Tyler Joseph (lead singer) writes all their songs this song is about the music making process and how it is like chlorine where it cleanses Tyler, but also can overwhelm him and become toxic they took a 3 year hiatus between Blurryface and Trench when they really went to stardom, so the chorus refers to that "when i leave don't save my seat, i'll be back when it's all complete, the moment is medical" the creature is Ned - he represents Tyler's creativity - this was the first introduction to him, so you can see he's not ready to go into the water until he thinks it's perfectly ready
Chlorine is cleansing in small doses but too much and it becomes toxic. That’s how Tyler feels about his song writing process. Writing music is often therapeutic but always tapping into these deep places that often times are pretty dark it can be toxic to him mentally too. I also love the line “now you double as a paper maker” Music isn’t just a therapy anymore it’s now become his income and that aspect adds to it being overwhelming
I'm 50 this year, and I actually been screaming several years now : These guys are musical gods. Lmao. True story. Hugs from Sweden again and ty for reaction.
I’m 55 and my daughter and I are going to see them this summer In Pittsburgh, it will be our 10th time. Their concerts have been the best days of my life spent with my daughter. I’m very lucky she still loves taking me along!😆
Hey old guys. I'm 42 & have been on a TØP run for the last 4 years. No Phun Intended was Tyler's first solo attempt at an album. Self titled was amazing. Regional At Best was amazing, vessel was amazing, blurryface was amazing, trench was complete. You just cannot go wrong with anything by them. He's self taught all the instruments he's played. He's really I think a musical genius.
Fun fact about this song: Ned, the little white alien, is a representation of Tyler's (the lead singer) creativity. The chlorine he is referring to is music in general, and in small doses is good for you, but in large quantities can be poisonous. Ned's horns grow when he jumps into the pool, because Tyler's creativity is unbound and free to grow. Its absolutely great visuals, and great lyrics as always. Just wanted to give you a bit of insight.
I love your discussion of how a band with several members would come up with a sound. The fact that TOP is just 2 guys and that Tyler not only writes all their stuff and produces their beats says a lot about his creativity. Josh, the drummer, is a part of the creative process for sure, but is flexible enough to go any direction with Tyler. Unique, for sure!
Tyler has listened to all kinds of music, he likes the Killers, Muse, etc. Tyler started playing a keyboard when he was a kid. As a teenager he was already making music, as an outlet for his mental health issues, depression, anxiety. The first records were done in his parents basement. He had a solo career at first. The band started 2009, with two of his friends. The friends left 2011, he was alone for a moment. However, he had met Josh through the other former band member, so they had known for some time. Tyler asked him to play drums on a gig and Josh quit his day job.
There are just 2 of them : Josh -drums, Tyler - singer, songwriter, beats, music instruments (base, ukulele, piano...), production (without label help) , etc About video: The song’s about their music and how it’s like chlorine. Chlorine, in small doses, cleans water and can even be healthy for you. Chlorine can be essential for survival in certain situation because it’s so good at cleaning water; however, the chemical is also poisonous and can kill you if you ingest too much. He is saying that his music is the same way to him. He needs it to survive (it’s a moneymaker and also saves him psychologically and emotionally), but it can overtake him and kill him. “This beat is a chemical”. Without it, he would die. But too much of it can also kill and destroy him. Ned (this funny creature) represents Tyler's (singer) creativity. And they start filling up the pool, but Ned is not satisfied until it is completely filled with chlorine (until song is close to perfect for Tyler ).
