  • Looking to stir the segment to the next level, Chrysler introduces a plug-in hybrid version of the Pacifica. With up to 33 miles of electric only range and the promise of 32 MPG combined, this new Pacifica PHEV has the potential to be an intriguing new family hauler for America, as long as they can get past the minivan stigma.

    GREAT VIDEO! We have a 2017 Pacifica Hybrid Platinum. 21k miles, 11k of them all electric. Getting about 41 mpg and visiting the gas station once every other month. Hate on minivans all you want, but you can't get the MPG in any other 7-seater. With all the safety tech it's a joy to drive!

    I just bought a minivan, something I never thought I’d do. I got it to use as a car camper. Now everyone borrows it to haul lumber, big screen tvs, estate sale hauls, etc. Now my daughter is buying a Pacifica to use as family vehicle and haul bikes, skis, etc. she has the one that mid and rear has stow & go seating.

      Did the presenter miss that the rear seats are Stow & Go? While you need to remove the center seats, the rear split bench folds flat in 2 sections.

    I am not a fan of minivans, but I acknowledge that their value is in their passenger carrying capabilities. As a whole, styling-wise, I've never liked them until the Honda Odyssey 4th gen came out in mid 2010 when I nearly caved in to purchase one. The new Pacifica came out and I really like it, along with the 5th gen Odyssey. The fact it took anyone so long to manufacture a hybrid minivan that's any good is surprising. Good job Chrysler.

    I've had my Pacifica Hybrid for almost a year now and have never once mistaken the volume knob for the shifter. They are totally different knobs with totally different shapes and feel. Also, unlike the reviewer, I wish there was a way to force it to stay in electric-only mode not gas mode, especially in the winter. I don't want to burn any gas if at all possible. Summer is no problem, it stays in EV mode almost all the time, but winter I wish I could force EV mode for shorter trips.
    Honda 'cabin talk' is a gimmick. Kids in the back have no trouble hearing the driver, probably because it's such a quiet car due to the electric drive.
    There's no CVT in the van! NOT A CVT! In fact there's no transmission at all really, it's a transaxle with embedded electric motors. There's an electric motor and a reduction gear that drive the wheels directly at all times. The gas engine is connected to a second electric motor which can act either as a motor or a generator and through a one-way clutch the gas motor can add torque to the wheels but there's no gearing for it and no CVT. That's what they're calling an "EVT" for marketing purposes but really it's nothing like a CVT or an automatic. The primary electric motor is what drives the wheels. It's an electric car with a gas motor to help out sometimes.
    We currently have almost 2,000km on our current tank of gas which is still above half and which we bought in March. It will be June this week.
    I don't know what the "sluggishness" thing is about, ours is not sluggish, and 50% throttle (to stay in EV mode) is sufficient to merge onto the highway so I disagree about the acceleration complaint. It's a 6,000-odd pound minivan not a Tesla Roadster, perhaps expectations need to be adjusted accordingly.
    Even without a Government subsidy, the gas savings of about $2,000 per year for an average driver alone would pay the cost difference in about three years of ownership. After that it makes owning it much cheap than the gas-only counterpart. Not only do you not need to buy gas every week but brakes won't wear out as quickly thanks to re-gen braking. Also, the rims stay cleaner because less brake dust because less brake use!

      J Patt yeah pretty much. I don’t know miles but we’re getting better than advertised km range depending on driving habits. We routinely get about 60km range in the summer. Advertised was 55km so we’re happy.

    • @wokeupmens
      @wokeupmens 6 лет назад +1

      Mikey B question I'm new to the whole minivan thing and the hybrid thing.
      1. does the van come with two plugs? So if I upgraded my standard120w to a 220w what is the plug already in the car or is that something I have to get before you buy it?
      2. I drive my kids to school in the morning and then go to work total about 8 miles from my house, so does that mean I'll never use gas if I have it fully charged?

  • @TheSeanUhTron
    @TheSeanUhTron 6 лет назад +12

    Technical note: The term "E-CVT" is more of a marketing term.
    When people want to know what kind of transmission a car has, and when talking about Hybrids, it's easier to just say "E-CVT". In reality, the electric motors are the transmission. One electric motor is connected to the engine, the other is connected to the wheels. When car is in extended range mode (The gas engine is running), the engine will drive one motor to generator power, which is sent to the second motor to turn the wheels. Excess power is sent to the battery, or if more power is needed than the engine can supply, it is taken from the battery.
    PS: Both electric motors and the engine are connected to each other through a planetary gear set. But that's too complicated to explain here.

