Very Nearly About Sailing March 2023 - Making something out of wood that isn't a rudder

- This is a slightly odd, one-off, woodwork project. I needed to build something for another bigger project that will feature in a few months. Unfortunately I ran out of both time and epoxy. It will be finished next month. And I will reveal what it is and how it works. If it works, that is...
Yes, I am in my underpants. It's hot in Florida and there is no AC in our boat. We will be migrating North soon once we get a few more projects complete to a cooler climate for the summer.
The backwards tape pantograph trick is absolutely brilliant. I have a set of pointy-tipped jigs that can be inserted into a dowel hole that will "prick" the other piece of wood to locate the mating hole. They fit flush except for the prick that sticks out just enough to make the mark when the other piece is lined up carefully. This minimizing error from the drill wandering since only one hole is drilled after pantographing instead of two. But it only works with dowels so the tape method would be the better down & dirty trick for locating the hinge holes on a second piece of wood. Thanks for the tip. I shall use it someday.
I just can't think of what you are making that would rotate on the radiused legs which also need to fold up (for storage?) If you only need to use it a few times I don't think of why you go to so much trouble to make it foldable like that. Something that you need to stand up from horizontal to vertical very carefully -maybe against a wall or a fence? Build flat & then rotate up? A stack of bricks to be knocked down for a game?
I'm stumped. Since I am watching this late.on April Fool's Day I kept waiting for the prank. I'll keep churning this over in the back of my mind and hopefully I'll wake up in the middle of the night sometime this month with an answer.
Yes, I saw someone do the 'reverse' tape thing a few years ago. I really failed by doing the first part very sloppily. I didn't cut the wood quite straight either. Of course, you need a perfectly fitting joint before you do the tape trick - I didn't do this. But I am very pleased with the way it worked for the hinges. I am sure it is transferrable (pun intended) for lots of other application.
You are very close with your guess. Just the other way round. Vertical to Horizontal. All will be revealed next time.

My dad used to pull fence posts with a truck tire/wheel and a rope. A few half-hitches around the base and set the wheel upright against the post with the rope running over the top of the tire. He hooked the rope to the trailer hitch and drove away pulling the post right out of the ground and over the tire. A radius can be very powerful as a lever motion.
Yep, that is exactly the principle at play here.
Absolutely no clue!
I was hoping it was a folding base for a model railway but then that quadrant thing went on so that blew that theory.
Possibly going to be used as a ‘fulcrum’ to lift something heavy .....engine, car ???
Btw, on the back of this and appreciating the obvious set of woodworking skills that you demonstrated the Repair Shop guys have been on the ‘phone, I believe they may be contacting you soon regarding the next series ....... 😉
All the best,
Richard
You are very close - especially the "fulcrum" part. But not an engine or a car. And not really lifting.
As for the Repair Shop guys - they've been blocking my calls for years.

You got me stumped I just don't know what it is that your making 😢
That's you and me both the, Hopefully I will figure out what it is by next month.

A wall mounted, fold out desk or workbench?
You are not too far out with the workbench thing. It will certainly be used (assuming it works) to make a job a lot easier.

If Lucy is over for Easter, that rabbit will need to bring lots of chocolate.
Oh yes. The Easter Bubby has a well-trained super-team specifically tasked to deliver Lucy's chocolate.

Whatever it starts as it will do for an emergency rudder😹
Actually, if I slopped a load of epoxy on it and wrapped it in fibreglass sheets - it probably would do very well as an emergency rudder.

@@verynearlyaboutsailing8114 a very handsome Transom too
It's a fool's errand, what else could it be ? ;-)
Know what, you could well be right. And if it doesn't work, you are definitely right.

Looks like a stowable table. Can't wait to see what it really is.
Yes, it is stowable, but not for the boat - I already have a lightweight table in the saloon that he manufacturers made - really nicely.
You could call it a sort of table, but with a very specific purpose.

Is it a Wild Goose? I believe that they start to migrate on April 1st....
Hadn't thought of that. I'll cover it in stretched tissue paper, flap the 'wings' and see if it flies. Just to be on the safe side, I'd better run full tilt down the pier and throw myself off the end. France here we come - that'll beat the Ferry queues in Dover.

I'm going to guess it's to help lower or raise the mast if your mast is deck stepped .
No, not that. But a very good guess. And maybe a modified version of this cold do just that.

Polling booth
It certainly looks like one. Maybe I'll carry it down to the polling station in May. Although it is quite heavy.
