- This is just a look at trying out soda blasting on a variety of different things. Mostly, I am very pleased with the results. And the success of the final experiment means that the air compressor has actually paid for itself.

The spray gun you are using is meant to be held level while spraying. That's why you have to shake it and the medium falls out sometimes. It will work much better if you hold the gun level. You can get a small booth to collect the spry at Harbor freight. Hello from Memphis, TN, USA

Unfortunately we don't have Harbour Freight in the UK. But I will dig around on the web and see what the setup looks like.
I do sometimes get very jealous when I see what is available in the USA compared with the UK. Our DIY shops are really quite basic. There are quite a lot of outlets that will not sell to 'amateurs' at all. For example, getting piano parts is a nightmare, whereas in the USA you have a number of really good suppliers.

A "bin" style hoover as a cyclone style debris collector attached to your blast cabinet would improve things. As would a proper mask (not one of those paper jobbies)
Yes, I was thinking of trying this. I am making a few modifications to my existing cabinet - making a hole in it. I will report back next month.

Oh. Forgot to mention. A vibrator attached to the powder doodad - especially if you're reusing it - really helps.

It still is the accumulated power put into the air tank in 3 minutes that you release on the work in 30 seconds. That makes 1000 watt x 6 = is a 6000 watt power tool. Would be nice if you handle it a bit less careless. Gloves and glasses and not breathing the stuff would be nice. Water is pretty safe and inert too, but I don't like to breathe it in. Also 130 year old piano dust is not something I want in my lungs...
Very fair points. I will up my game on the PPE front and dig out my safety mask and glasses. I am also thinking that I need to fit some sort of extractor fan when I come up with a box to collect the dust and soda.
To be honest, using it as a soda blaster was a complete afterthought. I had no idea it would be so effective. It took me a bit by surprise, so I wasn't particularly well prepared.

Maybe an ultrasonic cleaner for the strings? And "inharmonisiticy"--that's what makes pianos sound like they came from a cheap bordello saloon?
I used to have access to an ultrasonic cleaner in a lab I worked in many years ago. It was a great device. Yes, it's probably the only way of getting the 'dirt' out from between the coils. I've done some 'research' and almost every piano technician disagrees on the best way of cleaning strings.
Inharmonicity adds 'character' to instruments. You can get tuning devices that measure the inharmonicity across the entire piano and then help you tune your specific piano to sound as good as it can.
The bordello sound is more to do with having some of the tri-cords slightly out of tune with each other. Those are where you have three strings per note on the mid and treble strings. It gives that real Honky Tonk sounds. - most electric pianos have a 'pub' setting which does something similar.

If nothing else helps with the sprayer output, try "playing it" like a tambourine whilst you spray it if you have a way to hold the item in a vice or something like that. Hope it works if you try it.
Play it like a tambourine? You've seen what happens every time I get near a 'proper' musical instrument - disaster. I'll give it a try. I need to set something up that's a bit more manageable once I start on the process. I do want to set up some sort of clamp. I'll give it a go - thanks.
