True story: In my early 20's I worked with a private contractor building houses, and doing renovations. We went to do an estimate for a potential customer.
The job was rebuilding a house from the foundation up. The (previous) owner had literally built the house with his bare hands. Even felling the trees and milling his own lumber. He built this house for his family (wife, 2 kids).
The wife divorced him, took him for everything he had, INCLUDING his house he built. His response was to burn the house to the ground (while his family was NOT there.) He is still serving time for that crime.
I learned from this and have been single ever since.

This is an interesting question. I think Brian is mixing the traditional and modern and did not really put more parameters. If the man pays for first date and want to traditional dating, then sex is off the table. What does the women bring in modern dating? I believe that if the date did not go well, then the man is more than likely to have more investment than women. The women would have more benefits and less "investment" into the date. (the investment is the paying part) In modern times where dating does not lead to marriage (unlike courtship) Loyalty is interesting, I wonder if some of these women will have a "second date" or "later date" while trying to go out with the first date (i.e. dating multiple people at the same time to see which option is good) this is normal for people who have options so I think that is why Brian rolled his eyes on "loyalty" because in the past, many women in the show had other dates lined up after the current one.

The problem with men paying for the first date, a meeting usually between two complete strangers, comes down to women’s expectations. Virtually every first date is paid for by the man because that's what he wants to do, and the woman expects this of him. How rude and disrespectful of her, because the least expectation on any date is to pay for your own food. But let me tell you what would make an enormous difference to the first date jousting game - if the woman was to offer to split the bill, the man will almost always thank her for her generosity and insist on paying the bill. This is a clear show of mutual respect without expectations, and such a small generous gesture would be welcomed. Try it girls.

In regards to first dates, whoever asks, pays... no questions asked. That shouldn't even be an issue. That being said, I also think first dates should be short, simple, casual and inexpensive. Or at least within the person asking's price range. I see no problem with just going out for drinks or coffee because the whole point of a first date is to see if you are compatible, share common interests, enjoy each others company and want to go on future dates. My buddy in college would only take girls on first dates to breakfast. That way he always had an out if the date wasn't going well because he could say he needed to get to class or get to work and it wasn't hurting any feelings. On the flip side, the dates that went well could easily turn into a dinner date that same evening. There shouldn't be so much pressure and expense placed on first dates.

The problem is, women have set this thing up so beautifully in that the dating "game" benefits them in that 99% of the time, they never have to pay for a first date because 99% of the time, they never ASK men for a first date.
So of course that means men have to ASK for the date, PLAN the date, PAY for the date, and men have to do EVERYTHING right if there is to be a second date...which they will most likely ALSO have to pay for. Meanwhile, all women have to do is SHOW UP to the dates. This is just another example of why women don't want true equality...they just want equality when it benefits them and want "traditional" behavior when it benefits them.

My culture still practices some of that. Literally we are taught to be virgins until marriage. If you don’t stay a virgin till marriage, everybody will know and no man will marry you.
