Good inspection Jay. Looks like you have something to work with there. When I Line Hone the Chevys I always bolt a oil pump on the rear cap and torque down. Typically will change the bore .0005 give or take. I to always grind the caps on the side to establish Perpendicular to the face. I noticed one of the front studs wasn't down as far as the other. I am sure that you tap and bottom tap to get maximum thread engagement. Are you going to hone the block with a Torque Plate? Thanks for sharing. I haven't heard anything from you in awhile. Take care, Ed.
I'd love to see how you would hone, bore and deck a production block. What landmarks do you use to position the crankshaft centerline and the bore centerlines etc. Am I correct in assuming that you're trying to minimize the total metal removal consistent with a good result, rather than getting a perfect block by cutting the shit out of it. I'm really interested in understanding the setup steps, although I'd love to see some of the cutting too. I realize this is a big "ask" perhaps you could do a series showing the steps in different blocks rather than takin the time to follow one block from start to finish.
Making videos is tough for me. I have a hard time following up on any of the series I've started and so I am mostly just recording random daily work, skimming through during edit and slappin it on the channel. I do have ideas for some real involved content but for now I'm just gonna keep practicing with these short form vids. They take quite the effort and time and I am so busy in the shop I really dont have the time I already give. A ten minute job turns into an hour real quick and then there is the editing. The 1 to 2 hour jobs take me half a day. Up here tryi g to make sence when I speak, spit out the correct terms or names or even just full audible sentances lol. I figure if I keep at it there will eventually be a video on each step I take. Of course there are some repeat jobs I have posted. Gonna put in some effort and see if I can finish off this lil 454 project. I already have lost my recordings of the connecting rods inspection and refurbashing. Still thinking of how to fit that loss into the mix when the time comes. Luckily I have enough of the next episode to make it worth it for another video. Lookin like it may be 2 more videos actually. But I seem to have a gift for deleting my needed recordings 🤷♂️. I do have some setup vids in the works though. Especially on boring decking blocks as my machine choice is far from the typical way an engine shop does it.
@@whiplashmachine Thanks for the detailed response. I know I ask for a lot but please know that it's because your content is so interesting and informative. You cram a huge amount into your short videos and it's an honor and a pleasure to learn from a craftsman who so obviously knows his shit.

Every block is honed with a torque plate here. I don't even charge extra as I believe it is a BS charge
It is almost there. Just needs some touching up it seems and should be good to go!

Jay could you line-bore the mains on your G & L or is it easier to send it out for honing?
Line honing is quite easier to hit target number and less setup then my HBM would be. I rather just send 'em out 'till I buy my own line hone cabinet
@@whiplashmachine Is the hone for finish like cylinders, or just for diameter and alignment?
👍