The reason for their unique sound may lie in the fact that both of them grew up in strict households and in childhood were exposed only to religious music. Much later than usual they met different genres. Later, Josh had to hide the Green Day album under the bed because of his strict parents. I think that's why they are so original
55 here, loved so much music over the years.. my last favorite band was linkin park ( R.I.P. Chester ) my regret was never seeing them live. I’m not going to let that happen with twenty one pilots. Ordered my tickets for a concert this year. I’m so excited. Everything I’ve read and seen from videos is they put on the absolutely best live show .. more please 😬🎶
To add to the comments about how they write, Tyler has commented on how he knew little about how music should be written. He started playing g around with sounds on a small electric keyboard and just did what he liked. They have no direct inspiration from particular bands but more from random songs all over. Josh was self taught from listening to music recommended by random people& playing along on a drum set in a music store. They were self taught with no boundaries, no rules & just a love for creating. I think this is what gives them their unique sound & is so refreshing in a day and age where ever I’d influenced by someone. You won’t get a bad song. Also I’d love to see you check out Palaye Royale also. They are huge fans of TØP & influenced by MCR and a whole range of old rock, punk & a bit of 60s 70s pop. Another awesome unique sounding band
Awesome reaction guys! Love watching you. My interpretation of the song: chlorine is the inner pain that Tyler (the singer and songwriter) draws from to write his songs. He sips a little but it’s not enough for his fans (Ned the albino baby yoda) so he goes back and drinks more and puts more emotion and pain into the song. The fans like it, but it needs more “chlorine. “ represented by Ned considering diving in to the music. But still not enough. So Tyler goes back and drinks even more. It’s painful for him but it’s what the fans want. It’s also what he makes his living doing (doubles as a paper maker; money) notice Ned (the fans) is hiding behind the car door (from the music video heavy dirt soul, one of their older songs that the fans love.) He is still unwilling to dive into the new songs. But finally it’s enough and Ned dives in. That’s what I think at least. Great job making the parallel to MGMT another underrated band as your friend said. Please do them soon. Do all their hits and then dive deeper. They’re amazing. A deep cut that is incredible is flash delirium off of the congratulations album. Awesome reaction and keep it up!!! Thanks!
Recommendation list in order ( in this order you'll understand concepts of last 2 albums and will be able to see growth of this band): 1st lane : Vessel album - Ode to sleep (music video) - Car radio (music video) + - holding on to you (music video - cuz it's first big video work from TOP) - guns for hands (music video) - migraine (music video or The live room version) - trees (live from fox theater ! - song with one of the biggest meaning for Tyler , he wrote it a looong time ago in high school ) 2nd line : blurryface album - stressed out (music video, huge song that made them so popular right now) + - lane boy (music video) + - ride (live from Fox theater) - hometown (lyrics video) - tear in my heart (music video) - the judge (lyrics video) - fairy local (music video) - message man (lyrics video) - goner (live from fox theatre , ending of the album) - Heavydirtysoul ( music video - this one is the connection to the next album, start of storyline) 3rd line : Trench album - jumpsuit ( music video , connected to hvdrtsl) - nico and the niners (music video, next one in saga) - levitate (music video, next one in saga) - chlorine (music video) + - the hype (BOTH, album and Berlin session versions ) - my blood (music video) - pet cheetah (lyrics video) - morph (lyrics video, a bit of connection to storyline) - Heathens ( music video, spin off, not from any album but have a lot of small connections to story) + - neon gravestones (lyrics video, influence to the story) - legend (lyrics video) - bandito (lyrics video, huge connection in storyline) - leave the city ( lyrics video, ending of era ) 4th line (extra) - TOP x Mutemath session - stripped down storyteller session by Tyler - kitchen sink (live version) - House of gold (live room or official video) - Forest (live Newport music hall ) - fall away (feat dr. Blum) - level of concern (official video) - blasphemy, drown (from Tyler's solo project he made in high school) - taxi cab (live SiriusXM) - cut my lip (lyrics video) - Car radio (captured in The live room) - Friend please (lyrics video) - March to the sea (lyrics video) - Trapdoor (lyrics video) - Isle of flightless birds (lyrics video)
I want to say a couple of things so that you can understand more about the band and make my point that they're a "good band" in every way. The main thing to understand is that they don't offer a product, they offer a service (there is a video from yt that explains it in detail). Their songs can be heard independently, the lyrics of each song have a general meaning and several secondary meanings written in a simple way so that anyone can come up with them. Talking about their musical style is to say that they cover variables of different genres even in the same song that makes this sound unique and their own, but also having the variable many people of different musical tastes can enjoy the rhythms of their songs. It's not necessary to talk about the talent of both, not only in composition, they know how to make music, they know how to use their instruments, they know how to make it sound good both in a song and in a live, the work and effort behind the live acts is remarkable. Now the part of the service where the Clique (fans) enters, when you immerse yourself in their songs it's inevitable that you want to look for more information about them and the meaning, that's where you come across the clique and its theories about each song, but also You come across the albums Blurryface, Trench and very soon SAI, in which each song is connected to the story they are creating (About DEMA), giving each song a third variable in meaning. And they go further, not only albums, not only songs, nor videos are part of the story, they created web pages, games, images, information sites, they talked about real people, they created merchandising that even had a meaning, each advertising, each publication, each performance is connected with it, to the point that there is no way that we do not interact with it, even in a strange way they managed to get into that world and us too. The point is that they met all the requirements to be a "Good Band" not only because of the service but because they love what they do and know how to do it, they love the Clique as much as we love them, they not only created a unique musical style, the fandom is one of the most unique I have been to, suffice it to say that it is not easy to get at least 10,000 people to sing "we're broken people" in chorus, knowing the weight of every little word. Pd: They literally created their own universe of which they are a part and they gave it to us. Who does that?
