Sulforaphane supplements vs. broccoli sprouting | Rhonda Patrick

- Sulforaphane, an isothiocyanate compound, is the most potent naturally-occurring inducer of the body's key detoxification enzymes. While sulforaphane is available in supplement form, it is derived naturally from a variety of cruciferous vegetables such as Brussels sprouts, kale, and mustard greens, with the highest quantities available from broccoli sprouts. Sprouting is labor-intensive, however, and prone to contamination, while purchasing supplements can be costly. In this clip, Dr. Rhonda Patrick describes the advantages and disadvantages of the various dietary and supplemental sources of sulforaphane.

I'm happy to see that I'm not alone in hoping for a re-visitation on the subject of eating the seeds directly (see the many comments below). They seem to trouble my digestion, and there is apparently some concern about Erucic acid (though my reading on the subject made me not worry about that.) It'd be great to have a video or podcast supplement about the safety of eating the ground seeds, the Erucic acid question, and any insights on reducing the digestive issues (if I'm not the only one.) It's tremendously convenient and cheap to just eat the seeds ground and added to soup, etc. I don't mind the flavor at all, myself. Thanks for considering it, and thanks for your great work!
Is the power form of broccoli sprouts effective...? I bought a bag online...
Shelf-life?
Thank you
Is the powder form effective?
@@ericsheaffer5083 Not sure if you were asking me, but: I don't know. I understand sulforaphane (and the glucoraphanin/myrosinase precursors) to be pretty fragile / difficult to preserve, so I'd be a little surprised if it lasted through drying.

BrocElite has naturally derived stabilized sulforaphane in the capsule. It's made in the US!
Add some apple cider vinegar to the last soak of your sprouts to cleanse and disinfect them of any growths. Drain well without re-rinsing. They will last longer and stay fresher.
Broccoli sprouts are one of the few greens I find tasty.
I’m with you, we are a rare breed. Most people hate them I think they taste great.
I wouldn't say that sulfuraphan is the most potent inducer of the body's detoxification enzymes, but it is the best analysed by science.
There are dozens of other glucosinolates we know very little about, except that they seem to have a beneficial effect on our health.

i don't know the difference in concentration between sprouts and microgreens.......i started growing them as microgreens for about 7-10 days and then cutting the little plants with kitchen scissors and storing them in a lettuce container in the 'fridge and add them to my salads every day.
The point is this....i've grown the sprouts in mason jars and found the microgreens much much easier with much less work involved. takes about 5 minutes to set up a tray and then add water about every 3rd day......in 7-10 days you're ready to harvest them
maybe the 7-10 day old microgreens have a lot less of the chemical than the 3 or 4 day old sprouts.....i have no idea
Thank you Dr Rhonda for bringing our attention to the benefits of sulphurophane.
I chew a teaspoon of the seeds every day. Can’t be bothered sprouting the seeds any more.
Can you please let us know of the bioavailability of blending or chewing the straight seeds?
Rusty Moran Watch podcast with dr. Jed Fahey. Take away; don’t use the seeds.
@@Crepitom Why is that the take away? All I remember them talking about in that podcast was that they supposedly don't taste good, but I and many others don't mind the taste, and even enjoy it. Am I forgetting something they talked about?
Same! I eat a teaspoon as well. Much easier and in my case safer. I have problems getting a 100% success rate without contamination and because the sprouts have a strong smell its hard for me to really notice a different bad smell that indicates bacterial or fungal contamination. I had some epic stomache ache/bloating/farting problems sometimes with the sprouts. I disinfect everything well. I soak the seeds a few minutes with vinegar and a tiny bit of chlorox. The equipment I clean, but still I get problems.
The seeds till now have been great.
@@Crepitom Hi, I listened to the podcast and the worry indicated is the presence of Erucic acid which can give health issues. But imo the amount of erucic acid in the sprouts are not negligible compared to the erucic acid in the seeds for the same amount of sulphoraphane.
On her website, Dr.Patrick states that 4ounces=113g of sprouts is within a "reasonable and healthy goal".
113g of sprouts gives *361mg* of erucic acid according to the info below:
"The erucic acid content of broccoli florets, sprouts, and seeds was found to be about 0.8, 320, and 12100 mg/100 g, respectively. Using the erucic acid limit established for canola oil in the U.S.A. and Canada as a guideline, the estimated dietary intake of erucic acid from florets and sprouts was considered of little consequence, whereas in seeds a relatively small amount (about 35 g/wk) equaled our calculated exposure limit for erucic acid. Additionally, the most complete fatty acid distribution yet published for the various forms of broccoli are presented. "
from www.researchgate.net/publication/230238870_Determination_and_Health_Implication_of_the_Erucic_Acid_Content_of_Broccoli_Florets_Sprouts_and_Seeds
A teaspoon of seeds weighs around 4g.
4 g of seeds gives *484mg* erucic acid.
This does not differ much from the level tolerated by Dr.Patrick herself.
I'm not stating that 113g of sprouts has the same amount of sulphoraphane as 4g of seeds. but Im saying that a teaspoon of seeds does not differ much from the safe range indicated by Foundmyfitness.
(btw fyi according to my own crappy calculations, for the same amount of sulphoraphane the sprouts have around 20-25% of the erucic acid than the seeds. Way less, but not negligible imo. )
Straight dry seeds? How’s your Hadith benefitting from it? Please reply. Thank you 🙏

