My 16 year old Steve has been the best dog that we have ever had and we have loved all of the stages of his life from high energy pup to geriatric ole guy. He is now deaf and almost completely blind with some arthritis. Steve is able to take his 2 mile walk although I occasionally have to carry him. Grooming is a breeze-he likes when we use a lint roller on his coat and even likes when I vacuum his coat. He's a great little guy!

Aww, Steve sounds like a sweet fella! That's great that he is still up for his walks! our 17 year-old border terrier likes to get out, but I usually have to carry him after a block and a half. It's tough as they age, but how lucky we are to have so much time with them! We love that Steve enjoys the lint roller!! Thanks for watching and sharing about your lovely boy.

I rescued a 10 year old Rattie . He was given up because the persons "new boyfriend" didn't want him. So she sent him to a shelter. He was there for 4 days. I saw his picture online and knew he was waiting for me. 8 Months later he is my best lil friend in the world. He loves me and loves life. It took about 2 weeks before he started really trusting me. He was obviously taken care of physically and medically but I do believe due to hand shyness that he was abused. Now he trusts me 100%. Trusts other people. And loves the Dog Park. He may be 10 but he acts like a puppy. No matter how many years i have left with this beautiful dog i am so glad we found eachother. This breed is so sweet, playful, loving and bold and very intelligent !

What a blessing you are to each other. Okay, as for the person who took her 10 year old dog to the shelter...it's better if I don't say the words in my head. Just got a RT. What a dream dog! I’ve had several breeds and I would say without a doubt this one stands out as being exceptional. He is absolutely gorgeous, just the right size- mine is a mini and will probably be about 12 inches at the shoulder. His coat is perfect - no constant trips to the groomers. Their coats are basically trouble free and don’t attract fleas. I love his stand up ears and adorable expression. Very loving. He can have his energy moments(his zoomies) but also appears to be very easy to train I haven’t started that yet but he is very receptive to what I want him to do. He is 4 mos now. The breeder said I would fall in love with him right away and she couldn’t have been more right. The one thing that stood out right away because I do own a little yapper already and he is her companion- it does not appear as if he is going to be a yapper like her. When she starts barking he kind of looks at her like, Really! what’s the issue? I would recommend working with them right away with the nails and the bathing it doesn’t appear as if that’s one of their strong points. They are food driven so that makes him easier to train but more difficult to control around mealtime. My other one is a picky eater just the opposite and he’s got her eating again. They really attach right away, from the beginning he wouldn’t leave me alone he just wanted to be with me.
And yes definitely cuddlers but also plenty of energy for a good walk and a lot of fun.

I have a 10-year-old rattie mix (from the shelter) named D'Artagnan and this was the most accurate description I have seen for him - Jerome's love for them and description especially were spot on. I didn't know what to expect when I got him as a pup (3-4 months) but when I picked him up, he fell asleep in my arms, and I knew he was the one for me.
He's so playful and loves to play tug and fetch, is very food-driven, an absolute snuggle-bug, so loving, very protective and loyal, has a giant personality, and wants to sniff all the things. As one of my friends said, "he's a nasty little freak" (he wants to smell and lick everything, and has been known to get Way Too Personal with people lol). He loves to go on car rides and is convinced that cows are just very big dogs. And, of course, he gets excited by anything outside that moves.
He definitely struggles with anxiety - especially separation anxiety - and over the past couple of years he has been dealing with skin allergies too. I wish I had socialized him and started bathing him and cutting his nails much more regularly when he was young because they're not his strong suits (he loves to roll in mud puddles but will make the biggest ruckus about having a warm bath). He's my baby, though. I have been a dog lover all my life and he's the best dog I've had, flaws and all. I hope he lives for a long time still. Thank you for this lovely video :)

Thanks so much for watching and sharing about your D'Artagnan, he sounds like an amazing little fella! We're so glad you enjoyed this episode. Jerome is such a great ambassador for the breed and has a place in his heart for them. We noticed that when Finlay got older, he started having allergies and Riley became fearful of fireworks and storms. Have you tried CBD for D'Artagnan's anxiety? It may also help with the allergies. We swear by PetReleaf Hemp oil 500 as it cured Riley of her fireworks and thunderstorm anxiety. We can't know for sure if it helped relieve Fin's allergies as we also did acupuncture and TCM for him, but I would give it a try. Oh, and we don't get paid to recommend it, it was a miracle for us since Riley's anxiety was so bad. We don't even have to give it to her for her anxiety anymore!

