You can pretty much throw a dart at their whole discography, at least from "Tonight's Decision" onwards. (Because I don't know much from their older stuff.)
Fun fact. Singer Jonas kinda destroyed his voice doing growls early on their career, so they had to call Mikael to growl on Brave Murder Day. Fun and all (not really, more like sweet depression and all), but Mikael had Opeth, so they decided to move on from growls and have Jonas sing clean, adapting the music to a more melodic style in the process.
Glad you liked it! If you are into "sadness and pain", then Katatonia is definitely the go-to band. Since you are new to the band, I would suggest doing a couple of other songs from the same album. Some recommendations : In the White, Deliberation, Dissolving Bonds, Unfurl.
when it comes to "sadness and pain", I doubt anything will ever top Mirror Reaper by Bell Witch, for me. It does need some love for slow and ambient, and the right mood, but when it all clicks, the emotions will hit you like a train. It's best described as a journey (and not only because of its length). I still hope that at some point, someone will do full reaction to it. Also great band for "sadness and pain" were Woods of Ypres, especially their last album (particularly due to the circumstances surrounding its release). Songs like Traveling Alone, Silver or Kiss My Ashes Goodbye just hit a lot. And they were much closer to Katatonia in sound than Bell Witch are
@@elkapro6534 Glad that someone else listens to Woods of Ypres. Shards of love and I was buried in Mount Pleasant Cemetery are probably my favorites. Really tragic with what happened to David. I will check out Bell Witch. Haven't listened to any songs by them.
Old Heart Falls is like a "manifesto" of.. being.. there (whatever "there" is, emotionally). Evidence is very "funny" lyrically (I mean, the way it is written.. nothing is FUNNY going by with Katatonia). Honestly... almost everything u pick up from Katatonia (at least, the last 5-6 albums, guessing ur tastes) it will be a great moment (to enjoy.. and to watch u enjoyin). Anyway, some days ago the new song came out.. few reactions atm.. Very catchy poppy song, but, as usual, great imho. Keep on!!
Deliberation is a personal favourite off TGCD, and it was second in the poll. Lobbying for Lethean in a future poll, another earcather on the level of My Twin
Katatonia - Decima is one of my all time favorite songs (maybe even my all time favorite song). Think that one should be next, you'll be forever in love with Katatonia.
I have a huge bag of suggestions: From "The Great Cold Distance": Leaders, In The White, Soil`s Song, Journey Trough Pressure, Dissolving Bonds. From "Night Is the New Day": The Longest Year, Liberation, Nephilim, Inheritance. From "Dead End Kings": Lethean, Dead Letters, Ambitions, Second. From "The Fall of Hearts": Old Heart Falls, Decima, Shifts. From "City Burials": Heart Set to Divide, Vanishers, Lacquer. From "Viva Emptiness": Evidence, Burn the Remembrance. From "Last Fair Deal Gone Down": Teargas, Passing Bird. From "Tonight's Decision": For My Demons. From "Discouraged Ones": Deadhouse, Relention, Saw You Drown. From "Brave Murder Day": Brave, Day.
Greetings from Sweden. Katatonia is such a great and unike band. Jonas Renske has a haunting voice and its like no other. Loving to take part on your journey. I must say that your reactions are a treat to watch. So much personality and your lovely sence of humor. Keep it up 😊
I only came across your channel because of Katatonia and I love the reaction. More people need to hear them. An amazing band, a unique sound and easily one of the best voices in "metal".
FINALLY!!!😍😍😍 Wonderful reaction! Just reminds me of how much I love your format: Listen (backwards and forwards) and talk as much as you like (we know the songs and want to hear your spontaneous thoughts) THEN do a full listen off camera and give your final thoughts. Such a great concept! Would suggest Consternation for a different but awesome(!) song by them. (But maybe save it for a bit) Wealth is another banger of a melancholic prog metal song. And... The City of Glass is just SO beatutiful!! (Also from Viva Emptiness. A killer album! - but they have a few...)
There are way to many great katatonia songs to choose 😭 ones i been jamming lately (a pretty varied mix as it is with these guys) - Liberation - takeover - old heart fall - city glaciers - lacquer
Ive been recommendeding Heart Set to Divide, Hypnone or Onward into Battle for over a year, and it would be great to have you listen to them, but, I'm going to recommend In the White, it's on the same album, and the sooner you get through the album, the sooner you can own it :)
Time for the Katatonia rabbit hole. You should try something from Tonight's Decision (maybe For My Demons or A Darkness Coming) or Last Fair Deal Gone Down (I'd recommend Dispossession or Clean Today). Those are both fantastic albums. A bit different in tone from this one and from each other, but completely necessary on this journey. Have fun! 🤘🔥🤘
If you remember listening to bloodbath (which now, that you like the demon, you might enjoy more of their songs), their bassist (you do love bass guy) is non other than Katatonia's singer. Their guitarist is also part of the band.. Katatonia's earlier work had growls and guess who lended his voice? Mr. Mikael Åkerfeldt. it's a small world after all
This is like a Katatonia instant classic. I recommend : Murder, for early days Chrome, for more S tier stuff Atrium, this their newest single for the upcoming album and it's a total banger! Enjoy! Can't get enough of your awesome reactions. 😁
Go way back in the discography - the first Katatonia song I heard was 'Brave', when I used to go to a death metal record store, and the guy I always talked to put it on as a personal recommendation - it's a hypnotic track and completely changed my perspective on how metal could sound
