What is the advantage of being a smaller weaker nation dependent on other people? The only reason the USA keeps pushing for the Ukraine’s “independence” is because they can keep selling them weapons keeping the Ukraine indebted to them making them their puppet as a result. How’s that any different than being part of Russia? You’re still relying on the resources of other nations and their influence to prop yourselves up. The Ukraine literally just traded one master for another while calling it “independence” like they have any clue what that means. It’s just brainwashing.

Absolutely true. Even back in the USSR, The Baltics were seen as "somewhat exotic", and people travelling in the Baltic SSR's described as "feeling like being in Europe". For Lithuania, this was greatly to do with the fact that the general secretary of the Lithuanian Communist Party, Antanas Sniečkus, while having been a devoted communist and having comitted atrocities against the people, was a great nationalist and did all he could to stop the Russian migration to the Lithuanian SSR and tried to make Lithuania as less reliant from the Russian SFSR as possible. This is now also why Lithuania is the only Baltic country that doesn't have the "Russian minority" problem. The percentage of Russians in Lithuania is just too small so most of them simply integrate.
It's a mistake to consider ALL of the former soviet republics as NEW formed independant states after collapse of the soviet empire. Three Baltic republics WERE independent states between the two world wars and REGAINED independence. So Ukraine also had a very short period of independence 1918. - 1920.
not only these periods, before that Ukraine was called differently, but from the beginning of Rus' these lands were called Ukraine, more precisely then it sounded "oukraina / vkraine", and so it was either just with a different name, like the Zaporozhian Sich, the Hetmanate, or Galicia -Volyn principality, or in associations, like the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. The Cossacks often had a connection with Russia, but this is only for one reason - by the way, the metropolitan of the Orthodox Church, Russia stole the metropolitan from Ukraine, and so, despite the attitude towards other countries because of religion, like Catholic Poland or the Turks, Ukraine suffered the most from Russian actions. any oath to her was always compulsory, and the autonomy promised by Russia was always violated.
Fun fact: No, Ukraine wasn't independent in the time frame you presented. They specifically stated that Ukraine is a part of the Russian Republic. Hello! You are absolutely right, it was the inevitable and best decision a post-soviet country could make and we are reaping the results of this excellent decision right now.
That's because Baltic nations always were in their hearts and minds European. Even despite long years of different occupations by various forms of russia, we still considered ourselves Europeans. That's why during soviet times all other soviet countries citizens considered Baltic states as WEST. Because we actually were, even under occupation. And gaining our freedom back was seen as tiny window of opportunity to rush back to Europe's family. And now we're witnessing complete success of this decision. Bitter comments from kremlin trolls say it all. But the fact is obvious: average citizen of Baltic nations lives way better than average russian, or any other ex-soviet citizen.

@@deefloor590 In the Baltic countries in the period before world war 2, military dictatorships were established, in fact a one-party system. Forced labor was introduced in Latvia. After 1940, when France and Britain lost to Nazi Germany on the continent,USSR realized that it would fight Germany alone. Therefore, it was necessary to establish a communist system in the Baltic States, to place army and military bases there, as the current "fathers of democracy" like to do. It is not necessary to say that the Baltic States quickly recovered from the consequences of the WWII, thanks to the tons of Soviet resources imported there.
@griizinjkalns The Baltic States consumed 2 times more resources than they produced. Oil products, natural gas, coal, ferrous and non-ferrous metals, wood, lumber, cotton, wool, as well as some types of machinery (tractors, combines, automobiles) and equipment were imported from the USSR to the Baltic economic region. Food and feed grains were also imported.
@griizinjkalns Because USSR is an international state. Regarding "your history books", if you mean those printed in Russian Federation, you should not believe them. And if they are Soviet, then i, unfortunately, did not happen to be born in USSR.
While arbitrary stats like gdp, quality of life don't obviously show the full picture it was damn well a good decision. Estonia during the early days of re-independence had turbulent times. As one example we literally had "mafia wars" with assassinations, bombings. Basically what it was was our oligarhs, rich businessmen of the old state vs the new government trying to grab power back from those guys. We can consider that a success. We have videos of our president riding to big factories and literally telling the bosses who liked the old days to "lower that soviet flag" as they were still trying to resist the change. Me personally, having more or less born as we got re-independent have seen the change happen. Less people are going to work to Finland as our economy is slowly building up and with the travel the difference isn't that good for every job pay wise. We have our own foreign workforce mostly from Ukraine now. Last month I made neto around 1800€. So I am seeing a change, and a change in mentality. My own work sector, a couple of years ago buying good equipment became cheaper vs the cost of workers. Meaning, as it should be, its now cheaper to buy top equipment vs keeping 2 people on the same job as workforce costs are bigger in the long run. So there is actual practical differences I am seeing year to year. We have problems, due to being a small nation certain good costs a lot and perhaps we have a somewhat housing/rent bubble in the captial due to everyone urbanizing but overall strides are being made. Whats more important I feel like I have a goal to work torward and the overall systems of our state are in place to move forward. Stability and small steady growth is good, well we have to now live through another probable rescession but that is more or less a global thing. Then again I like what my country is doing, and I like most of my neighboring countries, Latvia, Finland, Lithuania, Sweden and the rest of EU.

