Let’s go back to the time of 2006 when gears 1 first launched. I was one of the first 100 people to get the seriously achievement. Kill 1000 people on multiplayer online mode. Microsoft and epic actually sent me a shirt for being one of the first 100 people to get that achievement. Still have it today.
The chief problem with the Gears franchise is the weight of its serialization. Put frankly, the new titles are nothing more than glorified fan-fiction, and it shows in its execution.
Perez gears 3 was the apex of a complete experience with post launch content. I'll even give judgment good game with sections where they had flawed attempt to innovate. But 5 is just a patched gears 4 with prettier graphics and a cool concept with jack but everything else is shit.
Bullet sponges(especially on insane difficulty),19 pride banners ( one would have sufficed), red screen health indicator blinds the player, extreme grind in Multiplayer. Horde still has less variety than it's iteration in Gears of war 3 and the „swarm“ still isn't as fun to fight as the „locust“ from the original trilogy (sound design and appearance)

Errrrmmm not quite correct. The Soviets did intentionally employ women in some frontline combat roles (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Night_Witches). Others got involved in direct combat with Axis forces through chance and then there are the thousands in frontline combat as part of the partisan forces.

I watched the whole way through and enjoyed listening to your perspective as a first-time Gears player. I'm a long time fan of the series so I had different expectations of Gears 5, but I agree with you that it disappoints in many areas. I'm especially glad that you dislike how the microtransactions have been handled - just about everyone on the Gears subreddit hates them too, myself included! Good video!
Thanks for saying that. I was trying to be mindful and transparent about the fact that I was a newcomer to the series. On one hand I had to call it how I see it, but at the same time remember that I was wading into the middle of a franchise that people have known and loved for years. At the end of the day, all I could really do was tell people where I was coming from, and say what I honestly thought. Its good to hear people are kicking up a stink on the reddit. The less people complain, the faster games become infested with microtransactions. Its only because of complaint that now "not having microtransactions" has become a selling feature. We cant win every battle, but I think we might at least carve out a bit of territory of the gaming world which is free of microtransactions and pedocaches. That has to count for something. I'm a bit of a gears of war lore buff and fun fact, the reason why the lancer has a chainsaw in the first place is not to rip people in half in fact that's the exact opposite of what it's supposed to be used for, it's actually meant to be used for cutting obstacles in your path that would block you from your objectives... Using the chainsaw to rip people into pieces would make bone super heat and fly in directions at near lethal speeds

You pretty much nailed it. The game is decent, better for thise who are already balls deep in the Gears of War fandom. The PVP reminds me of oldschool Quake... which I enjoyed immensely in the good old days. But as a casual Gears player, I got embarassed by the hardcore try-hards.

