This song, alone, among all their other songs, is why I tried to vote them into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame back in 2019. I heard the sirens when Dime died. I saw his guitar on display. They will get there. Just an amazing group and my history.
Dime is the best guitarist of the 90s and one of best musicians in that decade that seems to get either boxed in or discounted because of Pantera's unique style and aggression. It's sort of like how horror films are seldom considered for awards for best picture or best performance, just because of the genre. The same can be said for Vinny Paul, he's an all-time drummer, meaning he's one of the best ever, but further than that for both Abbott brothers, they have the quality of uniqueness where if you hear a 5 to 10 second clip you can identify them. But they're just not spoke of in that way, and I say this not as Pantera fan, I like Pantera but I'm not one of their hardcore fans. In learning guitar and digesting some of the collection consensus from players and critics and media, you'll never seen Dime or Vinny at the top of any sort of recognized list. It makes 0 sense to me other than sour grapes. Pantera could play anything they wanted to musicially, they had that skill and talent. But they played what they wanted to 1000%. That level of self assurance with who they were as a band, seems to rub a lot of mf'ers the wrong way and I do not get it. I would put Pantera at their best up against any of the legends of Rock and Metal in their prime and Pantera would mop the floor with almost all of them. It's a f'king fact.
Pantera were just unbelievable when I was a teenager and seeing them Live every single summer over and over. It was by far a great album and Cemetery Gates still remains one of the best gut punching guitar solos by Dimebag. Vinnie Paul gets a little saucy in a few spots and it’s awesome. There was nothing that this album didn’t have and it still blows my mind!
Vinnie I feel doesn’t get enough love sometimes, but his parts always fit the music perfectly, he’s like the ringo starr of metal, as the songs wouldn’t be complete without his creative input and execution.
I knew you're gonna do a reaction of Cemetery Gates eventually. Ryan is so right about people often creating their best stuff in their lowest moments in life, cause it all comes from the heart. Love Nick's guitar faces, your appreciation for this song and detailed expression. That's why your channel is the best IMHO when it comes to reacting to music. I'm watching this third time. :)
The first time I ever heard a song from pantera it was from a metalhead coworker back in the late 90’s (I wasn’t into metal back then) and while we were cleaning up during closing, he played this song on loud speaker at the job and it stuck with me. That riff is instantly recognizable.
Yes, it's most people's favorite Pantera song. Pantera's fans may be inured to the repetative aspect of continuous replay of the song over the years...but the first time everyone hears this ...the thrill is real 🙂
I love the reverence shown in this reaction for Darrell's sound and ability, Phil's vocals, and the band as a whole. Being 6th generation Texan from the DFW area and being in my late teens/early twenties when they were coming up in the scene probably makes me a bit partial, but I think this is one of the greatest metal bands to ever grace the Earth. I don't think I'm exaggerating, even a lil bit. This will always be one of my favorite Pantera songs and I am so glad y'all loved it so much.
I'm left a little speechless after that incredible ending. It sure is proof that great art can be born out of pain. Loved both halves of the musical yin-yang composition and performance. As you said, Nick, way to end a Halloween marathon...all treats, no tricks.
I discovered weed and Pantera in 10th grade with my group of friends. I discovered Nirvana around same time. I'm 33 now have a gig this weekend and coming off 4 gigs in a row haha lets just say those two bands inspired me tremendously 😁😀😀😀😀👍
Discovered weed in 5th, and Pantera in 6th. Then came Down. I found so many bands because of shirts Pantera and other favorites wore. Back when you still had to buy it to find out if it was worth it. Also was in bands and doing tristate tours. Good times. 😂
Ok guys with that you excited reaction to my fav band of all times … you got me and my subscription 😝🤘 My advice: did I oversee you reaction to DOMINATION live from Moscow 1991 (a crowd of about 1mio!!!!) If your talking about Dimes best solo it’s your „duty“ to watch an kneel down to this one! 😝🤘💣❤️
Just a suggestion fellas.. If you like Pantera, I would encourage you to react to the band "DEATH". Yes, that's the name. Lol. Considered the pioneers of Death Metal. Released 7 albums. You guys will get an instant boost in your Views, and your Subscriptions with a whole new genre! And they come with loyalty. Plus! you will be enlightened by one of the worlds greatest musicians. Chuck Schuldiner (RIP) - Vocals, Lead Guitar, songs writer. You will hear legendary drumming, guitar playing. And fretless bass. I know you guys will appreciate the abilities of the band. I recommend starting with the final album "The Sound of Perseverance". Track - Flesh and the Power it Holds (it's about a lifestyle of sin) The band has 2 lead guitarists and most songs have at least 2 solos. Occasional Bass solos as well. Good Luck! 🤘
I haven’t heard a lot of Pantera but I do know a few of their songs, this being one of them. Not a fan of metal but I like this one a hell of a lot. The vocals are great and the music is AWESOME. Good choice. Happy birthday, Ryan, from a fellow Scorpio.
Got to see them in the late 90s at Louisville Gardens. Started playing this one, Phil said f*** all of you all, and they walked off. End of show. Still glad i go to see them.
I have found the lyrics bit ambiguous, but then interpreted them that he leaves the past to be, not forgotten but moving forward in life, "past the gates", not going through them or leaving behind them to dwell.
I can't help but chuckle when metal is called *groove* - that word described a very different style during the 60's, 70's & 80's. If you like Pantera, you will like *Down*. Start with NOLA 🍻
Wait, you guys havent done Psycho Holiday, Primal Concrete Sledge, Domination, Regular People, or Shedding Skin yet???? Oh shit!!!!!! You guys are in for a ride!
If you want to hear how good Phil's voice can be, give a listen to the first Pantera album that Phil was part of called 'Power Metal', it was the album right before this one. I'm not sure if it's on any of the streaming services, but it is on youTube.
It’s a great song for sure, not sure it’s better than the stage by avenged sevenfold but it’s a fucking awesome song regardless. I love Pantera, I’ll be seeing them open for Metallica in June 2025 here in Tampa FL
Pantera! Friends. Darrell was my daughter’s BFs dad. The girls were together the night he got shot. I was a jock in Dallas and was first to play this LP on air. Thanks to Dime. He is so missed. He would win all the guitar competitions we had. ☮️❤️😎🎼
@@puppetmaster8551unless Rita had a son that I’m not aware of that wasn’t biologically related to Dime, I don’t see how the OP comment can be true whatsoever. :edit: even if BF is meant as “best friends”, the comment still stands.
YESSSS!!!! You guys took my suggestion from at least two of the Pantera videos I recently commented on!!!! 🙌🏻 I KNEW you guys would be blown away by this song!!!! 🤘🏻🐻🤘🏻 I mean, so is everybody the first time they hear it. Believe it or not, I never heard the studio version of "Cemetery Gates" until 2005. From the incredible vocals, I didn't even realize it was Pantera at first. (I actually thought it was Queensrÿche the first couple of times I heard it. Then, the third time I heard it was when the DJ said it was Pantera and I was absolutely blown the fuck away.) I immediately realized that, of course, the music was definitely Pantera, but what had majorly confused me was I had no idea that back in that day, Phil Anselmo could actually SING like that!!!! (The very first song I heard by Pantera was "This Love" - another great song that you guys should definitely do, probably next - and so all ever I knew Phil's voice for was the growliness and the screaming/shouting.) But on "Cemetery Gates," Phil combines soft and wistful, soft and dreamy with his typical screaming/shouting, but then all of a sudden turning into Geoff Tate of Queensrÿche at the end of each chorus, and in the end part of the song!!!! I am STILL blown-away by EVERYTHING in this incredible Pantera epic: Dimebag's INCREDIBLE guitar licks 'n' riffs, Rex Brown's amazing pulsating bass tone, Vinnie Paul's HUMONGOUS drums and drum fills, and Phil Anselmo's INSANE vocal range. I had no idea that, way back in the day, Phil Anselmo could actually REALLY SING!!!! "Cemetery Gates" is one of my all-time Top 50 favorite songs of all-time. 34 years later and counting it still packs a HUMONGOUS punch!!!! When I saw the thumbnail, I was so fucking excited. YESSSS, you guys did it!!!! 💜💜💜💜 And y'all were as blown-away as I knew you'd be!!!! This might be my favorite review of yours!!!! Thank you so much, guys!!!! WOOHOO!!!! YOU DID IT!!!! 🤘🏻🐻🤘🏻
The sorrow in the first part of the solo is instant tears for me
It was my 7261 time listening to this song and 7261 times that this gave me goosebumps 😅
This was all of us the first time we heard it too 🙂…Im here for the next one.
Finally, a Cemetery Gates reaction with the intro
Ikr? It's a huge part of it, and actually gives context to the second verse.
That intro is super necessary.
There is a special place in Hell for those that do not play the full version.
One of the most beautiful songs ever written period!
There is no bad Pantera song!
This song, alone, among all their other songs, is why I tried to vote them into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame back in 2019. I heard the sirens when Dime died. I saw his guitar on display. They will get there. Just an amazing group and my history.
That is how you write the perfect song.
this is how you react to cemetery gates.
I think that solo is in the top 100 guitar solos of all time.
The Abbott Brothers. Fuck yes. The world was better with them in it. FLY HIGH BOYS #getchapull #lightemup
The more times you listen to this song the more you hear from it.
3:35 that's what's been missing from everyone else's reactions. Thanks boys.

