I would say it is more like the Strike. Its atmospheric backpack is basically an improved aile striker pack (with full atmospheric flight), and has swappable backpacks based on the striker packs, as opposed to the fatum-00 of Justice. Obviously the combine-able beam sabers are a bit freedom/justice-esque, though. They also both eat positron cannons while defending the Archangel, lol.
At least it did show its full potential in the Freedom movie, like uh.... FUCKING SURVIVE REQUIEM'S BEAM! Like the only damage it received from that is glowing hot metal, but nothing else!
Based on its reflecting armour and its protective barrier armament system, And its designed specifically against long range projectile especially beam shot than against close range melee combat like sword type weapon, It is indeed a mobile suit/weapon designed to 'protect' than attacking/destroying so far it done great job protecting Orb especially in the movie. That reflecting armour is OP.
Yup akatsuki is design to be the shield orb needed and when the country was threatened by requiem it shielded it but i think with two more shot it would be either destroy or badly damage if we judge of the fact that akatsuki armor is smoking.

I feel like Akatsuki isnt just a sister unit of The Strike but also likely a Distant relative from The Dreadnought/X Astray since they somewhat managed to acquired the data from andrew waltfeld during the Astray manga which also include First Gen Dragoon system.
Other than the fact that the scene in 3:00 is the exact scene used in the opening of episodes 35+, it's unfortunate that we never got to see Akatsuki reflecting multiple beams and redirecting them back to its multiple enemies. It would've been great to see it do that technique but with a different animation and circumstances. I don't think it's even used in Seed Freedom at all.
Gundam akatsuki is good in battle if the oppressor's weapon is using beam vannons or plasma blasters. But what i reckon is, that gundam is not good when fighting with physical bullets e.g. gundam heavy arms or all the suits in gundam wing .

It won't be necessary as it's already good for what it is, also I think the reason it wasn't nuclear powered is because it removes the idea of it being orbs shield

Destiny is definitely worse than Seed but I loved the scene when it blocked that huge beam was from destroying the Archangel.