I give the single player a 6. That being said, i enjoy immersion in a video game and just could not quite get there with the poor story and characters among other things. Graphics and the shooting mechanics carry its weight for the most part.
I enjoyed the first three games they were enjoyable the stories are like bad B movies the first three games tied up the story nicely but unfortunately they just kept going with them whit the same gameplay. And they never answered the question why didn't Earth send help ? How come they never try to make contact ? I thought after part 3 they would answer all these questions but they never did. It's like they totally forgot that this game wasn't set on planet Earth and was actually set on a planet in another system.
So, in the history of Gears, human ships were sent off Earth in case of a World War, the ships that were sent crash landed on Sera, due to the crash landing, they had to start almost basically from scratch. So the humans of Sera had to essentially start from scratch, Earth has become a myth and contact has not been reestablished as of Gears 5. A lot of people do not believe Earth exists, and with the Pendulum War and the locust/swarm have been keeping everyone busy and unable to focus on taking to the skies (though not for a lack of trying which can be seen through one section of this game).
I honestly had to do a double take when the credits rolled. I restarted the last mission just to make sure my game didn't glitch and make the real last mission not load.
Buckshot has an effective range out to about 30-35 yards give or take depending on the cartridge and if you use a choke. Slugs out of smooth bore barrels are accurate out to 100 yards. Rifled Barrels with Sabot Slugs +200 yards. As for the American 2nd Amendment, assault rifles and automatic weapons in general are only deployed by the Military and Police. "Assault Weapons" is the current talking point by people looking to strip rights and property from otherwise peaceful citizens. Never addressing the criminal elements that don't buy firearms from a gun store. But often buy weapons, ammunition, and drugs from corrupt law enforcement. Supplied straight from evidence lockers.
Brother you must Active Reload, you get stability and powered up gun. not to mention a faster reload. (reload again when the moving line hits the "sweetspot") if you miss your reload is longer, but the risk reward is worth.
I'm glad you don't downright hate the game. I agree about the BS microtransactions, and pretty much a lot of what you said is true. I love the franchise to death as I have been a long time fan, but thank god you didn't pick up Gears 4 when it released. That was a shitshow with a lot of people. I'm trying to finish my 4th run of Code Vein this morning (for 100 percent achievements), then I'm going to try and finish Greedfall before Frostpunk comes out on Friday. That's one game I've been meaning to play for awhile, and now I have no excuse. Gears 5 I had started playing, but I only got a few chapters into the story before moving on. I think I'm just not a Gears fan. I tried to play 1, 4, and now 5, and I never get past the first few chapters. Something about Gears just feels sluggish and clunky to me.
The thing I like about this channel the most is that 21 never says that a game is 100% awesome or 100% bad. He gives you the full scope of positive and negative and is totally fair. And he never says you should not buy the game or that there is something wrong with you if you personally enjoy the game. Because of this excellent journalism I have been able to make better gaming purchasing decisions over the past year, as well as being made aware of really good lesser known games that I might otherwise never knew existed. This channel is a true consumer advocate and it's awesome. Plus I love the word "fuckery".
Great Review. Sums up my thoughts perfectly. I last played GOW back on the 360. It hadn't really changed much. The semi open world was needless, I started doing the optional quests but quickly realised they were pointless and just ploughed through. I feel like the lore and backstory deserves a mass effect style RPG with a deeper explanation of the different races and their motives. Pretty dissapointing really, glad I got it on game pass and didnt "pay" outright.
Thats some interesting points. Perhaps the game would benefit from really pursuing one goal well... like focusing more on the RPG and lore side. Certainly that random open world section was a bit farcical and just ate up development budget for no justifiable reason imho. Thanks for watching fella.

Another great review. I got Gears 4 from somewhere in the Windows store thingy and I could barely play more than a few levels. If you look at the gun and camera, they feel meaty, good. But then you notice the enemy is laughing at the plinker you are shooting and it all falls apart. Add to that mediocre story, hear your review of 5 and it seems they have managed to serialize that mediocre formula to a T... Thanks again for the great review, keep that toxicity up, it's priceless.
This had the feel of Gears Judgement, which I didn't like. The choice you make near the ending, which I won't talk about, felt dumb and just came off as "this is how we'll drag out the series more". These microtransactions don't bother me as much as they should like the Battlefront 2 pay to win mechanics before EA got shitblasted, but Epiccent not caring shows how far removed they are
Oh nice, a review that doesn't praise this game after pointing out flaws more often than praise. The score weighting on some of the reviews for this game are so skewed it makes me wonder if they suck at reviewing or just editing videos to make their point. I've seen one channel (Hint: DING!) where he spent 8 minutes of his 10 minute review complaining and then somehow said the game was great fun and worth a purchase at full price. Sorry, but that doesn't sound like a game worth a purchase at full price!

