  • With us starting to calve earlier than usual this winter it seems like we have been having to watch our new born calves pretty close. Sub Zero temperatures, blizzards, and deep snow have been some of the problems we have faced. In this video we have a new born calf that is struggling to stand and nurse. We use the tools we have at our disposal to try and give it a good start to life.

      That’s one of my favorite sights also, once the calves get a little older and you start having gangs of them running around together

    Good job Bryan. Must be hard for the new born calves with cold weather. They survive that they will survive anything.

      @LuthiRanchWY  8 месяцев назад

      The cold is tough on them. If you can just make sure they get up/ dried off and get some colostrum in them they do surprisingly well

    Great landscape shots, that frost and sun was awesome I even had my wife watching it and she's an amateur photographer who takes super shots also. That calf warmer is getting a workout that's a good option for sure. I like the way you only leave them in there for an hour or so get that colostrum down em and get em back outside I just think it's better for the mom and the calf. It's a very good calf routine and it shows in the healthy vigor of your calves. Great to see another great video stay safe and take care

      Thanks George! I’ve had to use that warmer a lot more than normal it seems like this year. I agree with you, I like getting the calf back out to there mother as fast as possible. I’m glad to hear you enjoy the scenery shots! It’s such a pretty area it’s pretty easy to do haha. Hope you and your family are doing great!

      Thank Bob! Seems like I’ve been having to put in more work than normal this year. I’m happy with how things are going though, we’ve been having a lot of success so far with the calving. I’ve been trying to keep up with Tyler’s videos as it looks like you guys are still getting plenty of moisture. Hope you are doing well!

    when we were raising cattle we would tag the bull calves in the right ear and heifers in the left. made a convenient quick identifier.

    • @LuthiRanchWY
      @LuthiRanchWY  8 месяцев назад

      That’s a great idea! I think I would have a hard time remembering to do it now since I’ve gotten into the habit of tagging them all in the right ear.

    In Illinois all our snow melted and ground is solid frost is mostly gone except for top inch overnight. We feed on crop ground so excess material is tilled in. Great job with videoing loved the frosty morning shots. We almost always use half bag on colostrum. Good calving

    • @LuthiRanchWY
      @LuthiRanchWY  8 месяцев назад

      I think that’s going to start to be my new practice, just using half a bag of colostrum. Unless the calf is really struggling. Is it a little early for your guys snow to melt or is this about normal for you?

    You are definitely putting some miles on that calf warmer this year! Glad to see that other calf responded well to those splints. Looks like winter is resuming it's course after the extended thaw.

      That warmer is probably the best calving tool investment I have ever made. That warm weather sure made a mess of things there for a bit. We got a decent amount of snow last week when those storms came through. I bet over a foot in all. Hope you guys are doing great and enjoying your beef!

    Glad the calves are popping out n doing good.have u tried to run a disk or chisel thru your bedding area in the spring or summer sometimes u can do that and have a great pasture again.its been the mildest Feb I can remember here this week we will be in the high 70 lower 80 for a few days n 60 fir the high the rest of the week please stay warm n u are doing a great job

      @LuthiRanchWY  8 месяцев назад

      Haha it’s crazy to even think about mowing a lawn right now. I bet we have over 2 feet of snow right now on the ground. Temps have still been pretty mild though. With running your disk or chisel through the bedding would it ball up on you a lot? What would you say your average temperatures for this time of year are there?

    • @raymooney6506
      @raymooney6506 8 месяцев назад

      @LuthiRanchWY we are way above the average February temps usually colder in February my disk is a heavy offset n it has scrapers to fight plugging
      It helps chop it n mixes soil in it what town do u live by I want to put it in my weather watch I think u said afton on one video
      Anyway keep up the excellent job u are doing n stay warm

      Haha it’s a song they sing on one of the kid shows Ellis likes. I was able to catch Lyndsey singing it haha. That’s crazy to hear about your temperature swings you have down there. We’ve gotten alot of snow over the last week, probably around another foot. Hope you and your family are doing great!
