Great video, Ben. Loved the info from Shane, very interesting and amazing how the body adapts!
It’s amazing what a bit of analysis can reveal. I am starting my physio/recovery sessions as I’ve been having issues with my hip/groin. He filmed me running and straight away pointed out that my right elbow is pointing out and higher than my left. My left foot is pointing outwards as well. He said this was the body’s way of achieving balance/compensating for weak core. My legs/hips are taking all of the load and marathon training has found me out.
I have a biomechanics analysis session today then my physio will design a core strengthening programme for me including Pilates. I will also have to concentrate on good form which is something I am willing to do but it might be difficult to lose 16 years of (poor) technique,!!!!
It’s definitely worth getting a review of form as it highlights stuff you would never realise !
What a scenery out there!!!amazing!!so good to see you running-keep up the positive spirit.Your mind will always hold the body back. That's it's job -restart it every day with the proper orders/thoughts.Wish you the best!
This video couldn’t have come at a better time for me. Had a minor stroke 2 almost 3 weeks ago and have had shocking runs since I went back out last week. Tears, tantrums the lot. Feel embarrassed to have lost so much fitness in such a short space of time. I can’t get over how incredible you are doing. Thanks for sharing ☮️
Sorry to hear that Margaret. Hope you are getting better each day. Try to focus on the present and all the things you can do each day, rather than thinking into the past about fitness a few weeks ago. Easier said than done I know, but you will get stronger again and given time get back to where you were and beyond! All the best to you and wishing you a great recovery!
Fantastic video Ben, superb production and fascinating information. You deserve your own TV programme, genuinely.
Too kind Thomas! ☺️
After a nice 7km run I come home and BAM - a new Ben Parkes video... what a great Wednesday!
Great to see you running so well and so soon after Injury- a lot of work to get there I’m sure! Just wanted to let you know that I am on my first week of an 18 week training program I bought from your website (about a month ago). Super excited. I’ve only had two runs, but nailed them both. Aiming for anywhere between 3:15 and 3:30 for my first marathon (Amsterdam in October).Thank you for all the inspiration! Your tips and tricks and advice have made a massive impact on my running. Quite a newbie to the sport, but loving it! All the best and keep it going!!
All the best in your quest Jeremy! Sub 3:30 is on the cards.. you can do it! 🙌
Ben Parkes 🙏💪🏼😎
Fabulous analysis Shane - and very well received Ben (I know I was really upset after my 6 months in hospital from a coma) - but stay positive - keep that image in you brain about you're old self.... and that's you're target!!!!
Have you thought about running the Ridgeway? It's the oldest path in the UK and 87 miles of trail! Would be an awesome video and it's just outside London.
This was so interesting! As somebody who has overcome a few different injuries with one quite recently, I found that this channel and your positive attitude Ben has really got me through it! I love your videos and I’ve learned so much from them!
Thank you! What injury did you have recently? All sorted now??
@@BenParkes I'm not 100% sure what it was but I had a really sore collarbone (like toothache!) every time I ran and it was super painful! All good now though :)!
Shane is a wizard! I went up for a session with him last year and learnt a ton and what a nice bloke. Can’t believe your recovery, it’s fantastic. Just look back at the first video Ben when your feeling low and see how far you came in such a short space of time. Brilliant. I’m sure you’ll be winning many more races in the future - just don’t get tempted to buy another skateboard :)
Hi Ben! You might want to look into the HRM Run strap by Garmin to get advanced running dynamics which shows your left and right balance. After the run you might be able see your progress and if your favoring a side. Good luck as you continue to work on those changes. Cheers from USA!
I have the pod, as find the strap uncomfortable. So have been using that in my own running. Works surprisingly well!! Hope you are all good!
That's very interesting. I thought I could see that - although I thought I might have been imagining it at the time - when you did your 5k back from injury. I felt that you were going 'gingerly' on your right side, which would make sense obviously after having an injury there.
Great video Ben! Did Thames Trot last year but opposite weather conditions. Finally got some Pieminister Pies - lovely!
Haha.. great pies. I did the trot once, never again.. the weather is always soooooooo miserable!!!!!
Love your positivity for upcoming races. I still hope London will go ahead with some sort of precautions and limitations (waves, crowd restrictions, etc) , but after Boston announcement I am starting to worry a little bit.
Fingers crossed
Hopefully see you there Simone!
Great singlet Ben, pretty grouse that you get to rep it in the UK! Nice one mate
Nice to see you enjoying my part of the woods.
That's a great "The running company "Ballarat shirt mate!
Cheers! Hope I can visit the store for real one day!
YES! Tim Noakes, Lore of Running, Central Governor...love to hear these things coming up in running conversation
Great to see the trails in Goring again, see you in September maybe!
Newport marathon (already postponed to October) is now off for this year...Moved to April next year...
Maybe some small local events might be able to take place later in the year but, unfortunately, I can't see any bigger events taking place...
Hey...I thought I spotted that compensation when you did the 5k but it wasn't big. Could see a sliiiight compensation? I enjoy watching you and others and how people run. I love analysing people too. It's so much fun to do actually
Good to see you are on the mend! Noticed the compensation in the 5k TT. Are you not concerned you are coming back to soon?
Every professional I’ve spoken to says everything is fine, so just going by their advice!
You can hear a difference in the way your feet hit the ground when you’re running. Be really interesting to see how things change as you work on the points mentioned. Recovered really well!
TRC Ballarat singlet!!!! Nice choice
Great video as always.
Would be v interested to know how I could work out my own stride length for each leg - maybe a future video?