Yet another 1st class video! I really should wait for your reviews on a game, you seem to pick my pain points perfectly. I bought the game, played a bit and haven't returned, not to sure why. Key binding is uncomfortable, and my character also feels laggy or drunk, but that could be my settings. Personally I do not mind micro transactions that are optional and NOT pay-to-win. I also don't mind XP boosters as long as the game is fun to play. When they design painful grinding in, then XP boosters are total bullshit. My friend doesn't have a lot of time to play but he does have a lot(ish) of money so XP boosters helps him advance. I play without boosters and am happy as long as the game is fun
Im exactly like you, would only be interested in the single player, which looks good, but is not fleshed out enough to warrant the price. So will wait until this is on sale. Which is basically the formula i follow for most games.

I’ve been playing the Gears 5 campaign only because it’s on Game Pass. I can’t shake the feeling that it’s designed like a theme park dark ride. Walk a little & listen to some “witty” dialog (follow the ride track) & then stop briefly for a battle (show scene).
They've change the drop rate on the cache keys in the division 2, used to be able to grind them out no problem and I guess for Ubisoft soft that was a problem so I'm done with the division 2 for a while. But I'll still watch your videos for shits and giggles, keep up the great work man love you videos.
Thank you Danny. Im hearing the drop rate is down to about 10% from 50% .... although the individual results vary hugely.. I have one mate who is getting about 30% and another mate who has had ZERO drops so far and he pounded the game for apparel caches. I think they have just about pissed everyone off now.

I am a huge fan of the gears franchise but in terms of gears 4 and 5 it's a bad downhill slope from the original trilogy which was astronomically better in my opinion
i love how you explained escape so fucking perfectly, although the when ya talked about the horde mode and said the vets would "lap it up" actually, we really dont like it, it was a huge downgrade to what gears of war 3 had to offer and was really dumbed down form of the previous games' horde modes
Thank you for pointing that out mate. The Gears veterans like yourself have been incredibly civil considering that I waded in with zero experience of the franchise. A lot of people have commented that they feel Gears 5 is something of a "diminished" version of the game.

I think this game is being generally rated too highly, because its benig released at a time where most TripleA titles are trainwrecks and live service fiascos. Keep in mind that for half the price you can buy games like Frostpunk, Kingdom Come Deliverance, Breathedge and Deap Rock Galactic. Gears 5 is a generic sequel, where they have rolled back on some of the production values to save money, and increased monetization. I think 4/10 is actually fair.
Glad to hear you played Jagged Alliance. I thought it was a title that was wiped from gaming's collective memory. JA2 (modded) may very well be my favorite tactical game of all time, warts and all. I still start up new campaigns once a year or so. Unfortunately, the few attempts to revive the franchise that I've heard about over the years all seem like piles of fuck. Speaking of fucks, I have none to give for Gears, but this was an excellent watch nonetheless.

4/10 for a woke game? Dude that’s very generous. There’s nothing wrong with a female protagonist but having one in a gears game feels like seeing mother Teresa in a whore house, something is off here. And as a person strongly against ANY political elements in video games I didn’t like seeing the LGBTQ flags in the customisation section of this game. Expressing sexuality to randoms is of zero importance in video games. All this wouldn’t have bothered me as much if the Coalition made a near perfect game but they’ve crammed it full of restrictions and micro transactions, gender politics is just the icing on the cake. Gears used to be a badass, testosterone fuelled action shooter that only used drama if the story demanded it, now they’ve gone all pc and lost their own identity. I’m done with gears they sold out on all possible fronts.

Uh, it looks like you don't have the default keybinds. I'm a Master rank versus player and half of those key prompts didn't look right lol. It'd be a little ridiculous for a keybind mistake or bug to have made your Gears experience that much of a burden
Yeah I use ASDF+backspace. Its fantastic for relaxed hand position and very long gaming sessions. the down side is not using default keybinds is sometimes a shag in poorly optimised games. For the life of me I never managed to figure out how to use the snow skiff without bailing out if I turned left for too long. Im sure if I did some research I could have figured it out, but then again.... why should I have to? this stuff needs to be optimised pre-launch tbh. Thank you for watching Warlord.
@@21Kiloton I'm guessing when you changed some binds it got rid of some other keybinds all together. When you were in the Arcade match in versus it says "key not bound" in the top right corner, normally that key would allow you to purchase weapons with the skulls you're rewarded after getting a kill. Hopefully you can look into it and have a more enjoyable Gears experience. Thanks for the reply.