"My Twin" was my favorite too for a while, before I heard "July", which I heard just shortly after (same album :p). lol I would be very surprised if it stayed your favorite. It's a great song, don't get me wrong, but they have so many great songs, the likelihood you find a new favorite is HIGH. As far as their singles go, "My Twin", I would say, is one of their best. I think the reason it sticks with you so, is not only because it was your first, but also because it is accessible, catchy, and has a pretty standard, easily-stuck-in-your-head song structure. Just a few reasons it was picked as one of their singles. The singles, for me, tend to have less longevity. I highly recommend "Unfurl". You'll thank me. Very confident in this. 😛 And "Leaders" is another good one. Both those recommendations are off the same album as "My Twin", "The Great Cold Distance". Easily one of their best albums.
You'd Probably like their song 'Lethean' a lot, its one of their more popular songs, still "sad/depressing" and not too heavy for you =p. Just saw them in concert a few days ago, and they were great.
Katatonia songs: Criminals , Wait Outside, Evidence, Promise of Deceit, I Transpire, Tonight's Music.. from Discouraged Ones through to City Burials, their music is a journey into lonely nights under the street lamps.
Fun fact- Jonas (Katatonia) and Mikael (demon, Opeth) are best friends! Mikael recorded part of Blackwater Park at Jonas’ house and provided vocals for some of Katatonia’s early stuff.
I remember getting into Katatonia when I saw them live at an extreme metal festival in England. I had never heard about them before and I didn’t even know what songs of us were good, but after hearing from live, I remember find a lot of their albums and loving them.
Please do not wait another full month to do the next one, please! :-) Thanks by the way, great reaction. Love it! I`m a fan of Katatonia, guess you figured that out. Pick just about any song from this album and forward (not so familiar with their older work) and you will enjoy., I promise.
KATATONIA: Residual (please react to this song) ...I love Jonas Renske's voice as well but I have a question. Whose voice do you love more, Maynard from TOOL or Jonas from KATATONIA?
Love Katatonia! You could try a more melodic (if is possible with them) song like Lacquer or more of a full sound in their new song Atrium... You just can't go wrong with them. Old Heart Falls is one of my favourites. So many options. Do them all! Thanks again Lauren!
I would suggest to go through their "The Great Cold Distance (10th Anniversary Edition)" first to get habituated to their sound. Their sound has changed a few times throughout their career, but I think TGCD should be a good starting point as the songs in that album are relatively simpler and catchier compared to the songs in the newer albums.
Katatonia rules. My personal favorite record of theirs - and I don't think it's an especially common view - is The Fall of Hearts. More "moody" than "dark," but some of the best songs and atmospheres they've put together their whole career. If I had to suggest something else from this album, I'd go with "Increase" or "In the White." Otherwise, my recommendations for someone new would be "Residual," "Lethean," or "Rein," if you want something quite recent.
If you are that in love with his voice, listen to “In The White” live in the album titled “Sanctitude”. Get ready for chills. Also, he is best friends with Akerfeldt. Also plays bass with him in Bloodbath, back when Akerfeldt was still in the band.
I'm quite the fan of 'Tonight's Music', 'Sweet Nurse', 'Teargas', 'Evidence' off Viva Emptiness, 'Deadhouse'... This band fascinates me. They're so beautiful, but more than a few songs have some part in it that brings the entire song to a halt for me. But in the same token, each song also has some absolutely gorgeous part in it. He has a great voice! Is lovely a bad descriptor for his voice? I don't care. It's lovely. Also, is it bad to say this reminds me of Opeth? Anyway, this was really good. You're so fun, Lauren. I truly appreciate all you do for us. I almost forgot...U. of American Samoa? : )
Should really check out their newest (studio) album, "City Burials." Would you believe they've only gotten better with time? If you love My Twin, Lacquer might honestly break you.
I know you need to save things for reaction but if you love these tunes this much, you need to do a deep dive on them. For me, from their album Viva Emptiness to the Fall of Hearts is the best stretch of albums from any band I've ever heard. Night is the New Day and Dead End Kings have been in my top 5 albums since they came out. Make sure to dive into their B sides and extra tracks as well. The track Vakaren is in swedish, I don't even know what he's singing, but the emotion and atmosphere, Jonas' voice, just absolutely hypnotizing and I can listen to the track for literally hours. Also, Unfurl, another track that wasn't included on an album is one I can get lost in for hours at a time. They are a band that's beyond special if you don't mind getting lost in melancholy.
Anything from this album is great. If you want a slightly less seasoned sound, go with “Burn the Remembrance” from the previous album, but do the remaster because the original has ridiculously bad drum sounds. If you want a more progressed sound, go with a track from their next album, such as “The Longest Year.”

@@MusicCatsandCoffee I was more referring to many of the recommendations now. There is a weird element of Katatonia fans that really don't like anything after Great Cold Distance, and they only recommend old stuff. You will learn very quickly their production and sound PRE-Great Cold Distance is VASTLY different than post Great Cold Distance.
Throw a dart at any song on this album, they’re all great!
You can pretty much throw a dart at their whole discography, at least from "Tonight's Decision" onwards. (Because I don't know much from their older stuff.)
One of the best albums ever produced/composed, The Great Cold Distance, from start to finish. Never heard anything like since.

Katatonia - Journey Through Pressure !

You should definitely check "Brave" or "Murder" from Katatonia. By the way, the vocals there are performed by Demon also known as Mikael Åkerfeldt :)
Katatonia is great. Recently they dropped a new single. More poppy, but still you can hear the darkness in their sound.
