  • On August 28, 2011, a typical Sunday for the unit, USMC Cpl (Ret.) Jose Armenta, his bomb dog Zenit, and his platoon conducted a security patrol in an area known for being laden with Improvised Explosive Devices. As Jose searched for IEDs with Zenit, he stepped on a pressure plate containing over ten pounds of homemade explosives. "I woke up five days later in Landstuhl, Germany, and realized I had lost both of my legs above the knees." He was then medevac'd to the United States, where he underwent thirteen operations followed by the long process of physical rehabilitation.
The Foundation, along with key corporate sponsors, is proud to honor Jose and the Armenta family with a brand new mortgage-free home built specifically for Jose's needs.
Not only does this home help restore Jose's independence, but it will empower him and his family for all the new life experiences that lie ahead. His home is mortgage-free, contains specially adapted technology, and is custom-made to fit his needs. Please take a moment to welcome Jose and his family in the comments below!
"All of this is really humbling," said Jose. "It makes you feel full of love, full of gratitude that so many people came together to make your dream a reality."
This marks the 89th home we've had the privilege to provide to our nation's most severely wounded heroes and proudly represents the love of our donors, supporters, and grateful Americans like Gary Sinise.
We'd like to give special thanks to our amazing partners: Sunbelt Rentals, The Home Depot Foundation, Simple Green, and American Tire Distributors.
We also want to thank the following partners for dedicating their time, energy, generosity, and resources to the construction of Jose's home: Marcus Foundation, Shubert Design Furniture, Owens Corning. Huber Engineered Woods, Amazon. Benjamin Moore, Installed Building Products, North American Moving Services, Builders FirstSource, Rheem, Louisiana Pacific, Duke Cannon, CabinetWorks, Daltile.Broan, NuTone, Encore, MAPEI, Harris Rebar, MLA General Contractor, National Wood Flooring Association, Natural Stone Institute, National Tile Contractors Association, National Association of Home Builders, and Schulte Roth & Zabel.

Gary Sinise and his Foundation, and to all of those involved in building and furnishing these homes for those that have returned from combat disabled is truly amazing. God bless all of you for taking care of our veterans. This old retired veteran appreciates all that you do.

Thank you Corporal Armenta for your service! And thank you Gary and the foundation for providing a standard for giving back. I am the bar manager at a small taphouse and grille in northern California. The foundation inspired me to give back and I pushed to give free meals for all veterans every Veterans day. To our owner's credit he was happy to do it. This year I personally served free meals to 17 veterans of four different branches from early 20s to late 70s in age. It's a small thing but I know how much it means for veterans to feel loved and appreciated by their neighbors. Lets all do what we can to give back to the service members in our communities and make sure they know how much they are appreciated! 🇺🇲

I learned I had PTSD from the homeless vets in and around Carson City Nevada. I won’t mention the cause. But there’s quite a few of those guys out there. I’m thinking about studio apartment type homes with full kitchens and bathrooms as a possibility.