Let’s go back to the time of 2006 when gears 1 first launched. I was one of the first 100 people to get the seriously achievement. Kill 1000 people on multiplayer online mode. Microsoft and epic actually sent me a shirt for being one of the first 100 people to get that achievement. Still have it today.

Horde still has less variety than it's iteration in Gears of war 3 and the „swarm“ still isn't as fun to fight as the „locust“ from the original trilogy (sound design and appearance)

I'm a long time fan of the series so I had different expectations of Gears 5, but I agree with you that it disappoints in many areas. Thanks for saying that. I was trying to be mindful and transparent about the fact that I was a newcomer to the series. On one hand I had to call it how I see it, but at the same time remember that I was wading into the middle of a franchise that people have known and loved for years. At the end of the day, all I could really do was tell people where I was coming from, and say what I honestly thought.
Its good to hear people are kicking up a stink on the reddit. The less people complain, the faster games become infested with microtransactions. Its only because of complaint that now "not having microtransactions" has become a selling feature.
We cant win every battle, but I think we might at least carve out a bit of territory of the gaming world which is free of microtransactions and pedocaches. That has to count for something.

I'm a bit of a gears of war lore buff and fun fact, the reason why the lancer has a chainsaw in the first place is not to rip people in half in fact that's the exact opposite of what it's supposed to be used for, it's actually meant to be used for cutting obstacles in your path that would block you from your objectives... Using the chainsaw to rip people into pieces would make bone super heat and fly in directions at near lethal speeds

omgnowairly I honestly like the story. It’s not my favourite but it’s not bad
I give the single player a 6. That being said, i enjoy immersion in a video game and just could not quite get there with the poor story and characters among other things. Graphics and the shooting mechanics carry its weight for the most part.
I enjoyed the first three games they were enjoyable the stories are like bad B movies the first three games tied up the story nicely but unfortunately they just kept going with them whit the same gameplay. And they never answered the question why didn't Earth send help ? How come they never try to make contact ? I thought after part 3 they would answer all these questions but they never did. It's like they totally forgot that this game wasn't set on planet Earth and was actually set on a planet in another system.
So, in the history of Gears, human ships were sent off Earth in case of a World War, the ships that were sent crash landed on Sera, due to the crash landing, they had to start almost basically from scratch. So the humans of Sera had to essentially start from scratch, Earth has become a myth and contact has not been reestablished as of Gears 5. A lot of people do not believe Earth exists, and with the Pendulum War and the locust/swarm have been keeping everyone busy and unable to focus on taking to the skies (though not for a lack of trying which can be seen through one section of this game).

I honestly had to do a double take when the credits rolled. I restarted the last mission just to make sure my game didn't glitch and make the real last mission not load.

Gears 5 I had started playing, but I only got a few chapters into the story before moving on. I think I'm just not a Gears fan. I tried to play 1, 4, and now 5, and I never get past the first few chapters. Something about Gears just feels sluggish and clunky to me.

The thing I like about this channel the most is that 21 never says that a game is 100% awesome or 100% bad. He gives you the full scope of positive and negative and is totally fair. And he never says you should not buy the game or that there is something wrong with you if you personally enjoy the game.
Because of this excellent journalism I have been able to make better gaming purchasing decisions over the past year, as well as being made aware of really good lesser known games that I might otherwise never knew existed.

