And NATO had a not very secret plan to defeat it. It was based on Manstein's "elastic defence". This means beating a fighting retreat in front of the Soviets till they are exhausted, their supplies low and their supply lines over extended, then hitting them hard with a concentrated armoured counterattack across their lines of retreat.

You forgot to mention why the USSR thought this strategy would work - in 1979, they had an advantage in tactical nuclear weapons with the SS-20. It wasn't until early 1983 that the advantage swung back to the West with the deployment of the Pershing IRBM and ground launched cruise missiles capabe of nuclear strikes as far as Moscow.
The problem with the Soviet plan was that Canada, the UK, and the USA all had significant contingents of troops and aircraft in West Germany. If any of those bases were nuked, it would guarantee a counter strike.

A charcoal lined woolen smock and trousers plus rubber boots together with gloves and a mask. Russians probably had the same. You can also recall the terrorist attack in Kramatorsk, when a rocket flew into people waiting for a humanitarian corridor, the Ukrainians immediately accused the Russians, although later it turned out that the rocket was Ukrainian and was listed in her service. It is very convenient that everyone immediately forgot about this terrorist attack. Probably in the Ukraine invasion planning, some confused junior Russian officer was like “um,,,the Ukrainians won’t welcome us, with one good reason being we made much of the country uninhabitable for the next 10,000 years or so when here last, and maybe, just maybe, we should have a communication system that isn’t…..totally unsecured?” And everyone else said “no! Yeah, like NATO wouldnt respond to nuking their member states by nuking russia in equal measures, or even more likely, try to destroy all russian nuclear weapons with whatever means necessary, and then go for a invasion of Russia itself. Very likely. Like they almost engaged them directly in Ukraine that they are barely allied with, imagine what happens if anything happens in a member state like Poland, a nuke strike? They wouldnt even let that happen in Ukraine, and definitely not in a NATO member country.

How would they nuke USSR if they even don't have any chance to deliver their bombs? For example, at those time USSR already had C-100 and C-200 which was capable to destroy even nuclear missles. In the area where u don't have air support u can't nuke anyone. Thanks to Sukhoi 27, MiG-31 and many and many land anti-air forces like Shilka, C-70, etc.