I adopted a rat terrier chihuahua mix 8 years ago and he has been the sweetest most loyal little friend. He is spunky but loves his quiet time close to us. He also has a wonderful personality. My adult son is currently looking for an emotional support dog and the rat terrier comes up all the time. My son lives in an apartment, but he is active. He wants a mid-sized dog that he can take with him to work and have fun on hikes and at the park. The RT is a little small but so big on personality. I hope he choses to adopt one of these special dogs! Thank you for this wonderful presentation. I just shared the video with my son!

I am turning 60 this year I lost my mother in January we I always had a house with a yard and another dog got divorced a few years ago and we live in a large condo in a wonderful dog loving neighborhood. Guess what I just got my ROCKY (Rocky Raccoon because the first time he laid down on my chest and did a deep sigh. We listened to The Beatles Rocky Raccoon on repeat he loved it. That was his name. He had come with two different 🙈) I have never had a small dog he's a 16 month old challenge in my heart. I always wanted one because I had horses but I've always had bigger dogs and I just took him from someone who rescued him. It was just a bad fit - he lives in Northeast Massachusetts now he comes from Lafayette Louisiana through New Jersey😂. His new little harness is petite small - I didn't want to get him a small because I didn't want to get a complex. Lmao I just want everything to fit correctly and he's a great dog. He loves me. I just have to teach him more and he adores Bebe beagle girl. I'm sure we will have years of love and companionship I hope hope hope! Thank you for sharing your Rocky stories Jerome. For years, I was thinking of names I would name a new dog something completely different, and Rocky was NOT among any of them, but then we listen to Rocky Raccoon by The Beatles and I looked at his face and I was like here you are here we are.❤

Hi Megan, I decided to chime in since my Rat Terrier, Arly, is coming to the end of life. He is a standard, aged 17, and has Degenerative Myelopathy. My experience in a nutshell has been this: Very healthy, athletic, reflexes like a cat, and incredible sense of smell. Arly is very tough, and matter-of-fact...not really cuddly like our Smooth Fox Terrier. He has been a excellent watchdog, hates getting wet, but doesn't really seem to feel the heat. He rarely ever pants...so a true desert dog. He doesn't play well with other male dogs, so never had any buddies. He tolerated them at best. This breed seems to live a long time, and Arly has been no exception. He did begin to lose his hearing at age 12, and then his vision started to go the next year, but we have managed with the little he has left. I never really considered Rat Terriers "true" terriers, like the breeds from the British Isles. To me, they seem as much like a small Spitz breed as a terrier. In the Deep South they are often referred to as "feists". In all honestly, I prefer the temperament of my Smooth Fox Terrier, being more light-hearted and engaging...even mischievous and goofy! Some people may prefer the more grounded, quiet, alert, presence of the Rat Terrier. That said, Rat Terriers would make excellent squirrel dogs, and general hunting dogs, for rural people. They have prey drive, and plenty of energy...but they know when to relax, something my Fox Terrier needs to learn!

    • @DogNerdShow
      @DogNerdShow  3 года назад +1

Hi Joshua - I'm sorry to hear that Arly is having health issues, but wow, what a wonderful long life he has had! Thank you so much for telling us about your experience with the breed. They definitely don't seem quite as active as some terriers and as border terrier people, we would probably consider them to be laid back as you do compared to your Fox terrier. ;) They do seem like such sweethearts and dogs that would excel at agility and any kind of scent work. Thanks for watching and giving us your input, we really appreciate it!

We lost our Rat Terrier Tink 4 weeks ago to cancer at 10yrs old. We got her as a pup from a puppy mill. She was a born hunter with a big appetite, never good around kids or dogs, our other Rats were not like that.
If you ever have to get your pet euthanized , I STRONGLY recommend NOT doing it yourself, get a friend to do it, because you will suffer greatly with the constant visual reminder of it dying. I have to fight the memory, it can be overwhelming if allowed to, I see how dangerous PTSD can be now.

