  • A lot of people ask me if you can wash brain tanned buckskin clothing, and the answer is: Dear lord, yes! And please do!
    While some leathers are damaged by getting wet and dry, your buckskins will hold up a lot better if you take the layer of grunge down regularly. I don't recommend just throwing them in the machine though. Here are my recommendations for washing your buckskin clothing, and why.

      very cool, though fair warning that a lot of things called "buckskin" are actually chrome tanned, not true brain tanned buckskin, so before you wash it using the method I talk about here be sure it is brain tanned. I would hate for washing it to ruin you ur grandmother's beautiful jacket if it is chrome tanned "buckskin"

    I'm thinking about purchasing a western style buckskin longcoat. It's got fringe, conchos and hand painted metis designs on it.
    How would you go about caring for it and how durable do you think it would be in weather?
    If you'd like I can send pictures or a link to the website in an email.

    I try not to clean mine until it really needs it. But when I do I'm useualy out camping and then I hand wash in the river no soap, and use a smokey fire to dry it and as it's drying i stretch it a bit. A little miscoloration or staining after several years use should be expected. It gives your skins character .lol

      I would be concerned about the heat and the wear on the buckskin, I think it would shorten the garments life span, but it all depends on your priorities right? It certainly sounds more convenient than the way i do it, but requires electricity and heats up your house, etc, etc. The price we pay sometimes for "convenience" can be pretty inconvenient, depending on how you look at it

    Hello Ma'am, I have a ton of buckskin lying around and am looking at making a wool Anorak. If I were to layer these, would you recommend the buckskin underneath and the wool on top? Or the other way around?

    • @BuckskinRevolution
      @BuckskinRevolution  3 года назад +3

      definitely buckskin on top of wool- the wool provides the insulation and the buckskin breaks the wind and keeps that warmth in

    After soaking or washing your buckskin, could you wear them while they dry so they mold perfectly to your figure? When working with other types of leather, it feel like wetting it gives it a bit of "memory" when it dries. Love the videos!

    Using detergent would be bad because it will cut the grease and fats in the hide, what about tallow and lye soap? Would that actually help keep it conditioned?

    • @BuckskinRevolution
      @BuckskinRevolution  3 года назад +2

      The soaps i use, when i use soap are fat and lye based, but they don't really condition the hide as the fats nature is changed through the saponification process

    • @BuckskinRevolution
      @BuckskinRevolution  3 года назад +2

      that makes more sense! Yes,, some people do it, but you shouldn't need to. In 25 years of wearing buckskin i have never had a hide get stiff over time or need to be resmoked. if that happens I believe it is only because it wasn't properly smoked on the first place. If resmoking is desired for coloration, it is much better to dye the buckskin with a natural , tannin based dye like black walnut, than to resmoke

      people use it for other types of leather, but mostly the use are poor chrome tanned imitations of real brain tanned buckskin. In its truest sense yes, it refers to brain tanned deerskins, but you can't trust that that is what you are seeing when something is labeled "buckskin"
