Has anyone been asked "can you still see things, without glasses/contacts?" that is they're asking it as if without seeing aid we're completely blind? I have had to a few times explain that poor eyesight doesn't equal blind, but rather blurry vision.
+ArtisticAsian1014 At the same time, being blind does not equal a person being unable to see anything at all, complete blindness is overall rare. Though those who do have pretty negative stats on their vision without glasses can be labled as blind to an extent if I recall correctly. Then we have double vision (( I suffer from this at times, nerve damage )) which can require prisms to correct if permanent or until your brain creates a new auto correct which could take 3-8 months. So to an extent yes really poor eyesight can label you as blind from a medical standpoint anyways.
DecoyBlackMage Interesting. I've heard of double vision but not much on it. I'm assuming the nerve your talking about is the optic nerve? You do have a point though; extremely poor vision can be labeled as blind to an extent. I guess in my case, I just don't like how the people who have asked me in the past (tone and wording of sentence).
ArtisticAsian1014 Yes and no, I suffer from MS so yes to an extent the optic nerve can be damaged. But in my case I have had scars forming in my cerebellum a couple of times, which has damaged my brains ability to put images together, the brain requires time to create a new setup but generally double vision is not permanent. Eye damage is one thing but we can also gain vision problems if damage happens to the optic nerve or cerebellum, and the results can be quite weird at times.
I guess he's referring to people like me who once they drop their phone without contacts can't find it until they either step on it or put contacts in.
I'm not really blind. I'm almost completely blind though. In my left eye. It's basically useless, and sometimes it just wonders off. Looking at something random. My right eye is looking straight ahead, when my left eye is looking somewhere to the left, right, up at, down, whatever. Some think I'm cross eyed. But are my eyes crossed? No! They're just looking in different directions..
Just got my glasses a few months ago. I can still remember way back then, i thought that the world was seen that way. I thought it's normal to not clearly see objects beyond 5 meters from me. But when i learned about glasses and eventually had one, i can still remember how teary my eyes were as i was then able to clearly see every object and the leaves of the tree and the people passing by. It was my fist time to appreciate how beautiful the world where you can see even the very detail of an object. Right now, i still have it as i write this, and i am grateful as it really helped me in various ways. (Sorry for my English) Cheers to all who has myopia and astigmatism. ♥️
I have barely reached puberty and i already have more than 7.25 degrees in one eye and 6.25 degrees in he other ( and i have astigmatism)( for reference 3 degrees is considered a lot and 4 degrees is considered wayyyyy too high )
I remember the first time I looked at a tree with glasses on and the first time I looked at the moon. I was shocked at the individual leaves i could see, and that the moon was smaller and the craters were visible.
MARS Same. Even harder when you eat popcorn and have to adjust your normal glasses, which are probably behind the 3D ones, WITHOUT getting the 3D glasses dirty.
+Tone Riggz i did laser surgery 7 years ago, since then my vision is perfect. The surgery only takes around 30 seconds on each eye and is not that expensive
+JoyfullJuneBug it cost me almost $7000 AUD. It was worth it, i havn't worn glasses since. Whole world is in constant 4K. People pay more for TV screens, but this is the TV screen i watch the whole world through, and i'll never have to upgrade it again, i think it's a good deal.
I used to think that the people in cartoons and books didn’t have faces until I got my glasses and I was like, “Oh wow these people in the TV shows and picture books have eyes and mouths?! I had no idea!” 😂🤣

When I finally got my glasses, I was near tears because I realized that that was what the world was made up of all around me. I didn't realize that other people saw trees that way all the time and I drew them over and over again for a while. Before glasses, it was silhouettes that I loved. After, it was detail. PS: Does anyone else take their glasses off to eat?
I was supposed to wear glasses around the age of 12, after a year or so I just eventually refused to wear them. Now 26, still don't wear glasses, can drive just fine and last time I went to the eyedoctor my eyesight has improved. Always nice when everyone tells you you need x only to have it turn out you really don't.
I just got my glasses today, I was diagnosed with astigmatism a few days ago. When i put them on i began crying because i had no idea how clear the world is, everything was so fuzzy and undefined and now i can see and especially read! No squinting, no headaches, ahhhhh.
I was so excited when I saw the video and realised that it actually explains what astigmatism is. As a shackled prisoner of this disorder, (way too dramatic, yes) I've had to explain what it is (read : explain how to pronounce it ) , and describe what it "feels" like a countless number of times. This video is probably what I'm gonna show every curious acquaintance from now on! Thank you, Ted-Ed. P.S : Any fellow astigmatism-affected folks out here? Relatable?
But srsly i would do anything to bring back my old vision. I got too much exposure on gadgets and now i use eyeglasses. Better take care your eyes man.
Awh... dude I feel you. I have two gadgets, and I'm scared of just seeing splodges of colour that's moving... I'm really scared of just being able to see everything, but in a blury vision.
As a person who uses glasses, its very nice to know whats going on... And to know what exactly glasses does for you. I have Myopia, and close to astigmatism, as a 15 year old.
Last week, friday, I made an appointment with the optologist because I thought I had myopia. Turns out I do. Left eye: - 0.75. Right eye: - 1.25. Today, just less than an hour ago, I got my glasses. The main difference has been leaves, where there was first colors, there's now precise outlines and I love it. I'm now 13 and it might get worse over time, but so far I'm grateful for science. Thanks!
Best description I've heard for the differences in the 'sightedness' I have astigmatism, and I never really understood what makes it different from the others before Thanks!