@@toliklisiy5868 Haha. And?
They were just another conflict party in the civil war that primarily sided with the White Movement instead of Bolsheviks, before having the eastern parts integrate them into the Ukrainian SSR.
Nice try though.
@@QiuSe they do not consider themselves part of Russia, neither then nor now, the alliance with the whites was only because their goal was to at least remain in power, and the communists tried to revive the empire, Ukraine sent its delegations around the world, for example, it was then that the world learned about "Shchedryk Shchedryk", but they gave the name "Carol of the bells", and asked for help for themselves, not for the whites, but no one helped. If you think that some country belongs to some other, because it used to be part of it, especially as part of an empire, then you are mentally ret*rded). If you don’t consider yourself as such, and if you are not Russian, then you now have 2 options, either admit you are wrong, or run to kiss one of them in the a*s: the British, French, Italians, Greeks, Portuguese, Spaniards. Because with a 90% chance your land once "belonged" to them). Well, if you are one of them, buy a ticket to one of your former colonies and make speeches that this is your original land, let's see what they will do with you) Ukraine has never been part of Russia voluntarily. This can be seen everywhere, in songs, in poetry, for example, the most famous Ukrainian poet called Russian Musc*vites, the same thing happened in history, constant wars against the Poles and Turks, and against Moscow. However, due to a clear numerical loss, they were often forced to take an oath, and religious Cossacks preferred co-religionists.

However, a peace treaty is not a purchase agreement. The peace treaty is a document that ends the state of war and usually prescribes some transactions of resources such as war reparations. Purchase agreements, on the other hand, are contracted OUTSIDE OF WAR. For instance, when Russia sold Alaska to the US in 1867 it is regarded as a purchase agreement, because there was no armed conflict between the sides.
Your provided sources repeat the same old leitmotif of Russia purchasing the Baltics without actually referring to any of the proof. Wait, they do refer to Nystad Peace Treaty. Which, as I explained earlier, is not a purchase agreement, but a document that ends the state of war. Why the Russian language texts make this stretch calling Nystad treaty a purchase is never and nowhere explained. Well it can't, as usual the Russian language texts are pulling off a ridiculous spin of what really happened.
The Baltic's really didn't want to be annexed by USSR or Russia ever again. Good for them, they are doing quite well and are part of both NATO and EU.

Credit to the Baltics for immediately distancing themselves from the USSR's decaying carcass, because it clearly worked out to their benefit. If that ain't one of the best darn decisions anyone's ever made then I don't know what is.
Hello! You are absolutely right, it was the inevitable and best decision a post-soviet country could make and we are reaping the results of this excellent decision right now.
We, Georgians tried to but were forced to join the CIS after the Georgian-Abkhaz war
@@VintOffke This is not surprising. Have the citizens of Russia lived well at least once in 1000 years? For once? And they won't. NEVER! Only if they are divided into 30 more countries, then maybe some parts will heal well, and others will starve to death.

It is awesome when the countries have their own writing system. Georgias one is very beautiful

Baltic states were considered a better place to live, and economically more advanced, even in Soviet times (peace times I mean, not 1940 or the years immidiatly after the war). My mother was born and grew up in Lithuania immidiatly after the war in a town with heavy red army presence (Siauliai) and recall that officers stationed there were sad when they, and their families, had to move to new location's. Also recall that Riga (in Latvia but close to her home town) was the most 'European' city in the USSR, or seen that way at the time, with a day travel there seen as a presious gift. Shopping and dinning experiences not seen elswhere and a Cosmopolitan feeling. When we visited Lithiania some 10 years ago she was surprised to see how much the Soviet 'relics' were missing... Sure there are the typical apartment blocks in the cities but much of the rest was 'cleaned' of the typical deserted or obsolete structures and factories. Latvia, actually, still had some aspect of Soviet looks... Starting with a bunch of old Soviet migs and helicopters standing abandoned in Rigas international airport just near the terminal...