    The Chrysler Pacifica seems like a pretty solid entry in its class. A few weeks ago I went on a mini road trip with a rented Chrysler Pacifica minivan and I wasn't too thrilled when I found out that I had to sit in the third row. Luckily, Chrysler has made the interior very spacious with relatively comfortable seats. Even though I am almost 6 feet tall, I had no complaints during the drive.
    As far as exterior styling goes, I really like the rear styling and the overall sleek looks of the Pacifica, but I wish Chrysler would update the front fascia to look less like the defunct Chrysler 200 and have more of its own unique identity. Nevertheless, the interior looks very upscale and technology forward. As always, from one car reviewer to another, great review, Sofyan! Keep it up!

    1) Kia Sedona
    2) Chrysler Pacifica (maybe the Hybrid)
    3) Honda Odyssey

    This van should be purpose built for car campers. Sort of Pacifica-Westfalia. Ideally it should be possible to park at charger for the night, plug in, and run AC while charging batteries. Sleep on the back of it comfortably. Market for this is huge, expecially when you take in to account insane house/hotel prices.

    Almost have 200k miles on our Odyssey which we bought new and have had ZERO issues outside of routine stuff - AMAZING - I don't believe that is possible with a Chrysler product. Only averaged 23 mpg in our Odyssey (with a very heavy foot). As much as I would love to get a van that can get 32 mpg, for the money, I believe the Odyssey is still a better value and a much better vehicle - hard to argue with results.

  • @skipyoungdahl429
    @skipyoungdahl429 6 лет назад

    After owning two Odysseys I decided to take a chance on the Pacifica. Mainly because I didn't like removing the middle row when we drove to Florida every year. Now I have a flat floor and still keep the middle row buried under the floor. I like all the tech stuff, too and take full advantage of all it has to offer. Acceleration puts the Odyssey to shame as well. We get 24 mpg driving south each year and most of that is at 70+.

    Enjoyed the review. I bought a Town & Country about 8 years ago and liked the van. Chrysler made a good van with nice options as standard in their trim levels. My wife had a problem with blind spots but the van was comfortable to ride in. I would definitely give the Pacifica a look when we look for our next car, but probably not the hybrid. I think it’ll be about 10 years before the hybrid can give you good driving distance on a charge, 33 miles isn’t much of an incentive for me to pay that much more for a hybrid.

    • @mikeybthepilot
      @mikeybthepilot 6 лет назад

      Depends on your driving habits but we went from August 30th last year to December 15th without having to buy gas and we're currently at over half a tank which I bought on March 4th this year. We're getting better than advertised range (about 60km depending) and that more than covers our daily needs. Some days we charge mid-day too which helps. We try and drive on electricity as much as possible and so far it hasn't been much of an issue. Ideally though, yeah drop the gas entirely and put in a big battery.

Has your electric bill gone up substantially since charging the van? I know it’s not my business and I’m okay with that, but if it’s alright how long does it take to get a full charge? Thanks in advance for response.

      Richard Rybarczyk We did get a charger installed and it takes less than two hours to charge. Our hydro bill doesn’t seem to have changed too much, the car uses maybe about as much electricity as a dryer. Our second car is now also electric since we had the charger installed for the Pacifica.

    This is a great proposition, you don't need to consume any gas for city driving. A great application of PHEV. Why do people buy the three row crossover monstrosities when there are vehicles that actually work for 8 passengers?? I mean, unless you're going to tow a camper trailer, it makes no sense.

  • @felixyoutuber

    • @mauriceetal1426
      @mauriceetal1426 4 года назад

      I don't think so, it wouldn't take charge at that point, you could have it start up and it will autoset temperature settings and get you where you need to be when you step back in. It will then be almost charged and still say it's charging and you walk up, unplug it, and walk into a car cooled/heated slightly. I would just wait till you get back in because the engine may be triggered by trying to getting to your settings and not worth it. It cools quick with the ventilated seats.