The first time I put on my glasses a year ago (at the time), I was like" 'GASP' THERE ARE LEAVES, I SEE DETAILS ON CLOUDS, EVERYTHING LOOKS SO MUCH COOLER!!", until I brought them to school, and I felt so awkward, knowing that I just came to school with FREAKING GLASSES. I got over it :). Oh and I can still see things far away, it's not a bad myopia. I can go to water parks, going to the beach, riding a roller coaster, anything you're not supposed to bring with you.

I remember when at school, classmates used to mock me because of spectacles, calling me nerd and blind) but now when I am wearing contacts, people don't even know that I have eyesight problems)
I have a astigmatism I just got my glasses today and everything now is like I’m looking at it in crystal clear HD or 4K DEFINITION I’ve been living my life all this time staring at the world blurry so happy my glasses have everything clear
Them: "What do you see without your glasses? What do I look like? How many fingers am I holding up? What color is my pen? Is your vision dark or dim without glasses?" Me: Ever had your picture taken in blur or not in focus? Yeah it simply looks like that :)
I have astigmatism and myopia. My glasses are often too thick, that's why when people see me, they'll be shocked on how thick the lenses of my glasses were. I had my eye problems because I'm premature, I was born in 8 months. I'm telling you, its hard to live with these eye problems, lucky for you 20/20 vision peeps.
I've been wondering lately, why is this "bad eyesight condition" so common? I'm short-sighted (myopic) and so is my mom, while my step dad is long-sighted (hyperopic). Nearly all my friends use glasses, I'd say 80% of them, either all the time or just when they need to. And let's not even mention the rest of my family! How did this gene grow into humanity so strongly? Is it even a gene or what happened?
Last year was the best year to get glasses, 2020 vision to go along with 2020 happenings. It was even a time when you might have needed glasses to see what was happening properly.
I have astigmatism and it's complicated because I wake up with barely blurry vision and my eyes get exhausted and my vision gets progressively worse over the next few hours. I'm 32 and I've just been living with it. I wore glasses as a child and just stopped as a teen thinking that I was basically seeing what everyone was seeing. I recently got glasses and felt instant relief. I also can't believe how clear it is it feels like a 3D movie
do animals experience same eye problems as humans do ? why so many people in the world, like 400 million, have bad vision ? why our eyes are so prone to work so bad , while we don't have any deterioration problems with our other senses ? how can you explain bad vision with evolution ? Aren't genes that cause bad vision suppose to disappear and if so why it's still so prevalent ? I wish you could answer these questions too .
@114757710086722053084 but they certainly diminish in number. what I aimed to understand is why eye problems are more common than say, nerve problems that effect touch or nasal problems that greatly reduces your ability to smell. Why our eyes more prone to detoriate 'compared' to our other senses
just found out the answer to this question. the cells in our eyes never regenerate or replicate, contrary to other cells in our bodies. Another example are the cells in our ears which aid hearing. So as we grow older we lose our hearing and vision the most because the cells there start to die and new ones can not be produced.
I am myopic and I was myopic since I was small but I didn't knew that. I thought that humans can see only this much as I can. So during a random eye checkup I couldn't see anything after the first big 🔠. I directly went from no glasses to glasses with -2 power. And god I couldn't believe that how was I able to see so much details. And now after 4 Years I have -5 as my number. Blind AF without glasses like I cannot even see read a book kept 25 cm away. Thank God I have glasses now otherwise life would be very difficult.
My father and my two younger brother's and I all wear glasses. We're all nearsighted. Each one of us at around puberty were all wearing glasses. My mother also wears glasses due to presbyopia. My family embraces our glasses 👓.
When I was really young like 3-7 I had pretty good vision but then as my eye grew my eyes were shaped kind of like a rugby ball so I had to get glasses because I was short sighted. I stopped wearing my glasses because I thought I didn't need them and then next time I went to the optician at 11 my right eye was still short sighted and my left eye was long sighted. They told me I should wear my glasses more often because it could help my vision. So even if you don't feel like you need your glasses on please just wear your glasses once you get them often because it can really help.
I have a story about my glasses, so one day I waken up and put my glasses on,but then I gotten more blurry vision,so I told my mom about it and she scheduled an appointment with the optometrist, and after I finished all the tests I was told that my glasses only needed cleaning
I remember wearing glasses for the first time and seeing all the individual pieces of gravel in the road and all the individual leaves in the trees. something I will never forget.
I learned I had a vision problem pretty early in life, but I only learned I had an astigmatism thanks to baseball. An astigmatism particularly affects your ability to perceive depth, and this normally isn't a problem with chalkboards and papers. But when my error rate in the outfield suddenly and dramatically spiked, yet no change in prescription was observed, I was referred and diagnosed with a pretty bad astigmatism. It was bad enough to warrant laser correction, but visual therapy and corrective lenses ended up working for me (wasn't a great chance it would due to how severe it was). I still can't wear contact lenses, but I swore those things off already. Dry my eyes out way too much and had one collapse and fold over on the highway.
I have astigmatism in my left eye and I am short sighted. Reasons why so many young kids lately need glasses, even when they are born is because we are evolving to not need our eyesight anymore. Long ago we used to live in forests and needed good eyesight to hunt and find things. Now we don’t, we get food right in front of us and no longer need to hunt or do things with good eyesight. But we get glasses because we still want to see.
The 2 questions that people wearing glasses are ALWAYS asked; 1) Can you see without glasses?
2) Can i wear them for a moment?
vasilis tzeve true
Same😂😂
That is SUPER relatable since only me and my best friend wear glasses in a class of 30 people
3) How many fingers am I holding up?
those questions and they ask me to take them off and mkae me count how many fnigers they are holding up some times they dont ask to take them off
i'm watching this lying down sideways... fellow people with glasses will feel my pain

