I didn't notice this until just now, but look at the interaction between Rarity and Party Favor at 9:12 - 9:24. He walks over to her and just stares at her. And she is just like...ummm what are you doing? That made me laugh so hard!
As for my thoughts on the episode, I thought it was really good. The "perfect, creepy utopia" plotline has always been a personal favorite of mine, and I think they did it really well here. It's usually very disturbing, but mostly in a good way. The comedy was pretty good: Pinkie having to eat all the muffins was really funny, as well as the part with Fluttershy trying to leave Starlight's house to go to the cutie mark vault. It's also a real nice change of pace to have the Mane 6 NOT be the ones to ultimately save the day. (Technically anyway.) Also, I *love* Pinkie's characterization in this episode. Her going all Metal Gear Solid in the beginning, and her constant looks of suspicion in the first half, are fucking hilarious. And considering Pinkie is all about smiles and making people happy, it's perfectly in character for her to be suspicious of how unsettling-ly cheerful everyone is. And of course, being a huge Fluttershy fan, seeing her get to go all solo in the 2nd half of this episode was really cool. :) The song was... all right, but it did at least have a purpose in terms of the story, so I can't harp on it too much. The moral it taught was a really good one as well. Because, honestly, if friends never had disagreements, their friendships would be incredibly boring. I was also really surprised to see that Scott Sonneborn helped write this episode, though that might explain some of the humor. (Since Trade Ya had some funny moments, and while I hate Somepony to Watch Over Me, the song fakeout in that episode was really funny.) Overall, a great start to the season. I'd say, for now anyway, it's tied with Return of Harmony for my favorite season premiere. I'm liking where this season is going so far. The Mane 6 have basically become the Pony, Friendship equivalent of the Knights of the Round Table, and I find that pretty awesome. I have high hopes for the rest of the episodes here. :)
I love how this two parter breaks the system. All the other two parters have basically a system. (MLPSilverQuill discussed this in his season four finale vid). I really like how the mane six aren't the ones who save the day in the end. Instead they are helped by the town ponies. It was just a refreshing twist on what was becomeing (in gaming terms) a meta.
Not only that. It was also the first time that someone other than Twilight Sparkle played the biggest role amongst the six in saving the day. (amongst premieres and finales)
MLP's anti-Communism, confirmed. Also, the whole Cutie Mark signal thing totally turn them into the Pony Rangers. Like when they just walking down the street doing their everyday routine, the signal come up and call them to base to announce a new villain have appeared. All we need now is a Zordon-type character, like all Rangers' teams does. Dis gon be gud.

This way the show won't jump the shark that fast and keep interesting. Hi LaDix! A fun reaction from you, as always. I look forward to many more through Season Five. I _really enjoyed_ this episode too! And I _love_what they're doing with the __-Cutie Map-__ _Plot Device!_ It's brilliant. _Double-brilliant_ (in my, oh so twisted mind) given that the map seems to only activate based on the Mane Six sitting down in their correct thrones -- so their _backsides_ are what turn it on. Thus, the Plot Device is also a _"Plot" Device!_ I'll give y'all a moment to stop groaning and throwing things at me for that horrible, _horrible_ pun! But seriously -- whatever Harmony-Sense that the Tree had to fuel its own unique awareness and react to threats to Equestrian Harmony seems to have infused the Cutie-Map. I like it! I buy the idea that the Tree of Harmony is continuing to try to direct Twilight, as the Princess of Friendship, guiding her to places where her talents will best serve Equestria. Heck, I don't just _buy_ that idea, I'll gladly subscribe to its newsletter and _re-sell_ it to others! So now, I am guessing -- and let me repeat, this is _only guesswork_ on my part -- when there's a major threat to "friendship" or "Harmony" in Equestria, the Map will manifest and direct the Mane Six -- as the "chosen ones" of the Tree of Harmony -- to these "trouble spots" to deal with ... well ... whatever is there. Given that the way it seems to direct them to such trouble spots is to project an image of their _cutie marks_ (having the minor illusion or holograph first appear where the ponies _are_ then move to where they _need to be_ ) I can't help but see this as the Tree of Harmony literally saying _"Your butts are currently here. Get your butts over there and deal with it!"