I've had two ratties. Jack was my guy, lived to be 13 yrs old. He was a barker, Mr Barkie Barkerton. He'd bark at the wind just not needing a reason to bark. Then I had Sue who was a rescue from AK who was found by hunters in the winter. I think she was abandoned. She was the sweetest thing on earth unless a cat was present. We didn't know she if she knew how to bark. After 6 weeks with her, we were out in the country when a border collie started to herd our truck barking the whole time. She stood up and started barking something fierce. We about died laughing as it was the sweetest bark. She was protecting us from crazy border collie. I love that rats have an off button. If you want to lay around they will lay around with you. If you want to get up and go, they're ready. Loyal, loving dogs. Raised our Jack with our son and he knew how to treat dogs. Sue loved boys and men and would go right to them. Sue was my husband's girl. She lived for that man. Someone who never bonded with a dog before. After losing both of them, we decided we can't do it again. It's just so hard.

For this show about man’s and woman’s best friends…and especially rat terriers….

They seriously sound like the most amazing little dogs! Thanks so much for watching and for sharing your experience with us! I was just dropping off donations at a local rescue group and a lady there was telling me she needed to start researching smaller breeds that still have energy and are easy to groom. I suggested she check out rat terriers since they are SO beloved by everyone who has them.

We have a Dutch unofficial dogbreed we call Boerenfox, translated farmers fox which is very common. They look identical, their caracter is the same and where also used as farmdogs for ratting and I just love them. They are by far the best dogs you can get. Even the genetics mixes what created them are almost the same. Our first one died in 2021 at almost 15 years old. Even two months before the end he looked like he was going to live forever, fit as a young dog till cancer got the best of him. I will miss him forever.
We have a still healthy 14 year old boerenfox Iceland dog mix and got another one year old boerenfox. If we ever get a new one it will be again a boerenfox. We hardly have ratteriers here but if I would live in the US I know for shure this would be THE breed for me. They are the most funny and inventive dogs you can get. Good for serious action, but at least when it rains they don't mind missing a walk. Stubborn, playfull , go wel with every dog or humans allthough the don't really mind other people. And lets be honest..they are so cute with their spots and very very loving. They are just everything you can hope for in a dog.

Oh, wow, thanks so much for sharing and teaching us about the Boerenfox! They do sound like wonderful dogs and you sound like other rat terrier parents who really love their breed! They do sound pretty perfect. 😉 Thanks so much for watching & sharing. We're so sorry to hear about the loss of your 15 year-old. Our border terriers were the same way until they, too, got cancer. 😢

Ratties are great! Having had four purebred and two rattie mixes over the last 30+ years I have never owned a dog that wasn't at least half rat. Rattie/ Chihuahua and Rattie/ Corgi are both good mixes if the chance of adoption presents itself. I"ve gotten them all under varying circumstances too. First one was an 8wk. old accident mix. Two at 8 weeks being able to see the Mom and Dad, One was 9mo. that I was the third (and forever) dad for, a 3yr. old puppy mill mom and an 11yr. old girl that was two days from her appointment to be put down. They are a hearty breed. Skin problems and rashes seem to be the most prevalent issue I experienced throughout the years, mostly a food allergy and a grass allergy, both controlled inexpensively with Benadryl and just the proper non prescription dog food. With proper care they can easily live to be 16 -17 yrs. (which seems to pass very quickly!!!)

We've heard lots of great things about New Rattitude Rat Terrier Rescue here in GA: newrattitude.org/ You might also check sites like Petfinder.com and Petango.com where lots of rescue groups and animal shelters list adoptable dogs. They let you search by breed, age, and location. Also, check out our latest episode where we give other tips on where to find adoptable pure bred dogs. Best of luck and keep us posted!

    • @DogNerdShow

As a senior pup, we think he has some cognitive and/or vision issues you see in older dogs. Before Finlay passed, he had some pacing and circling issues that we also saw in Franco. And, poor Franco had spinal issues since he was a puppy mill breeder dog and spent his life in a cage...He was so fortunate to be rescued by Jerome and his family.
