  • Matty Healy is known for his onstage antics and ironic performance of fame, but he’s always been somewhat guarded. On the 1975’s new album, Being Funny in a Foreign Language, he leans into sincerity in a way he’s never done before. In this wide-ranging interview, he discussed everything from the transcendent power of music to his problem with the band Oasis.

    I love how despite all his grandiose statements and ideas, the real foundation of all of Matty's creativity seem to stem from his deep connection to his bandmates and he constantly admits to this. It’s not something I really want to control. We all have that part of us. Overall they give so much to fans. As a gen Xer it’s also been a long time since a band had such a sense of style. The comment about not wanting to price kids out of tickets sums The 1975 up. Despite all their success, they've managed to maintain the heart of why they make music and it's why fans have stuck around for 10 years. They get it.

      @AshHardman2011 Год назад +9

      i guess its just as they move to bigger venues, the price climbs up to be able to reap some cost back for the amount they probably spend on production costs. but at least they arent charging prices like the Elton John's, Billy Joel's of the world who are charging £100+ for a ticket.
      but i remember going to see The 1975 when they charged 15 quid, and then a while later it climbed to £30+, and then this last show where they are now playing arena's it was like £46.50, so its steadily climbing up but also a lot of the charges are put on top from Ticketmaster which starts to make it seem extortionate for some gigs.

    genuinely, matty healy is one of the greatest living artists of our time. i've been a fan of the band for a decade now, and watching their growth as artists has been such a privelege. i saw the current show a few times, and the questions he encourages his audience to ask both of themselves and of the world/media/culture are revolutionary. the tour itself is revolutionary. it's frustrating to watch people mischaracterize him so much, but i think it's also because people are so used to artists who are too scared to make any real statements with their work. but what is the point of art if you're not pushing culture forward?

    My husband and I went to see them in Belfast and he was so overwhelmed by how Matty talked about masculinity and the pressure of that and love and softness in male friend relationships. It really moved him and it moved me too. He is a fresh voice even if you don’t agree with everything he says I’m glad he’s talking about this. It’s getting men talking about their mental health for sure.

    I love how insightful all of Mattys interviews are. I wish he did more , I get why he doesn’t do them anymore but when he does it’s like that expression of looking into a window of his soul. He worries about his ranting but that’s the genuine parts of him that we as fans love. He goes on tangents about subjects because he truly cares about the topic . He’s wonderful. I’m glad it sounds like he has so much happiness in his day to day. That’s all us as fans want for him and the band. Amazing interview on both ends.

    My husband and I are both illustrators, and I always love listening to Matty talk about creativity because it often transcends disciplines. Hearing a musician talking about creativity oddly helps me in my own world of art and design. He talks about a lot of things we've been talking about lately as well... and it's cool to feel like these ideas are in the zeitgeist.

    as a fan I truly feel like the 1975’s music is unearthed. i get what hes saying, and he will never get that element of what we view their music as (because he’s the creator and not simply a fan)- how powerful and sentimental their music and art became and what it emotionally holds over millions of fans across the world and the mark it has in our lives. He knows we soundtracked (and soundtrack) our lives to it…as he said before. it is just incredibly unbelievable that its all real. he should be so proud! incredible interview.

    So refreshing to listen to a young pop star be so open about his real feelings and thoughts, not trying to win popularity, or shy to speak his passion for music, especially when he brings up when something bigger than the artist takes over and a song transcends the listener to feel something they needed brought out. So free and articulate.
    He gives his points of view openly, one can disagree, which makes opportunity for good discussion.

He digs deep with what Matt is trying to say and clarifies in a way that makes sense for a casual fan but also dings a lot of bells for any 1975 “true fan.” He puts him on the spot but not in a “click bait” kind of way just a journalist trying to get the best story kind of way.