_ I strongly doubt all (or even most) of the episodes will be Map-Quest episodes ... but I think that we'll likely get several of these sorts of episoded, scattered throughout the season, and pointing towards the big confrontation of the season. Maybe in the finale? Anyway, hopefully there will be "Map Episodes" for Season Five may be sort of like there were Key Episodes from last season. At least, that's what I'm hoping! Also, given that it's the cutie-mark symbols that serve to direct the ponies to Harmony and Friendship trouble-spots, I'm wondering if it will always send all of them together? Will it sometimes only show one or two cutie-marks moving to a new place -- only sending a couple of the Mane Six (or even a single one) whose particular element is needed in a location? And if one of the Mane Six winds up in trouble while out in Equestria, will the map flash warning signals, letting the others know where the overwhelmed one of their friends is located -- allowing them to launch rescue missions? So many good ways the Cutie-Map can be deployed as a storytelling element! It really can move plots along ... in all senses of the word. I love it! In regards to the escape of Starlight, I've blathered on extensively on the subject elsewhere (even though I really am trying to do better about not being so wordy in my replies -- difficult, given that I'm loquacious by nature as well as by name!) but alas, it looks like I'm blathering on more below again! Some prior seasons have had "big conflicts" which can be viewed as revolving around "Harmony and Friendship vrs ..." -- vrs Jealousy, Anger, and Bitterness (Nightmare Moon); vrs Chaos (Discord); vrs Tyranny (Tirek). If the nature of Starlight as an antagonist holds true through the season, the "big conflict" of the season is not Harmony vrs something else -- but Harmony vrs itself. The question won't be "is Harmony stronger than ...?" but rather _"What is the true nature of Harmony?"_ To me, that seems like it could be a really deep and interesting question to explore! For example: it would seem that Starlight had her own view of what "Harmony" was ... or _should_ be -- and she had the drive, will, and magical skills to try to make it so. She wasn't trying to destroy Equestrian Harmony ... she was trying to _redefine_ it -- she supported and fought _for_ Harmony, not against it. Only, she fought for her view of Harmony. A view with which the Tree (rightly!) disagreed -- thus the dispatch of the Mane Six to deal with this Starlight. Sure, Starlight loved playing the role of the dictator over a group of ponies whom she had "made friends" with (in some of the most disturbing senses of the phrase "make friends.") But I can't help feel that, when her power was broken, her subjects freed, and there was no hope of them ever submitting to her again ... 44:00 ... her angry dismissal of Twilight's interference in the village wasn't a "you stole my power!" complaint (it did not strike me as a Scooby-Doo-esque, "I would have gotten away with it too, if it wasn't for you meddling ponies!") ... no, what really angered Starlight was that Twilight had broken the friendships that Starlight had forged. _That_ was what pissed Starlight off. The very idea that people could be friends not because they are entirely uniform and equal -- that differences could make them stronger, is something she is so set against that it results in the angriest outburst Starlight has ... seen at 38:33. Starlight doesn't have the massive power of a mighty supernatural foe -- she's no Nightmare Moon, Discord, or Tirek ... but she is, in some ways, a far worse villain -- she's a villain who might honestly believe that she is the _hero_ ... that what she does is good and just and right. She is providing friendship, unity, and "creating Harmony." And when I listen to Starlight's rant starting at 37:47 and I take the point of view that she's being fully sincere ... that this is what she honestly believes ... I find it _chilling._ She's mad and believes herself sane. How can you "redeem" a foe like that? What do you do with someone like that? Imprison them? Starlight might not be the most powerful villain, but dayum, girl be _scurry!_ What happens if others start honestly believing as she does? Heck, if Twilight Sparkle hadn't made the friends she did, I could almost see how the socially awkward, friendless Twilight could have gone down Starlight's path -- Starlight seems almost like a potential (and thankfully averted) "dark side" of Twilight herself. The more I think about it, the more I can see the Tree of Harmony, via the Cutie Map, going: Right _this_ is the problem that needs to be dealt with _first._ I have to wonder if there are other creatures, like Starlight, out there -- each with their own, personal view of what "Equestrian Harmony" should be. Views which, like Starlight's, put them directly at odds with the view of Harmony and Friendship that the Tree and Twilight seem to share. If so, will such antagonists eventually band together into a group that opposes the Elements of Harmony ... but being a different _kind_ of "Elements" of "Harmony"? Will such antagonists fight among themselves because their views of Harmony are different from one another? Some of both? There's so much juicy story-fodder here! And, as a result, I'm even more hyped for Season Five than I was before. In the meantime, my dear bronies, always remember: y'all are _awesome!_ Stay awesome!