Ned (the creature) is a physical representation of Tyler’s creativity. And he can’t swim (create) unless he’s in a place of purity and honesty. (But sometimes it can be too much). Sometimes the very thing (honesty, chlorine) can also be toxic.
As far as I know Tyler also creates the treatment for the music videos. They’ve had a few different directors for their videos, but the message is all TOP’s .
because I see a few reaction youtubers fall into this trap with no warning and get a lot of comments after the fact. there's a few songs you might want to do coming up that people just do randomly but have an order to them because they're part of a story and the order goes : Heavy dirty soul, Jumpsuit, nico and the niners and Levitate.
LOVED this! You guys are a hoot. I am so enamored with this band, and I love seeing people fall for them. VERY interesting addition to the chlorine discussion at the end.
If you don’t look into the meaning of the video it’s confusing, and I don’t blame anyone who doesn’t tbh. Just love when people enjoy the song, which when seen LIVE is a moment I’ll never forget.
Very relatable reaction :) If you venture into the Twenty One Pilots world, and it's well worth the journey, you'll see that everything they do musically, lyrically, and visually has meaning. Actually several meanings simultaneously. There isn't anything they do without meaning, a theme that runs throughout their music. And the band is just Tyler Joseph and Drummer Josh Dunn. They write and produce everything themselves. And the name 21 pilots refers to Arthur Miller's play "All My Sons" about a man who knowingly ships faulty engine parts during WWII which results in the deaths of 21 airplane pilots. Decisions come with consequences. Oh, and the little white creature is Ned. He means a lot, too! :)
The amazing thing about this band is that there are only 2 people in the band. The singer plays all the instruments you hear besides the drums. The singer also writes the songs. The sounds that you hear generated by a computer was put together by the singer.
Oh how I wish Tyler (and Josh) could see your deconstructed options and understanding of the song writing and style. The fact that there is no one who sounds like them is so accurate and that’s what us as fans love so much, it touches not only a very special niche in the industry but Tyler’s approach to writing is like no other and manages to do this in such a real raw and relatable way. I’m so proud of them and how far they’ve come already.
Great reaction as always, always enjoy when people react together and hearing them discuss it together. Looking forward to you checking out more of their songs in the future
It's interesting that you said that he's cleaning his insides out the hard way because the last 3 albums have been about how he is fighting against these demons (bishops, Blurryface), and maybe he is sippin on straight chlorine because it helps clean out the demons. He's tried everything else, and maybe straight chlorine is the only thing that works for him.
If you're interested in checking out some of how they got where they are (and what a live Twenty One Pilots show feels like), check out the official video for "ode to sleep". It's a fascinating journey from their beginnings, and you get a great feel for how much work they've put into their music. There are better examples for a live performance, but not that will show their progress over time. Also, as far as the imagery, TøP is VERY deliberate in both their word choices and their images. They take an exceptional amount of care in how they portray things, and there are often little easter eggs in videos referring to specific lyrics from other songs, some of the lore surrounding the story behind the whole Trench album (and other TøP lore). I have no idea what Ned represents beyond Tyler's creativity, but I'm positive that there is a reason he looks the way he does, even if it's never been expressed. Even their clothing in various videos is specifically chosen in regards to color, and it's not just because they like the look.