WHERE IS THE MYOPIC SQUAD AT!???
EleWolf GT here!
Here I am 🙋♀️
Well I think I have found the screaming squad..
hiiiii
Here!
Them: "What do you see without your glasses? What do I look like? How many fingers am I holding up? What color is my pen? Is your vision dark or dim without glasses?"
Me: Ever had your picture taken in blur or not in focus? Yeah it simply looks like that :)
"Waiting to reveal a whole new world that's hiding in plain view"
Wow I love it! I'm going to put my glasses on right now
I have astigmatism and myopia. My glasses are often too thick, that's why when people see me, they'll be shocked on how thick the lenses of my glasses were.
I had my eye problems because I'm premature, I was born in 8 months. I'm telling you, its hard to live with these eye problems, lucky for you 20/20 vision peeps.
What a wonderful video, explanation and animation are well done plus the facinating voice of the narrator. Two thumbs up.
Ever have your glasses off for a minute then put them back on and think “Wow, look at all those blades grass!”
You never really know how bad your vision is until you put glasses on
I need glasses and I'm still waiting for them.... oh the pain 😭😭😭
I've never realized how lucky I am to have perfect version
I'm doing a science project on how our eyes work so this is really useful TED-Ed is so awesome!!!!
I learnt this in Science class when we studied optics
What's optics?
Some people have myopia and some have astigmatism, or you are me... that have both... I didn't even knew that was possible...
MandarinCat He explained in the video that yours strain the older you get.. which is why 99% of old people wear glasses
+excessvoltage That's not how evolution works. Bad genes don't just 'disappear'.
So as we grow older we lose our hearing and vision the most because the cells there start to die and new ones can not be produced.
excessvoltage good questions you ate very smart for coming up with these
excessvoltage For the second question genes or tehnology...
whoever wrote this is a visionary. (just following the crowd) :|
Whoever wrote the comment above me is a hipster. :|
i dont really like wearing glasses but im scared of laser eye surgery :(
Contacts are an amazing option :)
Contacts are really easy been using them for 7 years since I was 12
MrCristie1 me too i weard gllasses when i was borned And i am scared too but and when i get in puberty around 16 or 15 i will need to go:(
you shouldn't worry about it, just wait after puberty a while and do it
Borned? huh......
sorry :P
I was JUST asking myself this question the other day. Good timing... almost too good...
It seems appropriate that this is the first TED-ED video I've watched since having laser surgery done!
I'm early quick think of a joke........ The animator's beards...
go
What did I do ?
+David Otoo you made a terrible joke
I cant see properly because I keep playing game at night and its dark. Reminders please dont play game in the dark or you might buy a glasses
They also mess up your eyes :////

+TGS Gaming Videos (TheGamerSwitch) Using glasses every day for a few years might decrease your vision.
+Grega Vrhovnik omg thanks this helps no lie
now I know why my eyes getting bad for no reason
+Alice Buckingham alright
I've been wearing glasses since I was 7 so I don't know how the world looks like without em
I'm just watching this because the guy in the thumbnail was *WOKE* ASF
420 views :)))))))))
I'm short sighted and i've been using glasses for nearly 2 months and my vision is so much better while using them
I love how they try to end every video with a cool thought-provoking sentence.
my gosh the blurriness in the scene of birds was so incredibly acurate
Awesome, I just got my glasses the other day, It's really nice to know what they actually do
I got my glasses yesterday and I was so amazed
I'm farsighted with an astigmatism and prism and I'm getting my first pair of glasses this week
I have amblyopia, strabismus, and am short sighted in one eye and long sighted in the other eye. Thank god for glasses!
This question was always in my head
This really helped me grasp what astigmatism is. Love all your videos btw!
Sending these types of videos to my dad ASAP because he doesn’t believe i can’t see without glasses
Just got my glasses today, went from blurry 360p to 4k resolution this is a revelation.
I apparently have very slight astimatism from an eye test today. I only need glasses for class though to see the board and read and all that jazz
