We sang this in my Christian school and Sunday school growing up. Today I look for a video of it after learning that my 7 year old grandson was talking about Jesus with his classmate when the teacher told them that Jesus doesn’t exist and there are many gods. She then told them to stop talking about Jesus in school. His response was that his teacher is confused and doesn’t have Jesus in her heart so she doesn’t know better. I’m so proud of my grandson and his friend for shining brightly for Jesus at school! I then began singing and want to sing this at church to inspire all of our children at church, “Stand up, Stand up for Jesus, ye soldiers of the cross!” Thank you for the history

Thank you, Brother, for this another timeless hymn! The Lord has definitely blessed you with a great gift for His Kingdom! I really enjoy your brief sermonettes,- brief and powerful! Didn’t Shakespear say that “brevity is a soul of wisdom “?
May The Lord continue to bless your ministry for as long as you live in the service for Him!
You have blessed my soul again and again, - every one of your presentations is a masterpiece!

Though we sang the verses slightly different being Churches of Christ & not Presbyterians. Which often happens in our country.

I cannot hear or sing this song without recalling the powerful appeals to come to the Lord for salvation given by the late God-blessed worldwide Seventh-day Adventist Evangelist Elder E.E.Cleveland. He obviously thought the theology to be perfect. Very many hurried to the altar as the congregation sang this song with reverent fervor and he spoke the words of the chorus as if singing them. I think it's a Holy Spirit inspired song, a mini message on its own. If the people who criticize it instead take heed to this greatest of life's invitations, they would truly be blessed above their espectations in this world and in the next if they are faithful. The impact of this hymn is ETERNAL.Thank you for sharing it!

I knew this hymn from school assembly long before I became a Christian (our family didn't do church). It's not in our modern hymnbooks, but I like it anyway. The whole point is this world is a spiritual battleground, if you're a Christian the attacks will come fast and often. They're usually worldly temptations, sometimes the bad behaviour and cruelty of other people, but the real enemy is the one whispering sweet nothings into your ear, the temptation to get your own revenge etc. If you think it's a playground or you're not being attacked, then chances are you're doing it wrong.

Thankyou for the story behind this very old hymn. It was only in the last week when I was listening to a podcast of my pastor on the Trinity that the first line of the hymn came back to me. I do recall the tune being a bit of a dirge. I googled for the rest of the lyrics. What a very beautiful poem/hymn. Your singing of the hymn was uplifting and worshipful. (😂not at all “dirgy” )
Your singing is gifted. I look forward to hearing more.

This is my song, the theme of my life. Am 37 this year 2024, i fell in love with the song in the early 1990’s when my mother used to take me with her to an Anglican Church and allow me to sit with her in the adult church instead of sunday school. I just loved the adult church bse of hymns and stand up stand up for Jesus was my very favourite. Almost 30 years later, it still is and i plan to walk down the isle with this hymn. I have alot of stories with this very hymn but already this comment is too long. Thank you for this segment, its blessed me immensely.

I went to emission boarding school in zambia and this is where we sang this him every Sunday. It was a rallying call to fight for our Christian belief. It never alluded to physical fighting, but spiritual battles that we would have each day. I still listen to it, more than 30 years after I went to school because when I am feeling discouraged or feeling downtrodden, it helps me spiritually to lift up my spirit. We are involved in a battle against evil, every single day and against all forms of human depravity. This song allows Christians to find O’Reilly in call to spirituality each day at least

Think we only ever sang four, but they could've only picked the four ... don't have one of our old hymnals, but do have one from about 1976....yup!--- it's a twenty-second printing done in 1975........let me look....with four verses by George Duffield, 1818-1888 and George J. I'm 59 going on 60 and am very familiar with this wonderful and inspiring hymn. "Onward, Christian Soldiers" is another great one. It's really sad that nowadays some people actually believe these hymns promote violence. Wow, we're living in seriously delusional times. Ever since the time of Adam & Eve, the world has been in a state of decay. But a careful observance of history will show that starting around the mid-17th Century and continuing into most of the 18th Century, the decay really accelerated. That's when liberal theology seeped into the Church and society as a whole. Notice how the following movements began during that period: Seventh Day Adventism, and its lesser known cousin, First Day Adventism (both of which had their genesis in the Millerism); the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society (better known as Jehovah's Witnesses), Mormonism, Christian Science; even the Theory of Evolution!