So true. There is SO MUCH intention that it can be exhausting trying to perceive all of it. But the beautiful thing is that all of that "bonus content" does not need to bee seen/known/heard/understood to enjoy their music. BUT, if you want to "dive in" for more, it is a bottomless pool.
You guys were saying how it's not a stage show but you should see one of their concerts because they are incredible. If you want a taste look up Morph - twenty one pilots live
That little creature is called Ned. Ned represents Tyler's( the singer/songwriter's) creativity. The albums tell a hidden story if you take the time to really dig into the albums, and the songs, you will find the story, and Ned is kind of like a guide. Ned is exclusive to 21 pilots, and not a part of anything else.
I love your reaction vids! Can I suggest maybe Twenty One Pilots new song “Shy Away”? The songs actually about his brother wanting to start releasing music. Btw if you do Tyler’s hair is actually for his daughter Rosie who wore her hair the same way!
Could you react to some Trench songs, like Levitate, Jumpsuit or Nico and the Niners? Those songs are really good! They also just came out with a new album, Scaled and Icy, which you might like! Some of my favorite tracks from that album are Mulberry Street and Formidable.
Do take a look at One Ok Rock, a Japanese Band but does damn good English songs. You can react to 'Renegrade', which is co-written with Ed Sheeren and talking about recent events, racial and corona virus. Another song recommended is 'We are from Ambition Tour'. Hope to see you enjoying it, you won't regret.
my man you should really try to learn about the lore of this band, it's deep and puts a whole new perspective to their songs. You've heard of Blurryface (was mentioned in Stressed Out, from the album titled Blurryface), he's tylers insecurities personafied, and the lore around him and other representations of everything that surrounds mental health in these guys albums are insane. Specifically the albums Blurryface, Trench and now Scaled and Icy in that order. Theres videos on the lore if you want a crash course, I think you'd be mindblown. It even makes more sense seeing their liveshows after learning the lore.
You should do a reaction to Level of Concern = done early quarantine/virus Shy Away = New song from album "Scaled & Icy" Choker = Also a new one that dropped today
I'm so sorry i forgot u Let me catch u up to speed I've tested like the ends of, A weathered flag that's by the sea Can u build my house with? I'm just a chemical
Tyler Joseph (lead singer) writes all their songs
this song is about the music making process and how it is like chlorine where it cleanses Tyler, but also can overwhelm him and become toxic
they took a 3 year hiatus between Blurryface and Trench when they really went to stardom, so the chorus refers to that "when i leave don't save my seat, i'll be back when it's all complete, the moment is medical"
the creature is Ned - he represents Tyler's creativity - this was the first introduction to him, so you can see he's not ready to go into the water until he thinks it's perfectly ready
They took a 1 year hiatus
this is why i love top
I thought that said lead not lead but I was lead to the wrong conclusion
“It’s not a stage show”... and yet, TøP puts on one of the BEST concerts to be found in modern music! 😂
"my creativity's point free when I'm playing shows"
Bro I just saw TOP in Denver for the start of their takeover tour, they fucking crushed it.
Chlorine is cleansing in small doses but too much and it becomes toxic. That’s how Tyler feels about his song writing process. Writing music is often therapeutic but always tapping into these deep places that often times are pretty dark it can be toxic to him mentally too.
I also love the line “now you double as a paper maker”
Music isn’t just a therapy anymore it’s now become his income and that aspect adds to it being overwhelming
I'm 50 this year, and I actually been screaming several years now : These guys are musical gods. Lmao. True story. Hugs from Sweden again and ty for reaction.
Yeah, I'm 52 and I've been a huge fan since Vessel came out. My daughter and I have seen them live 6 times. It's the best music during these times.
No way you are 50!😳
I’m 55 and my daughter and I are going to see them this summer In Pittsburgh, it will be our 10th time. Their concerts have been the best days of my life spent with my daughter. I’m very lucky she still loves taking me along!😆

Actually it's three guys, songwriting and production wise. Tyler, Josh and Paul Meaney.

