  • I hear many new drivers getting their CDL with a restriction on their license. Hey, they say, doesn't much matter because most new trucks are automatics. But I say, you never know when an opportunity will come along where you need to have to be able to drive a manual transmission truck! Always good to be 'more qualified' than 'less'!

Absolutely, also if you are thinking about getting class B, just go for class A so in case you decide to change your career goals, you don't have to go and pay for the whole training again. The difference in price is not so much to be cheap.

I had the restriction on my license the first year because where I went they only tested you out in automatic trucks and being a rookie at the time I didn't know any better. Later on down the road I got the manual and all of my endorsements, tanker, double, trips, hazmat, and TWIC. The amount of opportunities for driving positions increased dramatically, and so did my pay. The big carriers (puppy mills) dont want you to know it though.

Made a career change from hvac to cdl ( do to serve arthritis in hips and knees)
At the school they started me off on a manual and the next day my knee was the size of a soft ball and could not move for a day. Did get license with the restriction then about 8 months both hips and knees locked up, had left hip replaced in March and left knee done 2 weeks ago. Will need right hip replaced but not right knee. Looking forward to getting back on the road.

The company that sponsored my training sent me to a school that started all their students on manuals. Even though I had trouble with it at first, I insisted on learning on a manual even though the sponsoring company had an almost entirely automatic fleet. I mainly insisted on it because of this very reason, not wanting the automatic restriction on my CDL. Hilariously, I had never driven a manual of any kind when I first started trucking school, so I like to tell people that I learned how to drive stick on an eighteen wheeler.

I was never satisfied, Now in '22, My future husband and i bought a '01 pete 10 speed and i am now getting the experience i always wanted. This wise logic works for all motor vehicles. If you learn manual the world's your oyster. Many jobs besides trucking require operating manual vehicles. One of my first jobs right out of highschool was working for the local school district and every vehicle I drove was manual. The most interesting and fun was the three on the tree full size Chevy van. The kicker to all this was the fact that I learned how to drive by using my parents automatic 78 Buick Electra limited so the job for the district was an unpleasant crash course in manual operations. This gentleman is telling it straight.
Thanks for the awesome, useful, prudent advice 👍.

When I went to school everybody including the owners and the instructors and even most of the students who just passed told me to get the automatic because it was easier and faster so I thought I only had 4 weeks to train and I was only able to go on the road 5 times for about 20 mins per time! So I told myself I can get the automatic faster and then if need be I can go back and get the restriction took off. Everyone said there will be no manuals in the next couple years. Well we had issues at our school with the state testers getting fired and I had to wait an extra 3 weeks to test. Had I have known that I would have went manual and had the extra time to train on a manual. But also the guy who was taking everyone out driving hated training manual because nobody was picking it up and everybody was failing manual there first time . I was told that if I failed my first time that I would have to pay for the test again and it would take another month or so so I didn't want to take that chance. The school said they was goin to cut out manual training eventually because all the problems they was having. I was told all I would have to do is pay another 1200 to be trained on a manual if I wanted to come back and needed to. I do wish now that I would have tooken manual but I really don't need it at this time. I am working for Sysco and all there trucks are automatic and they never cared that I had a restriction. The only reason I want a manual now is because I think the coolest meanest trucks out there are manual but they suck to drive in the city for local jobs so im not that upset about not having manual. I was told our school was the best in the state and if they said it doesn't really matter which one you have then I was just goin with it. I did past my test first time and everybody who was testing manual was failing and still way behind. So I think it doesn't really matter if you are goin local.

You become much better driver with a manual. You understand weight and torque much better. Auto drivers are generally just steerers not drivers!

I wish I had that option, my employers paid extra to prevent the school from teaching us manual -dispite prior less than legal experience- specifically to prevent attrition