Thinking back on this episode, two lines struck me as particularly telling. Sugar Belle: "I know I'm not a very good baker. At least, I'm not any better than anypony else in this village." Speaker: "You are no better than your friends." LaDix, does the philosophy that Starlight Glimmer was trying to spread sound similar to _Janteloven_ to you?
I can already tell there's going to be a ton of Starlight fanfiction, just like with Trixie. The ending to this episode has a very close resemblance to that of 'Boast Busters' when Trixie ran off. I personally really liked this episode. I can't wait for the rest of Season 3!
I hope that for the season 8 premiere or the season 7 finale, they'll have Bulk at the beginning of the intro popping up from the bottom of the screen screaming "THE HYPE!!!". It'd be fun to throw people off like that.

What I just noticed is that there's a LOT of equal signs acting of symbolism in the background. There are so many of them as if the episode is brainwashing US. Philosophy?? I have an amazing head canon. Starlight Glimmer is a relative of Aria Blaze, the purple siren from Rainbow Rocks. She was TRANSFORMED into a siren by Adagio, willingly. Really, bruh. How did this episode not clicked your thoughts that about it's a reference to real world dictatorships or cults? And for other viewers who feel relatable to the real world situation, this episodes have been actually making a good job at creeping them out, started from the song itself, which is actually a reference from the WW2 propaganda songs, as well as the setting of the entire tones of the episode, with the propaganda vibe and all. Guess you're not smart enough or get out some more Ladix, hehe. Kinda agree with you that it is not as OP as how we thought the season opener might be. This is more towards putting through a psychological level of battle, rather than the physical ones. Nice reaction, btw. Hope to see more for season 6. Peace :)

But honestly its quite intelligent. If they would go on with boom bangs they would try to outdo themselves which would sooner or later result in being too much. And not special at all anymore. They made a good start but definately lower than the S4 finale, not quality wise but with the epicness.
So they went on forward in this roller coaster ride of MLP. Up-Low- Up-Low..The ups . This way the show won't jump the shark that fast and keep interesting. So right now roller coaster wise we rolled down a rather small downhill part of the ride, but still a good one ^^

I _really enjoyed_ this episode too! And I _love_what they're doing with the __-Cutie Map-__ _Plot Device!_ It's brilliant. _Double-brilliant_ (in my, oh so twisted mind) given that the map seems to only activate based on the Mane Six sitting down in their correct thrones -- so their _backsides_ are what turn it on. Thus, the Plot Device is also a _"Plot" Device!_
I'll give y'all a moment to stop groaning and throwing things at me for that horrible, _horrible_ pun!
But seriously -- whatever Harmony-Sense that the Tree had to fuel its own unique awareness and react to threats to Equestrian Harmony seems to have infused the Cutie-Map. I like it! I buy the idea that the Tree of Harmony is continuing to try to direct Twilight, as the Princess of Friendship, guiding her to places where her talents will best serve Equestria. Heck, I don't just _buy_ that idea, I'll gladly subscribe to its newsletter and _re-sell_ it to others! So now, I am guessing -- and let me repeat, this is _only guesswork_ on my part -- when there's a major threat to "friendship" or "Harmony" in Equestria, the Map will manifest and direct the Mane Six -- as the "chosen ones" of the Tree of Harmony -- to these "trouble spots" to deal with ... well ... whatever is there.
Given that the way it seems to direct them to such trouble spots is to project an image of their _cutie marks_ (having the minor illusion or holograph first appear where the ponies _are_ then move to where they _need to be_ ) I can't help but see this as the Tree of Harmony literally saying _"Your butts are currently here. Get your butts over there and deal with it!"_
I strongly doubt all (or even most) of the episodes will be Map-Quest episodes ... but I think that we'll likely get several of these sorts of episoded, scattered throughout the season, and pointing towards the big confrontation of the season. Maybe in the finale? Anyway, hopefully there will be "Map Episodes" for Season Five may be sort of like there were Key Episodes from last season. At least, that's what I'm hoping!
Also, given that it's the cutie-mark symbols that serve to direct the ponies to Harmony and Friendship trouble-spots, I'm wondering if it will always send all of them together? Will it sometimes only show one or two cutie-marks moving to a new place -- only sending a couple of the Mane Six (or even a single one) whose particular element is needed in a location? And if one of the Mane Six winds up in trouble while out in Equestria, will the map flash warning signals, letting the others know where the overwhelmed one of their friends is located -- allowing them to launch rescue missions? So many good ways the Cutie-Map can be deployed as a storytelling element! It really can move plots along ... in all senses of the word. I love it!