The Beastie Boys plus Beck was something I've never heard them being compared to before but that's perfect. Makes sense.

This list is awesome!
I want to say a couple of things so that you can understand more about the band and make my point that they're a "good band" in every way. Love the comparison of Beck and the Beastie Boys..
I’d be willing to bet they listened to songs from both
This was an interesting analysis!
And MGMT
As far as I know Tyler also creates the treatment for the music videos. They’ve had a few different directors for their videos, but the message is all TOP’s .
I love the clique and how they explain everything so easy. Love u guys. ❤️❤️
because I see a few reaction youtubers fall into this trap with no warning and get a lot of comments after the fact. there's a few songs you might want to do coming up that people just do randomly but have an order to them because they're part of a story and the order goes :

The little CGI guy is Ned. He represents their creativity, which in their opinion only comes out when the conditions are right.
Your friend is cool, loved hearing his thoughts. Can't wait for more top! Maybe do Jumpsuit next?
more twenty one pilots!
Big ups on the MGMT shoutout you need to react to their stuff
Totally agree!!!
I was just going to say that. Big props to the friend for mentioning them.
If you don’t look into the meaning of the video it’s confusing, and I don’t blame anyone who doesn’t tbh. Just love when people enjoy the song, which when seen LIVE is a moment I’ll never forget.
Agreed! I hope you guys look up a live version. The stage set & graphics are incredible. Ned at his best.
Also, sorry about commenting 3 times in a row: but all of your guests on here are great!
Also also, that's so crazy about the Chlorine facts.
It sounds like hes speaking about alcoholism. Great song either way.
Love and peace.

The amazing thing about this band is that there are only 2 people in the band. The singer plays all the instruments you hear besides the drums. The singer also writes the songs. The sounds that you hear generated by a computer was put together by the singer.
"It's not gonna fly"... flew straight over his head haha
house of gold and tear in my heart are two of the best 21 pilots songs!!
Only band in HISTORY OF MUSIC with two albums certified gold or platinum 2013 "Vessel" and 2015 "Blurryface" NOT ALBUMS EVERY SONG ON EACH ALBUM
Today we are going to listen to twenty one pilots!
(proceeds to wear a queen shirt)
You guys were saying how it's not a stage show but you should see one of their concerts because they are incredible. If you want a taste look up Morph - twenty one pilots live
You probably know this I’m not sure but the band consist’s of only 2 members Tyler (singer,Basist and piano) and Josh who is the drummer
Another current band that you can tell instantly because of their unique sound is Imagine Dragons
Yes! More tøp
Awesome vid like always! I love this song
New band i think you should listen: Linkin Park. Just one the best bands ever!
So glad you made the comparison to MGMT!
I love your reaction vids! Can I suggest maybe Twenty One Pilots new song “Shy Away”? The songs actually about his brother wanting to start releasing music.
Btw if you do Tyler’s hair is actually for his daughter Rosie who wore her hair the same way!
Space buns for Rosie? Omg that makes so much sense!!
MGMT is so good and unique too
Could you react to some Trench songs, like Levitate, Jumpsuit or Nico and the Niners? Those songs are really good! They also just came out with a new album, Scaled and Icy, which you might like! Some of my favorite tracks from that album are Mulberry Street and Formidable.
You just had the chance to meet NED 😍
Do take a look at One Ok Rock, a Japanese Band but does damn good English songs. You can react to 'Renegrade', which is co-written with Ed Sheeren and talking about recent events, racial and corona virus. Another song recommended is 'We are from Ambition Tour'. Hope to see you enjoying it, you won't regret.
Y'all gotta do Fairly Local by TOP, But make sure your friend is with you!!
Here we are all gathering here waiting
my man you should really try to learn about the lore of this band, it's deep and puts a whole new perspective to their songs. It even makes more sense seeing their liveshows after learning the lore.
before it started i said its a beer somewhere
Beastie Boys and Beck I love it and love mgmt one of favorites
Hey guys!! Switch it up and listen to the band killswitch engage and the song End of heartache!! Keep up the great videos!!!
