Europeans 🇪🇺 were charging the Jewish communities a hefty poll tax. It would be interesting to know how much money 💰 this amounted to annually for an individual or a family and how much it represented on average as a percentage of their income. (36:58) interestingly the expression "megadef" is מגדף in Hebrew and also مجدف in Arabic with the same letters meaning blasphemer. In fact some Hebrew and Arabic statements are strikingly similar in their word construct: אל תגדף את מתנת האל لا تجدف منة الله Do not blaspheme the gift of God. (50:05) there is an interesting book titled "Anatomy of Torture" by Ron E. Hassner, in which he details some horrific experiences related to the reconquista and their methods. He states: "In their relentless pursuit of underground Jewish communities in Spain and Mexico, the Inquisition tortured in cold blood." (54:21) Goodness, who would risk living in Europe at that time with tortures and public burning 😳
I learned from Ryan Reeves that Black Death was a triple epidemic: first: bubonic; second: pneumatic possibly hemorrhagic fever; third septicemic (most 'merciful' one day to kill)
I feel so blessed to be able to watch these videos
As, usual, I enjoyed the presentation of Jewish history videos. Great job, Abramson.

Do you have a specific video about the context of Martim Luther letter against the jews? I heard was a response to a group of rabbis in Wittenberg?
Excellent presentation, but why cut out the joke at the end? We missed out on the joke here!
