Those two rectangle black things are passive radiators. No magnets, or power. They run on air. Great teardown!
Cool, thanks for watching :)
Thank you for posting this. Looks like you can buy batteries online and they’re a whole lot cheaper than replacing the unit. Was this close to just junking it, now I may try to replace the battery.
Hopefully that is the issue and it resolves the problem.
Thanks, we just cracked one open, using a knife and a hammer to break the seal all 3 sides, then a larger flat head screwdriver with a hammer to further wedge it open and pry it with the flathead. It worked easy and was fast, about 10 minutes. Sweet.
Nice
Battery: 3.6volts 2950mah 11w/h lithium ion type 18650 cell. The 18650 is common to battery packs, 18mm in diameter by 65mm in length.
Speaker:
Those little speaker looking things are passive radiators. They move when the main driver moves. The enclosure is sealed and of a calculated volume. In this case this driver is designed from the ground up by Bose for this application (i read somewhere), it's not an existing part they pulled off the shelf.
Battery upgrade considerations:
First option, staying with 18650 (18mm wide by 65mm long) format and going from 2950 to 3500mah would add one hour playtime, at half volume.
(6 hours playtime at 50% volume with the 2950mah. 2950/6 = 491.6mah/h~ 500mah/h)
Second option:
changing battery type from 18650 to 21700 (21mm wide and 70mm long) will increase the volume of the battery and therefore charge. The 21700 go up to 5000mah. At a discharge of 500mah/h at 50% volume this nets about 10 hours playtime. Both batteries are 3.7 volts.
-Does the bigger cell fit?
-Will the reduced enclosure volume affect the sound?
-Can the same electronics already in place safely manage the charge/discharge of the battery? (i’ll say yes since the voltage remains the same and mah can already be increased without problem)
Disclaimer, i’m not an electronics guy! I’ve just had too much caffeine+ google+ new toy :)
Thank you for this video !!
Hahaha thanks!
good info man, thanks a bunch. Got one of these for a bargain (20 euros) and i'm now in a country where it is super duper expensive to buy a new one. This helps a bunch.
Didn't see a reply here - will the bigger battery fit of 21 x 70mm? I didn't see a reply since your comment on top
Who even mentioned putting a bigger battery?
@@jeremy89632 hello, i haven't tried as I seldom use the speaker. I'd give it a go if I were you but have a dremel and a glue gun handy!
The latch on my rubber strap tore and I wanted to properly remove it. Looks like I'm better off just cutting it. Thank you for the vid!
No problem
these things should be easier to open for repairing or battery replacement. I've had a JBL Charge 3 which the battery got rather fat and died and i had a hard time getting opened up. It just doesn't look the same anymore. I mean I also have a Casio watch and it is so easy to open and replace the battery, and I'm talking about a 200m water resist watch. They could easily do this. It would be great for us and the environment because you'd only have to dispose a battery instead of the entire thing. Not to mention that I, at least in my case, love to repair things and get them to work again.
Yeah, it really does suck :(
Thanks for the video! Mine ended up getting some stinky stuff on it so I needed to get the cover off so I could get it all cleaned off.
Keep in mind if won't be waterproof anymore
Had ours several years. Charge got worse. Ordered replacement from Amazon as specific replacement for Micro. OE battery has separate protection circuit, replacement has circuit "built-in" i.e. wrapped in battery. Red, black, white wires match, soldered yellow to green. PITA? Yes. I have decent prying tools, but time is money and this was maybe break-even, lol. Used 7000 goo instead of silicone to put it back together but not worried about waterproof. Great design tho... If replacement battery didn't work, would have just bought a new one.
Fixed in the end? Sounds awesome!
@@ItsBinhRepaired well, it's playing! Haven't tried charging it yet... as long as it don't burst into flames, we gold, lol!
@@ItsBinhRepaired played fine. fully charged next day. no flames.
@@megamulpha awesome! You got the battery directly from bose?
@@ItsBinhRepaired Nope. Amazon. Cameron Sino 3400mAh / 12.58Wh Battery for Bose 423816, SoundLink Micro PN: Bose 077171 I had to assume wire connections correct and time will tell if battery life is a concern but it's working for now. NOT any easy swap, but doable for those with tools, patience, and some experience ripping stuff open in a way that it can be put back together again.
4:45 that’s a passive radiator it helps boost mid-high bass frequencies however doesn’t usually help deep bass.
Cool
oh that "speaker" with no wires connecting to it is a passive radiator! it just vibrates with the main speaker for a fuller sound
Interesting
Thanks for this, pulled my speaker out of a drawer the otherday, can't get it to charge! Will be taking it apart and trying a new battery soon
Let me know how it goes. It's pretty tough to get apart and put back together.