Hey! You need some special kit, with sensors for each leg. Sorry I don't know what the system is called. Shane has it.. but we couldn't use it in this session due to social distancing.. So these were just educated estimates in the video. I don't think it's something you can really do without the specialist kit. Garmin running dynamics will just give you an average for both legs stride lengths. A good indictor if you have Garmin running dynamics is the Left and Right balance percentage.. if that is out then the stride length could well be different. All the best to you Jared!
@@BenParkes it might have been dartfish?
Adam Ede honestly have no idea.. but I’ll ask Shane!
Training is going great though I'm not training for anything specifically right now. That said, I did run 71 miles this last week which felt great!
Kudos to you!! 71 miles 🙌
This week i did start my training for the marathon in Frankfurt or Barcelona. Which one i will run depends on which Marathon will take Place. I am using your plan for the first time. I am looking forward to that.
Fingers crossed you get to run one of them Hans. Good luck from me!
Another great vlog Ben! Have an injury myself and finding it hard to not jump back into training, just keeping all the running 'easy'. Frustrating but hopefully it will pay off in the long term. Love the singlet too - is there a Ballarat in the UK or did someone send it from Australia?
I bought it online to support someone who runs a running store in Ballarat Australia! It’s a lovely singlet!
@@BenParkes you'll have to come to Victoria for a race (once the borders open up)!
My right leg is so much stronger than my left as seen by how much easier I can do pistol squats on it and I know I favour it when running. My Garmin RD pod always shows about 49/51 split favouring my right leg and I’m trying to correct that.
Also, my best stride length at the moment seems to be around 1:25cm! I’m dreaming of your ‘bad’ 1:35! 😂
Insightful info from Shane. Nice location at Goring!
Won't the Thames Path 100 be just before London if they both go ahead? Great to see you coming back to full form!!
Yes, just before. London is looking increasingly unlikely though.. but the 100 is probably ok.. who really knows, but it’s far more likely! 0% chance of a PB in the marathon in October, but could well improve on my 100 mile time by then.. so thought it could be fun!!
I can't believe you're already out running again. Recovery super powers!
It's really quite unbelievable (without steroids).
Cool. I really had the impression your stride got shorter. :-)
But I did not spot the asymmetry . Thx for sharing Ben.
Did you get any specific exercices recommended?
Love the video Ben
Hi Ben, How does this difference in stride length affects your ground contact time balance?
Good to see you running again!
I couldn’t get all the exact data, as we couldn’t use Shane’s sensors as he has to attach them to me, as couldn’t do that with social distancing etc.. but if we had then I’d expect a shorter stride to mean lower ground contact time, compared to the other leg that has the longer / normal stride length. So less time on the ground, less force going through it. A bit like limping really!
Great to see you back running ben what are your thoughts on mass participation running events going ahead anytime this year?
Hi Ben, simple question! How often do you run with camera in your hand? Does it affect your speed in the races and your running style because you can't work with your hands properly in your run?
Not very often... just when I'm filming for RUclips. It will effect running form for sure.. I can't run how I'd normally run without the camera. So I can't run as fast as I'd normally do without the camera!
Hi ben do you go buy what running shops say about what shoes to were?. My physio seems to think I can were what ever. And that the running shops are just out there to RIP you of. What do you think about that?. One running shop I was neutral then then next one sed I was stabilized shoe
Random question: why are you wearing a Running Company Ballarat singlet? I ask as Ballarat is my home town and am wondering if you have connection to there?
No connection.. bought it to support the business there, as one of the owners (Julian) is on a podcast that’s really helped my running over the past couple of years!
Ben Parkes what a great idea. Nice work. Thanks for the poddy recommendation. It’s awesome listening to them talk about runs that I used to do.
I ordered something on May 9th it was the new singlet and the matte black hat and I haven’t received it yet. I live in the US.
Sorry to hear that. If you could email me at ben @ benparkes.com then I'll look into it for you! If it has been lost in the post then we can sort out a replacement, so don't worry!
4:08, can you see that described effect in your Garmin activity, balance of left and right leg?
Moose would be happy seeing you in that top!
What running belt do you use? Have you got any recommendations for them?
Do you see any change in the ground contact balance time?
0:56 it's *chooosday*
You ran right past George Michaels house beside that bridge near the end!
Great video
I can't see any mass races going ahead this year. Do you ?
Maybe Valencia, which is December. And then I guess some countries that haven’t been effected as much might have bigger races. But yes, big city marathons seem a long way away right now! Hopefully some smaller trail races will be back soon!
I’ve entered the Melbourne marathon in October - organisers still expecting it to go ahead. Situation much better here though at the moment. Fingers crossed!
Do you think races will happen this year with the social distances measured put in place ?
Some races will in my opinion.. but can’t see any major city marathons happening. Maybe come December, January time at the earliest. Who really can tell though!
Hi mate how do you do Strides?.
I’m just starting to introduce them back into my routine.. really good thing to do!
Sorry Jason.. I misread what you wrote. Strides are about 20 seconds of running at 95% effort.. so REALLY fast. Then a 30 second rest. Maybe try 4 reps to start with. They really help with strength and form!
@@BenParkes wow that's easy to understand lol fought it was going to be more difficult. So aim I best to do after any slow run?. And can you do this up hills thank you cause seen on other people you tube channels and didnt understand them your the best
Jason cooper best to do strides on the flat. Yes, after a slower / easy run is a good time. So basically 4 reps of 20 seconds running really fast, 95% effort, 30 seconds rest.. enjoy!
Boo I’m injured so will have to play the waiting game
You need to change something in your look to man for example hair cut. But keep working I take a lot from you running information