Great Review. Sums up my thoughts perfectly. I last played GOW back on the 360. It hadn't really changed much. The semi open world was needless, I started doing the optional quests but quickly realised they were pointless and just ploughed through. I feel like the lore and backstory deserves a mass effect style RPG with a deeper explanation of the different races and their motives. Pretty dissapointing really, glad I got it on game pass and didnt "pay" outright.
Thats some interesting points. Perhaps the game would benefit from really pursuing one goal well... like focusing more on the RPG and lore side. Certainly that random open world section was a bit farcical and just ate up development budget for no justifiable reason imho.

Another great review. I got Gears 4 from somewhere in the Windows store thingy and I could barely play more than a few levels. If you look at the gun and camera, they feel meaty, good. But then you notice the enemy is laughing at the plinker you are shooting and it all falls apart. Add to that mediocre story, hear your review of 5 and it seems they have managed to serialize that mediocre formula to a T...

I miss Jagged Alliance, I remember Raffi the badass in that game. Way back in the 90's what a great franchise it WAS back then.
This had the feel of Gears Judgement, which I didn't like. The choice you make near the ending, which I won't talk about, felt dumb and just came off as "this is how we'll drag out the series more". These microtransactions don't bother me as much as they should like the Battlefront 2 pay to win mechanics before EA got shitblasted, but Epiccent not caring shows how far removed they are
Oh nice, a review that doesn't praise this game after pointing out flaws more often than praise. The score weighting on some of the reviews for this game are so skewed it makes me wonder if they suck at reviewing or just editing videos to make their point. I've seen one channel (Hint: DING!) where he spent 8 minutes of his 10 minute review complaining and then somehow said the game was great fun and worth a purchase at full price. Sorry, but that doesn't sound like a game worth a purchase at full price!

Yet another 1st class video! I really should wait for your reviews on a game, you seem to pick my pain points perfectly. I bought the game, played a bit and haven't returned, not to sure why. Key binding is uncomfortable, and my character also feels laggy or drunk, but that could be my settings. Personally I do not mind micro transactions that are optional and NOT pay-to-win. I also don't mind XP boosters as long as the game is fun to play. When they design painful grinding in, then XP boosters are total bullshit. My friend doesn't have a lot of time to play but he does have a lot(ish) of money so XP boosters helps him advance. I play without boosters and am happy as long as the game is fun

I’ve been playing the Gears 5 campaign only because it’s on Game Pass. I can’t shake the feeling that it’s designed like a theme park dark ride. Walk a little & listen to some “witty” dialog (follow the ride track) & then stop briefly for a battle (show scene).

They've change the drop rate on the cache keys in the division 2, used to be able to grind them out no problem and I guess for Ubisoft soft that was a problem so I'm done with the division 2 for a while. I have one mate who is getting about 30% and another mate who has had ZERO drops so far and he pounded the game for apparel caches. I think they have just about pissed everyone off now.

