I love the transtar 2-1 primer.. It covers and fills in scratches so well and leaves such a nice smooth working surface with usually only light sanding needed..
@@TheInfamousProject i mean I'd love to but can't agree. Ford at least used a hardener in their primer I'm sure. I've been professionally painting for 3 years now and bodywork for 8+ but ive been into old rusty cars forever. I've done everh repair you can think of from good to bad and can assure you're better off investing in a compressor, gun and cheap primer set up or buy 2k aerosol primer like eastwood which is just as easy to use and much more durable. As a professional painter the only time I use aerosol primer is as etch primer before urethane or big bare metal cut throughs before sealer.
Here in the SW High altitude desert sun has backed mine hard and brittle. Whole sections have chipped away. Already have replacements that sadly aren't logo'd but at least won't detract. Great technique. If I can find a salvageable set I'll have to give it a try.
For sure! I have the non branded pair on my 90GT and I can already see a few spots cracking. The aftermarket stuff is just never as good! Try it out for sure
I used roll on Berliner from Wal-Mart had to wet sand between coats and it turned out good but I had a hatchback cactus to mount them on as I worked them
Hello Good day. Excellet video. One question, what do you think about using another Flexyble putty brand to do the job? like for example U.S. Chemical & Plastics PRO-Glaze Polyester Putty 30 Oz Pumptainer? Please if you can, let me know your input on this. Thanks.
I have brand new mouldings from lmr but the rest of my trim is gloss black. For the life of me i cant get any kind of paint or primer to adhere. Any suggestions?
I haven’t restored these in years, looking to do it again on a different fox. So I was wondering is that red tube the polyester glazing putty to ? Or is it a different product in the smaller tube? I figured I probably would never use that whole can. Thanks mane !
The previous owner of my 1987 Fox Body Coupe had the quarter glass painted the same color as the vehicle! They are cracking now and I was wondering how hard it would be to take the paint off and do the procedures that you have shown in the video?
Amazing video! I’m restoring my fox, but the previous owner painted over all of the moldings. What grit sand paper do you recommend to remove the paint off the quarter windows without further damaging the molding?
Nice video!! I am getting ready to re spray all my trims. In your experience is the mar-Hyde brand a better option than the SEM trim black? Or is mar-Hyde best used for quarter moldings? Thanks.
i did the lmr cover thing...never again...2 sets later i finnaly got em to stick on....looks ok i guess had to put a screw on the lower back tip to finally get it to stay..
Never did anything like this but my car definitely needs it done can you tell me where I could find the products that you used so I could attempt this process Thank you Great job also
While this is a very solid plan there are also quite a few issues with your procedure. I'm a body man, so I'm not speaking just to speak. First off, I'd never apply any product to raw rubber without hitting it with an adhesion promoter. There's rattle can versions that do just fine. Second I wouldn't use a urethane primer. It's porous and will allow moisture to get down to the rubber. I'd use an epoxy primer instead. It will seal off your polyester coat and lock out everything. The urethane primer also tends to shrink up quite a bit, especially being black on top. It will get hot and shrink. The 3 coats of primer on something like this is unnecessary. Use any sort of guide coat and finish it off with 320. 1 tac coat and 1 good coat on top is more than enough. Finally, never use brake cleaner before applying paint. Use alcohol instead, only use alcohol.
We all have our own ways! I have done many sets with no issues to date (years and weather extremes etc). Theoretical vs Practical I guess. If one of them fails I'd for sure re-consider the process.
Hey man, couple questions for ya if you could answer them. I found the eastwood 2k aerospray and wondered if that would be a good epoxy primer for these. Also, should I use regular 91% or denatured alcohol? I'm doing a restoration for my dad and want to do it right so it lasts.
Depends on your definition of minimal lol. If 2 coats of of the primer fill the hole and is not visible after sanding then yes. If you are putting on more coats to try and FILL the voids, then no.
Cracked generally means someone else tried to fix them and the repair is failing.... Unless you can sand off whatever is on there I wouldn't recommend it
Ive done a few recently. I did use adhesion promoter before using putty, and before using 2k primer. I sprayed with SEM trim black in my HVLP spray gun, as the ones i did for my own car 12 years ago were done from an areosol can and there was minor texturing. Sprayin from a gun has the best results that ive found. Ive also started to wetsand the primer aswell. Results can be seen on my instagram if interested @d_notchback

That is Amazing. Thanks for the video. Ditto on what Wayne Selma said.
Looks good! Thanks for the info on the putty. Mine have about 24 years in the Texas sun and really need to be restored.
Very well presented. I did this same method on my 92 5.0 and they turned out great. 👍
Thank you for this video, I'm restoring my coupes quarter glass using this method.👍🐺
Thank you for taking the time and making this and listing the products used. I plan on doing this to my 93 teal Cobra quarter windows.

Upol makes a flexible filler designed for bumper covers that might work well too. Nice job.

Polyester gazing conpon dose it come in smaller tubes in with the smaller tubes do u have to use harder?? Cool video
Yes hardener is used with this mix. I believe I saw some smaller tubes. If not with the Evercoat it was with ProForm

What did you add to the glazing putty in the smaller tube?
Awesome.. can you do this while they’re on the car?. Is the putty going to drip ?.
Mine are wore down a lot on the top and are sinking into the body line. Would you recommend using this method to build up or are they too far gone?
Yes you can build them up it will just take a bit more work! You can send me a picture and happy to have a look.
@@TheInfamousProject I could do that. How would you like to do that? Email?
I will just make a video and post it later today and see what you think
I posted a short little clip on my channel of the quarter window trim.
Can you post the product names/ brands of the putty, primer, and paint?

Awesome! I want to ask, do you have an extra set of quarter windows for a 92 notch that I can buy from you? Thanks
Do you need to do any prep to the trim before using the putty? Other than a good wash I assume
I scuff it down in the needed areas

It can be done... You'll have have to sand off all of that old paint and make sure there are no stress cracks left!
@@TheInfamousProject thanks! I'm like you, I hate that painted look on there!
Thanks Chris! Some good advice on this kind of repair! What’s your thought on leaving the windows on the car to do this repair?
You could! Just be sure to protect the paint! Maybe wedge some playing cards behind the molding and mask everything accordingly
if i could post a picture i would, my 1/4 glass rubbers are bad and torn etc. what would you suggest the best approach to repairing would be.
Find a better set to start with
