  • #vanlife, #camping,.#nomad,
I come across some of the most interesting people doing van lifre. At 73 Don is one of the most interesting. Although he graduated from one of the most prestigious schools in the country he chose a path in life that took him across the globe and back. He has lived in a commune, studied under a spiritual master in India and learned to speak 5 or more different languages fluently. Over the past four decades he has lived in multiple vans as a nomad and a host of other alternative living situations, all the time seeking to become an increasingly more evolved and compassionate being. Don currently lives in his truly no build no frills Astro minivan in a secluded forest setting. Living on social security Don demonstrates that it is possible to be content in life with few material possessions.

I have also found the RV community to in general be the most accepting and caring community I have ever encountered. I often wonder why that is. I have speculated that perhaps people who can live without the usual social constraints are a different kind of people. But, I just don't know. I only know the kindness is true and genuine.

People who use their brains solely to make money lose the value of fellow humans and become selfish to the point that they themselves won't be aware of it. Those who use their brains in understanding the functionality of this entire system cannot make lots of money but gain wisdom that helps in recognizing the value of humans. During storms, floods, tornados, and other disasters, I travelled to be on location. I lived in my pickup, as did many other employees in the electrical trade. Sometimes I would get home on weekends, sometimes I would be camping out for years at a time. Making house payments.
I and my co-workers kept the lights on and homes warm during disasters, day and knight for years, and nobody knew about the unsung heroes out in the cold, rain, snow wind etc..... homeless . with the dangers, of downed trees power lines. Keeping hospitals, emergency centers, and homes functioning, all the while risking life, and limb. Your welcome. 😊 We never know who is homeless. This human is a yogi. It took one sentence in a book to help him realize he was enlightened and needed further training. He trusted and followed his gut. From that moment on, his spiritual journey began. I spent years ignoring my gut and then one day, simply followed the call. He is much braver than I answering the call with “so much to lose.” The fact he is a yogi is clearly evident during the interview. It is almost comical once you understand the cues of someone living this way. There are others like him, in fact many. They make soup in the street, clean homes, and yes, wash windows. So be careful how you treat others, you never know who you are talking to. Bless you brother. Namaste.

You traded in family values for sexual freedom and cable TV.

I’ve been on the road without a fixed address and had a great setup (Ford F250 with a cap) I had a sleeping platform for storage etc, but I tell you what, it wasn’t easy or glamorous and I eventually found affordable housing. I pay between 1k-1200 a month between rent and utilities and consider that affordable. I also had two elderly hunting dogs that were so happy when we got a home. They loved the last two years of their life in a stable environment. Believe me, it was fun and they enjoyed being nomadic, but it was time to settle down.

Yes never judge a book by its cover. My grandson is a very ill man. Lifelong illness. Just had a security guard who watched him pay for food in a supermarket. Then stopped him and said he hadn't paid Even took photos. The lass at the checkout confirmed he had paid. How dreadful for him to go through this experience because he is different. Told him to go to Manager which he will. Not good enough. 😢

There truly are some fascinating people out there and I just love talking to them and hearing and sharing their life stories. I find that the ones who are sometimes the most fascinating are the people who present one way visually and have so much more to them when you pull back the layers a bit. It reminds me of that line in Forest Gump when he says something to the effect of life being like a box of chocolates and you never know what is inside!
