Jeff was a gorgeous talent on the ice, he was one of my FAVORITE skaters from this ERA. I wish so much skating could go back to this.

Just love the transition and style that this skater possesses. It is so neat and full of compose. I do have many other favorites, but this guy certainly has a sophisticated skating style that is no match for the other "rough" skaters.

I am pretty sure his coach was not Raf. But I could be wrong I guess.

Why are the announcer surprised with Buttle's scores? It amazes me that Dick Button & Paul Wylie fawned over Joubert and not Buttle. And those are 2 skating personalities that you would think would appreciate a finesse skater. Buttle has skating skills and musical interpretation that blow Joubert out of the water. One quad will not win a championship. What a brave music choice, few could pull this off. Glad Buttle won this year.

officeaddict33 The surprise comes from the massive difference in score that was undeserved. Joubert had one of his best performances ever and better jumps overall (yes he left out a combination but he had the Quad and jumped a lot bigger than Buttle). Their scores should have been very close for those performances. It was the scoring system's overly harsh punishment of Joubert's massive Triple Flips (because of an edge deduction), overly generous reward for doing double jumps in combination, and undervalue of the Quad that created such a wrong score differential.

Office: It was just the hyper-fixation on the quad at that time. I never knew why some people became absolutely hysterical after Evan Lysacek won the 2010 Olympic gold medal with two flawless performances (even without a quad) and defeated Plushenko, who completed a quad in each program but with other problems...when the exact same thing occurred two years earlier at this world championships. People acted like such a phenomenon had never happened before.
Jeffrey Buttle skated the perfect SP and LP of his life here, even with no quad, and absolutely deserved the victory over Joubert, who did two quads but made other errors. He may not have had the consistency of Stojko, but I've always felt that when he put it all together, Buttle was the best singles male skater Canada has yet produced, much more artistic with a better body awareness and line than Browning, Orser and Stojko, and a much more sincere and less affected delivery than Chan, whose artistry always feels forced and muscles through his jumps.

I'm not sure why Paul Wylie was so surprised. Joubert was better than Buttle for the 2 seconds needed to complete the quad. The other 4:28 of Joubert's free skate were second best to the choreographic complexity, superior spins, and jump quality of Buttle's performance. I had no doubt who would prevail while awaiting Buttle's score.

Yes, but Evan is NOT Buttle or Lambiel or Chan or Brown. His skating - edge quality and artistry is not at their level. Evan was clean but not glorious like those mentioned skaters.

At these Worlds, defending champion, Joubert with quads in both his programs lost to Jeffrey Buttle who skated two flawless programs with no quads and yet, no one lost their minds over it. When the exact same situation happened two years later at the 2010 Olympics where Evan Lysacek skated two flawless programs with no quad and defeated Olympic champion, Plushenko with quads, some people had a fit about it. Back then, mathematically you could defeat another skater with just one quad in each program even if you didn't have one. That's not possible now that they're doing 5-6 quads in a LP, but back then it was very doable, and both Buttle and Lysacek deserved their rightful golds.

Joubert skated "bigger" and had a more natural performance quality. Buttle's program had harder choreography but he seemed more focused on the elements, and since he didn't have the Quad, a 6.0-era style of judging may have put him in 2nd.
Joubert got a somewhat screwed by the judging at this competition (Quad not worth enough, Triple Flips overly punished for takeoff edge, "music violation" in SP), but Buttle did deserve to pull ahead overall. Joubert kind of threw it away with the 2Axel+1Toe.

Actually under the 6.0 system it would favor Buttle. Artistry was worth more than technicql. Remember though it is not just the jumpsit is the spins and footwork and skating skills etc. Also, it depends on the quality of the jumps and elements.