@@ItsBinhRepaired it was about to go in the bin before I watched this video! Seems I have the same battery in my torch, so nothing to lose :)
@@eel2839 awesome!
If you haven't used it that much it can also be hard to get these things to start charging if they are totally dead please google the problem i had the same problem it wasn't the battery.
In the process of opening it, is the speaker mistreated a lot? Do you recommend me to buy it?
Mistreated? Yeah, it'll be difficult to reassemble.
The 4.2V labelled on the battery is the charging voltage, written in Chinese.
I see
I try charging mine and it just gets a little hot. I’ve tried everything else on it from RUclips. Nothing lights up. You think it’s the battery?
Most likely
Battery is just a 3.6v lithium ion, you just need one that's the same size or smaller (all Li-Ions are 3.6v). It looks like a 16650 size or 18650 size (16/18 is the diameter, 65mm or 55mm is the length). A $5 (new) lithium-ion battery.
And of course to seal it back up.
Mine isn't charging bc of the port!
but good you show how to open it. Mahalo!
Hope you're able to fix it :)
Mine has a damaged speaker, I connected an external speaker in parallel and it could be heard perfectly, the electronics and the battery are fine, but not the speaker.
I can't find the component to buy and do the repair. Do you know of any page that sells the parts for this device?
You'd have to find a broken same model sadly.
@@ItsBinhRepaired thanks
@@HaroldDanielMorenoUrbina yup
This is harder than it looks. Good luck trying to completely seal these up again. Mine never sounded the Same.
Yeah :(
You need to reseal with silicone
@@ItsBinhRepaired well, I did. I had just mangled the case a bit while prying, so no matter how much silicone was used, it would still make a leak sound when I pushed in on the cone. (which is a good leak test.)
@@djijspeakerguy4628 oh :( was it broken originally?
Hey, can you tell me the lifespan of this speaker? Thanks .
Not sure. Mine are still fine several years later. Not sure why my dad's died.
Hi ! It is possible to add a jack port ??? Thanks
Don't think so.
Hi there, very good video, could you provide any link to buy those batteries please, That would be greatly appreciated. Thank You
Can't seem to find one
Una pregunta, el pin de carga se me ha dañado es reparable? O necesito cambiar la tarjeta completa?
Not sure
Ayo so I got one and there might be some dust inside, I was thinking since its waterproof I can just literally run it under some water.
Anything
You'd recommend 😅
As long as you didn't crack it open
Dude, thanks for post this.
Do you know if you the rubber/silicone case is "changeable"? Mine gets cigarette burns and seems horrible but the speaker works good.
If you can find a replacement.
Last video i commented yes it wont turn on. Even if i plug in my charger, the lights wont turn on as expected but no it has no power going. I even tried the charger if it was the problem even i used a new one so it would work but no power still.
sounds like a dead motherboard :(
Can the battery be replaced by 18650 @3.7v?
Not sure
Thank you for posting this. Now I can't assemble it back.
Do everything in reverse. Might have to remove all the silicone adhesive
😂😂😂😂✋
I mean, what else could you do? Lol
The paper wrap around the battery could be here to check for water damage?
The speaker is supposedly waterproof.
@@ItsBinhRepaired indeed, that’s why it could be useful to have an sensor to check that the waterproofing was working as expected
when i pluged into charger my Bose soundlink mini detecting lights, one is on and next one off.what is the reason..? Please reply.
Not the same model. I have no idea.
My bose soundlink micro keeps on restarting whenever I try playing music ,can you help me find out what is the cause of the problem, thank you for the video
Not sure. Try resetting it completely and set it up as new.
@BRICKCITY9MM XD
i don't have a pry tool but would a butter knife work lol
I think it'll work. Keep in mind it won't go back completely to the way it was.
Is the waterproofing seal gone?
Yup, have to put new silicone
Has anyone actually replaced the battery. With what battery was it replaced with?
Something that might be available in a link?
I have bigger fish to fry than searching all day on the internet for a battery.
Not me
I guess I'm dropping another $ hundy on a new one....
:(
heheh... im gonna take out the speaker
Hope it works
Hey dude, just some advice, cut your long nails please.
How will that help me? I use them to fix computers. Sounds like it'll make my job harder.
@@ItsBinhRepaired You have nails like a girl that is why.
@@jakt2440 what does "like a girl" even mean? Why are girls only allowed to have long nails? Who decided that? Do you have problems with guys that let their hair grow out?
@@ItsBinhRepaired Your dirty nails look bad, I am just telling you that. A lot of Asian guys on youtube don't cut their nails, it is bad hygiene, I am just telling you that.
Nails get dirty. They also get cleaned. Can't be bothered to make sure they're clean every time I do a video. I'm not eating computers or using them as plates for my food, so it's fine.
