My mom’s dementia has out her in a risk for hurting herself. She’s in assisted living but now recommended she goes to nursing home. There’s a memory care unit however in the assisted living where she is and we all love this place. However the extra cost is $8,000. per month out of pocket and Medicaid doesn’t cover it. I’m looking for help and if there’s a way to find a way to cover this.

Most states have Memory Care facilities that can be paid for completely by Medicaid. But the resident needs to first be approved for Medicaid.

Question we just put my mom into a facility called Suite Living Assisted & Memory Care. My mom feels out of place she does not have cognitive-issues but has physical issues with a diagnosis of congestive heart failure, lupus and scleroderma. she is 74 yes old. In fact her infusion therapy nurse says we jumped the gun. Do you have any suggestions on other living . She had a history of falls with 2 in the last year resulting in hospitalization. Thank you

I am sorry for the late reply. I would imagine you could find another place where she would be accepted in "General Assisted Living" instead of the "Memory Care Section". Would it be possible for us to schedule a call? You can email me at: josephc@assistedlivinglocators.com

If someone needs to be in a locked unit why are they not in skilled nursing facility? When someone has severe dementia it's very hard to communicate with them I can't see them doing activities and crafts. My experience with these type of lockdown units it's just a bunch of residents walking around aimlessly or confined into a wheelchair watching TV all day because that's all they can do. I wish people would just be honest about this. Seriously why can't people just be honest and say your loved one is so demented their quality of life has declined so much all they can do is sit in a chair and stare and talk gibberish but since you have the money we'll keep them here even though they should be in a skilled nursing facility on hospice.

Thank you for sharing. But I have seen some places provide much better care (supervision, activities, interaction) so that they are not just left sitting in a wheelchair. I am happy to say that some places do a much better job than that.

I've made U-turns in skilled nursing/memory care facilities (one continuous in and out) whenever I've smelled urine or feces. Any facility that has these odors should be cited by their state's administrative authority. It's unacceptable.

Thank you for your comment. It is a tough business. I know the staff at most buildings do their best.

I get punch on the face by a resident at the Memory care and Management doesn't really do anything about the staff getting hurt..