In regards to the escape of Starlight, I've blathered on extensively on the subject elsewhere (even though I really am trying to do better about not being so wordy in my replies -- difficult, given that I'm loquacious by nature as well as by name!) but alas, it looks like I'm blathering on more below again!
Some prior seasons have had "big conflicts" which can be viewed as revolving around "Harmony and Friendship vrs ..." -- vrs Jealousy, Anger, and Bitterness (Nightmare Moon); vrs Chaos (Discord); vrs Tyranny (Tirek). If the nature of Starlight as an antagonist holds true through the season, the "big conflict" of the season is not Harmony vrs something else -- but Harmony vrs itself. The question won't be "is Harmony stronger than ...?" but rather _"What is the true nature of Harmony?"_
To me, that seems like it could be a really deep and interesting question to explore!
For example: it would seem that Starlight had her own view of what "Harmony" was ... or _should_ be -- and she had the drive, will, and magical skills to try to make it so. She wasn't trying to destroy Equestrian Harmony ... she was trying to _redefine_ it -- she supported and fought _for_ Harmony, not against it. Only, she fought for her view of Harmony. A view with which the Tree (rightly!) disagreed -- thus the dispatch of the Mane Six to deal with this Starlight.
Sure, Starlight loved playing the role of the dictator over a group of ponies whom she had "made friends" with (in some of the most disturbing senses of the phrase "make friends.") But I can't help feel that, when her power was broken, her subjects freed, and there was no hope of them ever submitting to her again ... 44:00 ... her angry dismissal of Twilight's interference in the village wasn't a "you stole my power!" complaint (it did not strike me as a Scooby-Doo-esque, "I would have gotten away with it too, if it wasn't for you meddling ponies!") ... no, what really angered Starlight was that Twilight had broken the friendships that Starlight had forged. _That_ was what pissed Starlight off. The very idea that people could be friends not because they are entirely uniform and equal -- that differences could make them stronger, is something she is so set against that it results in the angriest outburst Starlight has ... seen at 38:33.
Starlight doesn't have the massive power of a mighty supernatural foe -- she's no Nightmare Moon, Discord, or Tirek ... but she is, in some ways, a far worse villain -- she's a villain who might honestly believe that she is the _hero_ ... that what she does is good and just and right. She is providing friendship, unity, and "creating Harmony." And when I listen to Starlight's rant starting at 37:47 and I take the point of view that she's being fully sincere ... that this is what she honestly believes ... I find it _chilling._ She's mad and believes herself sane. How can you "redeem" a foe like that? What do you do with someone like that? Imprison them?
Starlight might not be the most powerful villain, but dayum, girl be _scurry!_ What happens if others start honestly believing as she does? Heck, if Twilight Sparkle hadn't made the friends she did, I could almost see how the socially awkward, friendless Twilight could have gone down Starlight's path -- Starlight seems almost like a potential (and thankfully averted) "dark side" of Twilight herself. The more I think about it, the more I can see the Tree of Harmony, via the Cutie Map, going: Right _this_ is the problem that needs to be dealt with _first._
I have to wonder if there are other creatures, like Starlight, out there -- each with their own, personal view of what "Equestrian Harmony" should be. Views which, like Starlight's, put them directly at odds with the view of Harmony and Friendship that the Tree and Twilight seem to share. If so, will such antagonists eventually band together into a group that opposes the Elements of Harmony ... but being a different _kind_ of "Elements" of "Harmony"? Will such antagonists fight among themselves because their views of Harmony are different from one another? Some of both? There's so much juicy story-fodder here! And, as a result, I'm even more hyped for Season Five than I was before.

What I just noticed is that there's a LOT of equal signs acting of symbolism in the background. There are so many of them as if the episode is brainwashing US. Philosophy?? I have an amazing head canon. Starlight Glimmer is a relative of Aria Blaze, the purple siren from Rainbow Rocks. She was TRANSFORMED into a siren by Adagio, willingly. Really, bruh. How did this episode not clicked your thoughts that about it's a reference to real world dictatorships or cults? And for other viewers who feel relatable to the real world situation, this episodes have been actually making a good job at creeping them out, started from the song itself, which is actually a reference from the WW2 propaganda songs, as well as the setting of the entire tones of the episode, with the propaganda vibe and all. Guess you're not smart enough or get out some more Ladix, hehe. Kinda agree with you that it is not as OP as how we thought the season opener might be.
