Thank you so much for this! It is wonderful to finally see a production of it. I actually like The Baker's Wife very much and I've listened to every audio I could find of it, to try and imagine what it was like on stage. It's amazing to finally be able to see a good version. You always post the best stuff. Thank you!
Thanks for your kind words. Happy to have provided you with some "Baker's Wife" video.
One of my two favorite musicals about cheating wives and forgiving husbands. The Most Happy is the other. Both beautiful stories with incredible scores.
I love her meadowlark ending like she is actually sad she's hurting him but its her chance for passion too so she's gonna take it
Definitely my favorite Schwartz score. And definitely my favorite channel on RUclips. This video is just amazing.
Thank you, and enjoy!
My school put on a production of this show. It was a blast (except when it wasn't) and we started out by watching this video before anything. The show itself is... interesting, but there's no denying that the themes and score (especially Chanson, Merci Madam, Proud Lady, and, of course, Meadowlark) carry this show. (In case you're wondering, I played Claude!)
How refreshing to see the beautiful Meadowlark in context! Alice does such a lovely job. What special footage to have!
Yes, I've never known the context till now!
How I longed to see this production! I adore Schwartz’s score and remember reading multiple articles/reviews saying this was as close to perfection this show ever got. Alas-timing didn’t work out right and I missed it-what a nice surprise! Thank you as always Spiderwoman!!!
You are so welcome, and I think you will enjoy this.
I saw this production twice and absolutely loved it. Thanks for the lovely reminder!
I’ve been looking for Alice Ripley’s version of Where is the Warmth for so long! Thank u!!!
The show is on in London this summer at the The Menier Chocolate Factory - with a truly perfect cast ❤: Lucie Jones, Clive Rowe, Josefina Gabrielle …
His best score, although the stuff for the villagers never interests me as much as the material for the leads. Thanks so much for this!
I saw this production and enjoyed it immensely.
What a great/rare post! I know the show through the original cast album and have always wanted to see a professional production of it! But as far as I know it's rarely done! Thank you!
You're welcome, hope you enjoy.
Thank you so much for this. I have played Aimable Castagnet twice and absolutely love the score (Chanson and If I Have to Live Alone are so beautiful). Really looking forward to watching it 👍🏻
Watching this last week, for the first time in more than a decade, made me realize again how strong this score is. Hope you enjoy!
Oh my goodness! I have no idea Alice Ridley did this part! Thank you SOOOOO much for this.. I love this score.
It really is an A-level score. And I think you will enjoy Alice in "Meadowlark" and "Where Is the Warmth?"
What a magnificent score this musical has.
Dearest Gay, I've just found this and what Wonderful Memories has it brought back to me ! I don't know where you are now but I send you my love, as always along with the hope that you are well and Happy ! MerciBien Laurent Giroux
One of my all time favorites, and I gotta say my favorite Schwartz piece. Such a lovely show. It really never fails to warm my heart, Alice does such an amazing job and whoever plays that Aimable is simply adorable!!
Glad you enjoyed. The Aimable is Lenny Wolpe, who has played the role in several productions of the show. He's a veteran of many shows on Broadway and around the country, and played opposite Betty Buckley in "Gypsy" at Paper Mill Playhouse.
Thank you for this... wow, such memories. If I may, I'm going to add this so this doesn't get taken down (Meadowlark repeatedly got taken down by RUclips)

Good God- this is amazing. I've worked with Lenny-he's fantastic-stellar cast!
I love The Baker's Wife
I love the score to The Bakers Wife, so much great stuff in there, and i've seen a few production including the London production, but like Chess or Mack and Mabel, the book has never really worked for me. Despite the title, its really an ensemble piece. The title character is off stage for almost all of Act 2. Unfortunately Endless Delights was cut after the London production, which at least let us continue with her story. And as for poor Pom Pom the cat getting all the blame.... I've seen a few clips of this Paper Mill production before ( Whats with Alice Ripley's terrible accent and why don't all the characters have a French accent??) but its fantastic to see this with all the numbers represented. It really is a treat. And 1 hour long!! Thank you so much for sharing.
Schwartz has said Endless Delights makes her way too unlikeable and will never return--which I think is a mistake on his part (similarly over the years he has softened Dominique's lyrics over the years to make him less cartoony, but I don't think they work as well).
I do think the stuff for the villagers is far less interesting (and not as good) and Trevor Nunn's later statement that it should be a one act TV musical makes a lot of sense. But those main songs--wow.
@@erichg5949 Yes most of the villagers songs are filler. I think Endless Delights shows she is having fun with Dominique, and Where Is The Warmth is the come down from that, it at least gives an arc to her story.
@@DDTC73 EXACTLY. Schwartz has a tendency to fall into that trap some writers have of endlessly tinkering and revising elements of their work that really don't need it--or, in the case of Endless Delights, overthinking and undermining their initial good instincts (besides which the show really could ue a song like that at that point...)
@@DDTC73 Spot on.
Great score; but no one is ever gonna buy she goes back!
.....i miss Serenade.........the whole score and the gem of a story, work so well together. But Damn Serenade......
Thanks for uploading, i had this one for years in my collection and always wondered why Ms. Ripley put on this dreadful fake accent when she speaks.
I have a degree in and speak fluent French and have lived in France for multiple years also, I have worked several years as a French VO artist including park announcements a Walt Disney World in French.. I actually saw this production live. Your "assessment" of "dreadful" is irrelevant unless you speak fluent French better, then shut your pie holes! Prove me wrong
@@garylife5320 Probably you’ve got me completely wrong. But maybe I didn’t make myself clear enough and “dreadful” was exaggerated. I find Ms Ripley’s decision as an actress to put on a French accent irritating, strange and annoying, since everybody else doesn’t. . Anyway, my capability of speaking French fluently has absolutely nothing to do with that, nor has your knowledge or experience. Have a nice rest of your life.
I'm curious if there's a full production of this available anywhere
Gay Marshall was one of my very favorite Diana Morales' in A Chorus Line...I love her voice , dancing and acting 💙💜💚
I was just reading up on her and she seems to have had quite an interesting career. She was an excellent choice for this production and makes every "Chanson" count.
Is there a complete video of the whole show? Say yes please!
I have a question: are songs in the right order (in the same order, as they sung in the show)?
Yes, this video represents the order of songs, at least for this production.

Oooof hate to point it out but Meadowlark was jarringly flat on those big open vowel belts.
Until the vibrato comes in at the end and covers it up a bit 😬
Every single time (every. single. time.) "Meadowlark" is posted, there's that one person who says this (who's never sung "Meadowlark" and never will) and it's the only negative comment. And why is it always a young male?? It's HILARIOUS by now and so derivative. She's got a Tony and led N2N to a Pulitzer Prize. Grow up.
He's probably too young to even know what a Pulitzer is. Kids these days, sheesh. Your mom must be so proud. LOL.
Go ahead, honey, put up your video of you singing this. We'll wait. LOL.
The gorgeous score is unfortunately saddled with a dull, boring book about three very unsympathetic people--a cuckold, his cheating wife and her egocentric lover--the villagers/neighbors are far more interesting and charming.
