Mo Ghile Mear

  • Sung by 12-year-old Sarah Copus, this song appears on the album "Celtic Fairy Lullaby" available at the official website for the band: www.2002music.com/celtic-fair... . "Mo Ghile Mear" (My Gallant Darling) is an Irish song, written in the Irish language by Seán Clárach Mac Domhnaill in the 18th century. Composed in the convention of Aisling poetry, it is a lament by the Gaelic goddess Éire for Bonnie Prince Charlie, who was then in exile. The song differs from more conventional Aisling poems. Whereas Aisling poetry normally has the poet asleep or otherwise minding his own business when he experiences a dream or vision of a fair maid, in this poem the poet personifies Éire/Ireland, the country itself, as a woman who once was a fair maiden but is now a widow. Her husband, the "Gallant Boy", is not dead but far away. As a consequence the land is failing and nature itself is in decline. This is a theme also used in "Seán Ó Duibhir an Ghleanna" and "Cill Chais". (source: Wikipedia)

Sarah is a natural beauty (no cosmetics), and fabulous singer for a 12 year old. She is what I wanted to be growing up. In school I daydreamed about singing, playing the piano and flute. But I also loved art as well, and art won out. Sarah's singing reminds me of Clannad, Enya, Moya Brennan, some of my favorite singers. Thumbs up and reshared! Much Love - Ambriel

I’d have given anything to have been able to sing to my babies with a voice like yours . Especially songs like this . To have been able to leave my children with magnificent and loving memories in song with a sense of a time and place before here and now to give them a sense of connection.
My family lost everything when forced to leave “ home “ during the famine and again in 1900 .
They did not leave their music or histories and passed it in song /stories. I have never forgotten .
I’m grateful that periodically an artist now and again made music I could use in place of my own inability to express in song a return to the soul .
I’m very grateful to find this .
There is a global shift currently and it’s Hope . It is reflected in the music calling people from all four corners to a place they feel quite familiar with but cannot explain it . I hear it in your music as well as Kazakhstan, Asia, Middle East , Africa, indigenous peoples every where .My husband was Native American. Our children were raised with both Irish and Indigenous music and tradition.
As one listens one can hear the astonishing similarities between cultures and realize it is the sound of the human soul .
All of humanity have this in common.
Symbols and song are universal. The further back we go we discover that out of the wilderness is the sound of the human voice calling to a power greater than themselves . It has been my experience when music changes its an indicator collective consciousness is occurring which then leads to the idea change is upon us which then leads to the very action of change itself . The beauty here insures that it will come from a place the heart , true and pure intent with a power that is unassaulting and most assuring .
I would love to hear you sing vocalise style surrendering to the freedom of what is within you. Im certain it would be as natural as rain .
In a Covid world with such ugliness in our midst you have managed to bring beauty and “ medicine” to a world that needs it more than ever. People from nations one might not consider consciously are reaching out to each other bypassing borders as well as the “ fast food music industry “ with little substance , skill (and little investment for a quick profit ). Unfortunately the effects found us wanting . We are starving from lack of substance.
I cannot imagine what it must feel like to be a vessel of such a wondrous gift and I thank you from the core of my soul .
It is “ medicine “ in two ways . Emotionally and spiritually.
I took my blood pressure before listening and it was up . During and after it dropped a level significantly. It became ideal .
Those who are affected deeply are myriad . Imho it is those who have been “ready” to carry a message of beauty and reconnection to the truth in all life . Ordinary citizens of the world pick up on it out of pure inspiration and deep inner reflection.
It is beautiful to see . Of course I have a sense of pride bc of the origin. Your gift and contribution is more important than you know .
I hope you will continue. It feels so good to go “ home “. A place I have never been and never left .
Thank you . I have hope bc of it my grandchildren will now carry this through their life . When life becomes difficult they can return to this and “remember “.
There are 5 artists currently I use overtly or passively to keep their minds open as well as keep them mindful of what is authentic and universal ( and as a reminder from whom
they descend ) . They won’t become lost because they will know .
I have enjoyed very much what you have done & I have been able to revisit those long gone . A flood of memories returned and for that I bless you .Not that I’m anyone important that youn need be impressed by . I am sure you have worked hard . Your gift is a gift to all . I’m quite overwhelmed at the moment . I’m very proud of you . I wish you well in your endeavors. As you continue to rise in your achievements I think you’ll find at a certain point the days of “ grinding “ to establish thebplace you desire to be , will be the days you will recall the most fondly . I hope you are journaling all of the moments from when you knew what you wanted to do and express and revisit those pages when times become mundane or difficult.
I think you’ll be surprised in revisiting the early days you will be able to “ reboot “. Those moments are precious and priceless.
    ❤️☮️

