There’s a band you should check out. They’re called One Ok Rock and they are best Live. If you do react to them I’d suggest “We Are from their 2018 ambitions tour or The Beginning from their Eye of the storm tour” Hoping to see if you listen to them
If you want to see a fantastic mallet percussionist, find some Zappa and the Mothers videos with Ruth Underwood. She was a classically trained percussionist. Inca Roads is a good example (you were talking about damping the keys - you can see her doing this at the beginning of Inca Roads) According to one of the videos I've watched, yes, they are interleaving the notes during the rapid passages. To me, that's more impressive - that kind of coordination between two sets of hands that aren't connected to the same brain just blows my mind. I know what you mean by using water to make a shimmering sound - I took a music class in college for non-music majors, and in that class somebody did this by taking a metal pan lid, turning it upside down, putting a bit of water in it and sloshing the water around as he struck the rim of the lid - it made a pretty cool sound. However, some yt videos indicate that the shimmery sound in gamelan comes from tuning two groups of gamelan instruments a fraction of a half step from each other.
That's all very interesting! We actually have watched Zappa with Ruth Underwood before, but I don't think we watched Inca Roads. We'll definitely take a listen. Thanks!
You were right. The suling (wind flute) was dominant in sundanese style of gamelan.
Balinese gamelan was more rapid tempo than Javanese or Sundanese gamelan.
Yay!