Floods is justbas great as this song, in my opinion. Different but equal.
Avoid the light crushes both

The first time I heard this song (I had this on cd when cds first came out) I had it on 20 letting the house fill with this entire album.
Dimebag Darrell uses that parametric equalizer along with his Randall lamp to get that cutting edge sound to
Here's to you, Ryan! Have a 🔥birthday and an amazing, music-filled year.
What a song to react to on your birthday. A perfect metal song, it's a classic, happy birthday.
The thing about cemeteries is that everyone is dying to get in there.

Been playing that song on repeat for the past couple of months. Just incredible vocals, guitar..the whole thing!

Filthy good. ❤
Thank god yall did the studio version and not the video. The video completely cuts the acoustic intro 😢
Def check out Floods.
1st major label album. The early stuff was all self released. This is considered their official debut album.
saw them on this first tour in Denver, was pretty crazy. Great song, thanks for the reaction.
Cowboys from hell and Walk are great groovy metal songs, but this is a complete song with a good story and 🔥 🔥 solo
I have found the lyrics bit ambiguous, but then interpreted them that he leaves the past to be, not forgotten but moving forward in life, "past the gates", not going through them or leaving

Old school plenty of good tunes enjoy
Absolute banger ! And to keep on all this energy, you should try "Heresy", another banger :)

Must listen to WALK next!!🤘🤘
Them Abbott brothers huh!? I hope they are jamming in multi- dimensions. ☮️💜🤘🔥
Happy Birthday Ryan!!🤘🔥
Happy birthday from North of the border, Ryan.
Best reaction to this Ive seen! Thank you so much for reacting to the whole track! The video edit ruins it imo.