This is interesting and some may learn from my experience. I've been taking a small cranberry juice smoothie with 15 grams of frozen 3 days ground broccoli sprouts which equates according to the Doctor to 6mg of sulforaphane for some time. If I take more it results in a colon cleanse effect.
Are you growing them yourself? Or purchasing a powder?
@@CalmVibesVee I grow them myself using the Mason jar method there are many explanations of that on RUclips on the third day I dumped them in a zip lock bag and freeze them and then when I get ready to use them I put them in the smoothie and then I with a small amount of cranberry juice actually I add a little papaya powder with them and then once they're mixed up I strain them through a strainer to strain out the husks cause I don't think they're good for you and then I can consume them it's great

@ForgiveAndLove09 I saw someone on RUclips remove the husks by putting the sprouts in a bowl of water , swishing in around, the husks floated to the top of the water. They used a strainer spoon ladle to remove the floating husks, drained the water, then froze the huskless sprouts in freezer bags
Grind broccoli seeds in a coffee grinder and use it like you would pepper.
Erucic acid is the problem with broccoli seeds. For getting the most sulforaphane it's still best to sprout the seeds for a few days and then proceed as Rhonda says here: ruclips.net/video/Z7buU-PK7_I/видео.html

Serious question.
Several grocery stores sell organic broccoli sprouts.
I keep throwing my sprouts away because they look suspicious! I can't have that contamination again 😔 Someone please do a study on taking a small amount of ground up seeds
Just make sure they can drain well, rinse them twice a day and don't keep them above 21 degree Celsius.
@@StarOnTheWater
Hey. Thanks. I do what you say but I live in a warm country.. So you suggest maybe to keep them in the fridge during the germination?
As the sprouts dry out they deploy scilia that will look like fungus growth. I actually tossed my first batch because I thought it was contaminated. Another strategy is not let the sprouts grow more than 4 days. Also rinse at least twice per session.
I retyped my question here because I was concerned about sulforaphane and thyroid ie not gall bladder (my mistake). @FoundMyFitness Dear Dr. Partrick, I have a very important question to ask about sulforaphane. Is it ok for me to take a sulforaphane supplement if I have a hypothyroid? I have read that cruciferous vegetables should be avoided with those who have hypothyroid Thank you very much for any reply you may have. Kind regards, from Australia
Freeze dried broccoli sprouts from Supersprout, an Australian company.
Lately I’ve had some bad batches. Maybe because it is winter, and the central heating system and lack of fresh air... I stopped doing it :(.

I take Broccomax but she mentioned on Joe Rogan that it's not as good as the imported one from France. She said she asked a specialist doctor about it and he said it was "eh" compared to the pharmaceutical grade ones. If you search on RUclips for "Rhonda patrick best supplement" it's a 20min video of her on Rogan and she brings up Broccomax towards the end. But for the price difference and convenience of ordering thru Amazon, I'm still taking it - figure it's better than nothing and Jarrow is usually a reputable brand. I just don't think it's going to be quite as impactful as taking the others she mentions here.
@Cookie Monster I don’t remember honestly. I take BROQ now which is the US version of the french brand she recommended.

oliver krell but it‘s only dangerous in higer doses... 🤔 smaller doses seem to be safe I thought. how much eruric acid is in one spoon of seeds?
@@oliverkrell9290 I went down the rabbit hole of Erucic acid and personally satisfied myself that it wasn't really a concern... the limits that are established aren't based on much. And the study you linked shows that 5g per day of seeds would only equal that limit, which is still a good amount of seeds. (I estimated that ~9g/day of seeds is my goal, but I'm no expert.) I'm not one to give advice (not qualified) but after a good bit of reading on the subject I'm tentatively not worried about it. The bigger issue for me is that the seeds seem to disturb my digestion a lot. Still working on that. Might be able to build up to it.
@@CaseyConnor I went through the same rabbit hole and reached the same conclusion. Plus that most or even all sulforaphane in the sprouts was already present in the seeds so it seems like a no brainer. I have been doing 10g of seeds since last summer. I have a condition that is markedly improved in 2 or 3 days of sulforaphane supplementation so I know when they work and when they don't. One thing that I noticed is that they must be ground or they won't do much for me but if you grind them too fast they will get hot and won't work either so I grind them in 4 30s pulses spaced 15min, pass them through a sieve and regrind what won't go trough for a few minutes as even if I did inactivate the enzymes I am going to mix it back with the rest that has active myrosinase. I grind 100g at a time and store them at the fridge. They never give me digestive problems even when having them on a long term fast, maybe I just tolerate them or maybe it is the grinding. They taste quite nasty but the sprouts shakes weren't much better and due to the increased volume that needs to be consumed I would say they were even worse. Maybe I am setting myself up for heart failure but seeing that a lot of widely consumed plants like mustard have significant amounts and that there doesn't seem to be any data pointing to them doing any harm but rather the opposite I think that it is ok.
Blend them up and put some smoothie + orange juice should mask the taste, no?
Dr. Patrick, I press my sprouts to remove the fiber. Does this reduce the benefits. Thanks for your time:)
