  • I found a new in box Lego Mindstorms Robotics Invention Set online. Let's unbox it! This set meant so much to me as a kid, I wanted to share this for anyone who felt the same or want to see the set for the first time. Leave your stories in the comments below

So happy for you to be able to relive that special moment.
A few months ago I picked up a used RIS 2.0 with exploration mars, ultimate accessories + builders set for 100€. I went there by train and talked to the seller who is also an engineer now. Although it was a little bit embarrassing to go by train with those big Lego boxes, I'm so happy I did that. Every morning I smile when I dress up for work when I see the boxes in my closet :)

I once broke down on my way home from Toys R Us and my phone died at the exact same moment. I walked a couple miles to get home... Lego boxes in hand. I must have looked like a crazy person, or been one... 😅

This brought back so many memories! I had an RIS 2.0 set as a child and believe it had a huge impact on my trajectory as a computer engineer. Thank you for uploading!

Same, that's what makes me sad about the discontinuation of the Mindstorms line. I spent most of my childhood drooling over Lego magazines (and the DACTA educational catalogs) wanting all the motors and controllers to build awesome stuff. Getting the RIS 2.0 was an absolute game changer. I fully credit Lego for sparking my interest in computers and electronics and leading me to work as a video service technician later in life

Any idea why RIS 2.0 came with the x400c25 fiber optic piece. It doesn’t appear to have any way of being used in the set. I know you use it between the blue scout and a micro scout in your channel privies but can’t find a way to use it with the rcx.

I feel like there is something in the back of my mind but I can't think why it was included. I know the Mindstorms team had many plans in mind that never really came to fruition. Like VLL and Spybotics integration etc.

I know you said you weren't really a software person, but the USB IR tower runs really well on Ubuntu Linux (even 64 bit!), in fact the drivers are included with the basic operating system! You do need to use some un-official software to program it, but it does work 😁

That's cool! I know enough to get by 😅, I've run Linux for many years but tend to run Windows for compatibility. Currently I have an Unraid server and a game server running Ubuntu. I had to use Linux for PyBricks at one time when there was a bug in the software also. It would be cool to make a video with Linux options for Lego Mindstorms, I just don't think many people would watch it. Anyone running Linux probably knows their way around anyway 😅

Do you know if RCX 2.0 bricks can communicate with 1.0 RCX bricks? You said something about the 2.0 modules having a different IR frequency on their bumper and was wondering if that affects the ability for robots to interact with each other. I'm trying to decide which kit to go with my Mindstorms RCX 1.5. I'm stuck between getting a complete 1.0 set so I can get power jack functionality or a 2.0 so I can get better technic parts. Thanks for your help.

Yes the 2.0 and 1.0 can communicate. The 1.0 units with power jack can often be found on Bricklink for around $10 (at least in the US). I think the builds are more interesting with the 2.0 kit. I still plan on covering all three version of the sets at some point. I've just never found the time to devote to such a project

@@BatteryPoweredBricks One last question, does the 2.0 USB IR Tower communicate with all versions of the RCX brick? I would be using the 2.0 software in conjuction with the 2.0 tower to try and program both my 2.0 and 1.0 robots. If the software and tower recognize them both, then I have my decision.

Yep that should work no problem. I'm assuming you have an older PC or a Virtual Machine to run the software? The USB tower does not currently have 64 bit drivers (although I do believe some are in development from Lego fans)

i dont even know if it works[if mine works]

If it's unopened odds are it will work fine. Although you may need an older PC or virtual machine to use the original software. Most of the RCX units I have that are broken just had the batteries left in them for years
