    Ah, the good ol' days. Back when the weather channel could make it more than 4 minutes without a commercial break, 24 hours without showing 10 reruns of 'Storm Stories,' and they didn't name major blizzards after clownfish from Pixar movies.

    I was a senior in high school in 1996. The Blizzard of 1996 cancelled school for the entire week forcing the school system to cancel mid-terms exam that we studying for the week before the blizzard hit. The theme for our yearbook that year was "Braving the Elements"

    I remember the Blizzard of 1996 very well! When I opened our front door I was greeted by a two foot wall of snow! It took my brother and I literally the whole day to dig us out. We piled snow so high next to one of our trees that it reached the top branches.

    Hell of a storm. I lived in Central NJ when that happened. The 93 storm had way worse wind, but this one was a snow nightmare. Where we were, we got like 3 feet of snow with 6 foot drifts. Between my dad and me, we had to go out every hour to clear the driveway. By the time we were done clearing it, there was an inch or two where we started. Absolutely incredible.

    I remember this...very well. I believe we had 33 inches of snow where I was in southeast PA (northwest of Phila.). I was 25 then, and I remember not being able to get in the front door to my wife and I's apartment. The snow drifts were even higher! I still have pictures of our cars buried under the snow. Moved to southeast GA just a few months after, but I still miss the Philadelphia area, especially WPVI Channel 6 Action News with Jim Gardner! Grew up watching him, Marc Howard, (the late) Jim O'Brien, Rob Jennings, Lisa Thomas-Laurie, Chris Wagner, Dave Roberts, (the late) Gary Papa, Don Tollefson...the list of talent from the Action News team is endless!

    Here in Philly the meteorologists kept changing the snow totals from 10-18 inches before the storm started to at least 30 before the storm ended. Shows you how unpredictable the weather is and how wrong the computer forecast can be, even today.

  • @SPRPhilly
    @SPRPhilly 8 лет назад +1

    33 inches where I was in Maple Shade, NJ. I lived in an apartment complex and because of the way the wind was whipping around the buildings, my truck was completely clear of any snow after the storm, but the parking lot was blocked off by 5 or 6 foot drifts so I couldn't go anywhere anyway.

    I like how Bruce mentions some moderate to heavy snows in Northern New Jersey. I live in North-Central New Jersey. I think my school was canceled that Monday, but re-opened on Tuesday. I miss those days when I would watch TWC during winter to see if any winter storm would be significant enough to close school. Sometimes, it would and I would be happy. Other times, not so much, though occasionally there were delayed openings for minor winter storms. Good old days. Sigh...

    so I moved from New Orleans (average snowfall...once about every 7-8 yrs) to Philly in June 95, the blizzard hits and I'm living in an apartment. Well I was so fascinated by the storm that I kept leaving and driving around in it filming on my camcorder. My girlfriend kept telling me "their saying to stay indoors". Well since I kept moving my truck, by the time I was done for the evening, I parked in one of the clear parking spots the plow had cleared. So the next morning all of my neighbors were wondering why I didn't have 3 feet of snow to dig out. LOL silly Yankees.
