I play the elusive style a lot myself but you have to learn to be measured with your approach. Walking backwards alone just won’t work but if you can mix in counters, takedowns and other aspects then you can truly make it work. It’s all about the balance!
You also just have to pressure sometimes. Like I use backwards footwork to make the other guy miss instead of head movement sometimes, but I come back in when the openings are there. It's about maintaining a certain range, not just backing up.
To be honest, I haven’t found these types to be much of a problem. I tend to use fighters with a lot of different kicks, so I’ll just pick at em from the outside and when I’ve done enough to win the round just take em down and hold em there. Got a cool concept. Not sure if you've seen this before but its sort of a random style select. So you go into a fight, choosing random fighter. Counter punching cant be done backing up. By the time u step back plant throw the guards already there. Only works if they are over comitting combos. Counter punching is throwing the right punches at the right time. A well timed straight counters a hook. A well timed knee counters poor takedowns.