I am a huge fan of the gears franchise but in terms of gears 4 and 5 it's a bad downhill slope from the original trilogy which was astronomically better in my opinion
i love how you explained escape so fucking perfectly, although the when ya talked about the horde mode and said the vets would "lap it up" actually, we really dont like it, it was a huge downgrade to what gears of war 3 had to offer and was really dumbed down form of the previous games' horde modes
Thank you for pointing that out mate. The Gears veterans like yourself have been incredibly civil considering that I waded in with zero experience of the franchise. A lot of people have commented that they feel Gears 5 is something of a "diminished" version of the game.
@@21Kiloton It really feels like that, and its sad, i miss the days where i could just play gears 3 horde mode and just lose myself for hours without even noticing because it was so fun. Now its just... well.... brain-dead boring.
4 out of 10? lmao. ok man. Best Gears yet I thought. Horde mode is an absolute blast as well. The story in G5 is up there with games like Tomb Raider. When I say story, I don't just mean story content, it's how it's all executed as well.This is probably the first Gears I didn't say to myself with every new enemy wave - "Here we go again".
Fair play to you Sheep. I did try and reference that the experience of the game would be different for a die hard fan, and it could possibly be a good enough fix if you loved the franchise. Personally Im coming in cold, playing this franchise for the first time and I can only judge it from that perspective. Still, Im glad you are enjoying yourself mate. No diehard fan here. I haven't played MP since the first game. The sticky grenade achievement ruined it. Never even played Gears 3. I guess I should have said best Gears I've played. Cmon dude. 4 isnt realistic. To me it appears you've got an axe to grind.
@@SheepAmongG.O.A.T Honestly no. I was completely transparent about my motivations and opinions in the video. I think this game is being generally rated too highly, because its benig released at a time where most TripleA titles are trainwrecks and live service fiascos.
Keep in mind that for half the price you can buy games like Frostpunk, Kingdom Come Deliverance, Breathedge and Deap Rock Galactic. Gears 5 is a generic sequel, where they have rolled back on some of the production values to save money, and increased monetization. I think 4/10 is actually fair.
Glad to hear you played Jagged Alliance. I thought it was a title that was wiped from gaming's collective memory. JA2 (modded) may very well be my favorite tactical game of all time, warts and all. I still start up new campaigns once a year or so. Unfortunately, the few attempts to revive the franchise that I've heard about over the years all seem like piles of fuck. Speaking of fucks, I have none to give for Gears, but this was an excellent watch nonetheless.
I might even dig one of the Jagged Alliance games out at some point. Just got one of the newer Breach and Clears which is worth a spin too. gld you enjoyed the vid btw Commander
QUESTION : If anyone has bought this - i'd be curious to know if the always online can be disabled in the settings on the console version - as I recall there was an issue with some games that could be corrected by changing a setting to ""Local".
As far as I know there's no way to turn it off.

4/10 for a woke game? Dude that’s very generous. There’s nothing wrong with a female protagonist but having one in a gears game feels like seeing mother Teresa in a whore house, something is off here. And as a person strongly against ANY political elements in video games I didn’t like seeing the LGBTQ flags in the customisation section of this game. Expressing sexuality to randoms is of zero importance in video games. All this wouldn’t have bothered me as much if the Coalition made a near perfect game but they’ve crammed it full of restrictions and micro transactions, gender politics is just the icing on the cake. Gears used to be a badass, testosterone fuelled action shooter that only used drama if the story demanded it, now they’ve gone all pc and lost their own identity. I’m done with gears they sold out on all possible fronts.

I'd say the multiplayer is pretty crispy and more refined then 4 and 3.

Uh, it looks like you don't have the default keybinds. I'm a Master rank versus player and half of those key prompts didn't look right lol. It'd be a little ridiculous for a keybind mistake or bug to have made your Gears experience that much of a burden
Yeah I use ASDF+backspace. Its fantastic for relaxed hand position and very long gaming sessions. the down side is not using default keybinds is sometimes a shag in poorly optimised games.
For the life of me I never managed to figure out how to use the snow skiff without bailing out if I turned left for too long. Im sure if I did some research I could have figured it out, but then again.... why should I have to? this stuff needs to be optimised pre-launch tbh. Thank you for watching Warlord.
@@21Kiloton I'm guessing when you changed some binds it got rid of some other keybinds all together. When you were in the Arcade match in versus it says "key not bound" in the top right corner, normally that key would allow you to purchase weapons with the skulls you're rewarded after getting a kill. Hopefully you can look into it and have a more enjoyable Gears experience. Thanks for the reply.

Been playing it today mate, and started the review. Lets just say that it started out promising .... and was all downhill after that .....
@@21Kiloton i felt the same. you can see that they wanted to release it as fast as possible and making the most money they can get! even the live-action trailer (whats awkward for a game) did cost more than the developement of that game! do you remember the very first trailers? they were great! why didnt they show the enemies droppin colorful weapons and icons all over the screen? because they knew that this is shit!!! i loved the older GR games and thats awful what ubisoft is doing now...