“One word” is all that is required to summarise Miss Copus’ Rendition:
    “PERFECTION”
I had purchase the Album early last year and, thus far, have “played” this song in excess of 1000 times, of that I am quite certain.
I was initially searching iTunes for other versions of Mo Ghile Mear when I came across 2002.
Subsequent to this, my search has been significantly reduced as this Angelic Young Lady’s Talent is sung in a way that has maintained the Essence and Emotion. Such a Beautiful Song and Lament must be sung in way so that the Story itself is told through the Artist’s Voice; we need to “hear” the Heart itself breaking.
And for such a younger Person to be able to sing with such deep emotional conviction as if she herself were Ériu with a silkened weep and grief-stricken heart lament the loss of her Bonnie Prince Charley.
I beg of Miss Copus to never relinquish such Beautiful and Fulfilling Talent(s): her voice and also her ability to sing as if she has endured a Lifetime of Loss and Heartache.
This video was truly an Absolute Pleasure to watch as well as listen.
P.s Please, I beg, record a “full-length” Version of this song containing all of the lyrics! 🙏

Sarah was very young when she first learned this song. I think that's why her teacher kept it so short. But I too would love to hear her sing the long version now that she is older. :-)

      @SliochdnahEireann 6 лет назад +2

      2002 Band, please forgive me.
You are very kind indeed to offer such explanation. I am indeed being a little too over-enthusiastic.
It’s just that such rare Talent leaves us Fans wanting more and more. Such is the case with many of my most revered Idols in Music and Art; my appetite for the most brilliant of works is somewhat insatiable as it is, as they say, “My preferred ‘drug’ of choice”.
For nothing is more beautiful than Art and Music in its most intricately simplistic form as are these songs sung by Miss Copus.
I believe that she indeed has a very promising career in Singing as her accomplishments progress and I am so thankful that your Genre of Music (where ‘Talent’ is actual ‘Talent’ of a Traditional Nature) has allowed her Skills to flourish with more meaning and substance than those the many Young Ladies of today seem to subscribe to.
I feel that if an Artist can give such justice to their performance without the need to dance around or take part in an overpriced and superfluous film clip, then they are indeed in possession of such Rare and Natural Talent.
Although I am quite young myself, I fear that my Generation has lost the meaning of “what” real talent is: Artist and Songstresses like Miss Copus, whom can both play an instrument AND sing with masterful precision.
P.s. In case you haven’t notice yet, I myself am a Writer and a Lover of all things Poetic in Nature and Description; such is surely reflected within my excessive amounts of writing, sorry.

    • @SliochdnahEireann
      @SliochdnahEireann 6 лет назад +2

2002 Band, I also wanted to add that it was actually this very Song sung by Miss Copus that gave me inspiration to write an entire Chapter of the Novel Series I am currently writing. And from this one rendition, I’ve since developed an entire Subplot with the Character.
The Character’s name in my Novel Series is “Erlá”, (pronounced “Air-la”). “Erlá” is a young Girl escaping the untold horrors of her two ruthless Captors but finds solace in the Celtic Lullabies once sung to her by her Mother whom unfortunately is still a Prisoner. This of course is a “subplot” to the Substantive Plot of the Novel Series. And such a Character was the missing link in that particular part of the Story.

      Hi Travis!
Thank you for your beautiful writing. Such talent does not go unnoticed around here. Sarah and I are both avid readers and love a skillfully crafted phrase. I'm sure your novel will be quite wonderful!
Sarah's teacher that helped her learn most of her Irish, Scottish Gaelic, Italian, Hebrew, and Welsh songs moved far away over a year ago, but we just found out that she is coming for a visit this spring and has happily agreed to teach Sarah the rest of Mo Ghile Mear. :-)

If you haven’t already heard of this Beautiful Irish Songstress, Fionnuala Gill ( ruclips.net/user/fionnualagillmusic ), if you’ve a spare moment, please take a quick peek at her performances or lend an ear to her beautiful voice. Ms Gill has given me so much inspiration through her Music and, also, an outlet for relaxation; there’s nothing more calming for me than playing my Violin along to her songs.
This is Ms Gill’s rendition of Mó Ghile Mear:
      ruclips.net/video/Si_Ybpdhrlo/видео.html
And this is another piece of Ms Gill’s that is just breathtaking and I could honestly see Mrs Copus and/or Miss Copus performing:

Yes. There are many variations of this song. It was created using a traditional air collected in Cúil Aodha, County Cork, and lyrics selected from Irish-language poems by Seán "Clárach" Mac Domhnaill (1691-1754). Something that old will have many interpretations.
