Buckskins were prevalent in traditional European dress as well. Especially for pants. It was a very durable material and one pair of pants was usually worn for life. In northern Sweden a "yellow legged" (gol-bena) person is a young man, since young adults had new buckskin pants.

The Native Americans in the old west apparently only used buckskin in winter because in summer, buckskin shirts were warm so it wasn’t comfortable that’s why they adopted cotton from the Pueblo tribes. But those in the plain were expert in buckskin, they literally invented suede and the leather clothing they made used to be cold in summer
Made lots of buckskin the old brain tan and smoke way over the years, wore it in some pretty tough conditions. All you need is a dead deer and sharp knife and three days and you got leather. It’s cold in the winter and hot in the summer. In rain it turns to snot. I do think there was a reason Indians bought cloth, and from the rendezvous times on premade cloth clothing and bolts of cloth were sent West. Give me wool and linen any day of the week.
The thing that most impressed me about my indian made buckskin shirt was it was hot in the summer. It made up for that fault by being cold in the winter. All in all leather alone makes a very sorry material for clothing. This explains why cotton and wool clothing and blankets were such valuable trade items with the native Americans who had suffered for generations using animal skins. I will give leather one plus, it blocks wind very well and when used as an outer garment helps the cloth fabric underneath to hold in heat.
I'm here to tell ya, the whole fringe wicks away water is a myth. The fringe will dry out first and the rest of the garment is still soaked. First hand experience.
