How the french fit a 90mm into such a tiny armored car I will never undrstand. The Stryker MGS looks like it'll flip over when it fires and that thing is only a 105!
No such thing as "only a 105", 105s are no joke. With that said, the 90mm in the Eland is _much_ lower velocity(and thus lower energy) than the 105 on the Stryker, it also fires substantially lower energy ammunition. If nothing else, you can see it in the sheer difference of the proportions of the guns.
This 90 is low pressure, the 105 on the mgs are the cannons that they replaced on the Abrams. Way too powerful for the chassis, instead of putting an appropriate cannon they took the ones in storage
@@tiaanmalan1459 They saw limited action in Angola but the Ratel 90 was a game changer. I served in 2SSB, us tall guys knew what a Noddy car was all about. One of our troopers got his shoulder whacked by the breech while firing, tall guys for you.
For the moment they are being replaced with a combination of the BAE RG-32M Light Tactical Vehicle and the Mowag Piranha IIIH. I think at one point there were plans to have a more direct replacement, but I think that was put on the back burner for the moment.
Yeah that would not be far off. This number was split between two variants 90mm and a 60mm mortar which was later converted to 20mm gun. However near the end of their lives many of them I don't think were serviceable due to lack of parts and such.
@@seantbr2019 It's still way too big. Armored manufacturer clearly abandoned this concept of light vehicle with big punch. They all switched to bigger vehicle.
They're not even reliably bulletproof from all angles, hell it's not even really .50 proof on it's frontal ark. It would stand absolutely zero change against anti-armor munitions, IEDs and modern organizational capabilities. The countries that still use them do so because they have no other choice. The AML 90 and Eland only really found their use in small-scale, low-intensity brush wars in Africa. The Eland was built and designed to be cheap and easy to take out to the colonies and provide fire support for counter-insurgency operations. I question it's utility when compared with an MRAP mounting a TOW.

I got a run in one in my service days. Would not like to have been dealing with a group of them back in their day if their crews knew what they were doing. Fast and very manoeuvrable little buggers (relatively speaking) that punched above their weight. Ideal scout vehicles, and easily transported and deployed. AML 90's have taken out T55's in Africa and the middle east on quite a few occasions. I believe they are vulnerable to RPGs, mines and IED's and any heavy weapons though. Very little crew protection. Engine not the most reliable either and tricky to learn to drive well apparently. Every armoured vehicle is a compromise is some regard.
@@susanburke1854 massive mistake getting rid of these. They had an amazing track record of taking out armoured vehicles on leave keeping missions.. these are far superior to the FV101 scorpion tank in terms of fire power
ah I see cheers. Any ideas if those that are being decommissioned now are going to be replaced at all? Doubt the Dept. of Defence has much cash in the coffers to splash out on some new armoured vehicles.
To me it's a delightful little vehicle, but what is it used for? It still strikes me as a tad too small to be combat effective or safe against IEDs, etc.
Nicholas is more or less on the ball. The 90mm AT gun could deal it's fair share of damage to most vehicles from soft skin to armour. At least one in Lebanon in the 1980s stood up to a Super Sherman, and another scrapped a half-track at the Battle of At Tiri. Since being stood down in 2013 they've been replaced in most recce and armoured roles by either new LTAVs or MOWAG Piranha variants.
Huge mistake to retire these.. amazing track record at taking out armoured vehicles on peace keeping missions, amazing fire power for such a small vehicle.. far better than the current FV101 scorpion.. mowags that replaced them are ok, but the 30MM auto cannon isn't great, should have put the 90MM turret from these on the mowag at least, it could take it. The 30mm auto cannon will not take out armoured vehicles. we were doing well when we first got the comet tanks, after that we just went downhill, we retired our jets, replaced by PC9 and 12s, downgrade to be honest especially speed, 3 times slower than our old havilland vampire jets. The targets being fired at are small natural landmarks, these are used due to the dangers of accessing the target area.

is the AML 90 still used on peace keeping missions?
No. The Irish units on UN missions upgraded to Mowags for Kosovo onwards. Needed to meet NATO specs.