    Just a guess, but it would seem since its so heavy, you would go through tires very quickly if it was super fast off the line. If it is exploding from a stop, the tread on the tires suffers way more.

Also has way more features than comparably priced Siennas or Odysseys. However, the cargo space, especially behind the 3rd row seats is significantly less than a Sienna, which was a deal breaker for my purposes. Also, long term reliability is an unknown at the point.

    Currently own this and yes the part I have to get aftermarket HID is annoying. The plugin feature great for short distance or daily commute. The acceleration is good for car it weight. It transmission is NOT CVT! Direct driving with dual electric motors. The gasoline engine seem to use lot of gas when it refresh the oil for some reason. They need to make it lane keeping assist and not just lane mitigation. It doesn't actively track and steer for you only nudge you back if you hit the lane. The adaptive cruise control much smoother than my MDX when people cut you off.

    Does it come with hybrid and gas in one package like other hybrids?

    • @markmarkw1919
      @markmarkw1919 6 лет назад

      "Hybrid" MEANS gas and electric. (Or, I suppose, gasoline and LPG, or gasoline and Fuel Cell, etc)

    Heated Rear Seated are just not available on the Pacifica Hybrid Model. As well as no Auto mode for the rear climate control it single zone manual in the rear. Again, if you want those features step up to the gas model.

    DON'T BUY A PACIFICA! If I can save one person from getting stuck with one of these my time is worth it. A warning to prospective buyers: I bought a 2018 Chrysler Pacifica with only 11,500 MI back in May. Since I purchased it the start-stop feature stopped working and the whole car just died at a stop. Got that battery replaced and automatic start stop still didn't work. Then a couple of months later I was driving on the freeway and the car started to stall and I couldn't control it as well. It had a warning alarm going off to service the power steering. I had the car fixed for that and then 2 weeks later I had the SAME problem plus like five other error codes such as service shifter, break not available, service electronic stability control etc. It won't drive.
    All Kia dealerships in my area are always backed up at least a week for service appointments (because they have so many problems)
    Most people don't have rental coverage and if they do they will not give you a rental until your appointment date so you do not have a car for over a week unless you are going to come out of pocket to rent one. I went on Chrysler Pacifica forums and saw all these problems people have with them such as not being able to turn off cruise control AT ALL when they are on the freeway and it even accelerating on its own or the car doing automatic emergency braking on it's own without cause on the freeway jeopardizing people's lives. So many complaints to the NHTSA. I'm considering selling the car now to CarMax and buying a different brand van. What's a shame is someone else is going to be stuck with this potentially unsafe and DEFINITELY unreliable car. I'm outside the California lemon law limits of 18 months or 18,000 miles so I can't go that route. This is just a huge headache! Save yourselves.

    What's actually really fascinating about the Pacifica hybrid is that actually gets better gas mileage in the city! Due to its regenerative braking feature, which harnesses kinetic energy every time the driver hits the brakes, it uses that energy to then recharge! So if you were doing more highway driving that would explain why you were getting around 9 mpg less than what Chrysler says. Good review though!

    I wonder when you say it's slow off the line, I wonder if the acceleration is problematic while getting off the ramp of a highway and merging into that fast moving traffic especially when it's fully loaded with a family's vacation gear. I have the town and country and when it's fully loaded sometimes the acceleration off the ramp is a problem. Seing this review I see several things that are really nice for families although I'd miss the stow and go seats. I would be curious of a review of a mom with 2 or more kids of this vehicle because parents driving their kids around have a different perspective than single people, but you have a great review. I drive my 2 kids around and a minivan is essential for their gear SUV's don't have enough trunk space. And on those days when I'm asked on short notice to drive an entire girl scout troop, the extra seats are essential too. Your review mentioned missing heated middle row seats, those are the seats that kid carseats usually go in so if your kids are that age we don't care about heated seats. and none of the vans have comfortable ways to get in the back seats, kids go back there. when an adult sits back there in ours we tilt down a 3rd row seat and climb in from the trunk!

    Few vehicles can replace vans for ultimate utility on engineered surfaces. CUV's, SUV's truly reveal to those that have owned both what they are giving up with regards the carry of people and things, unless they 'truly' require/desire the mission of an SUV and it's off-road/technical terrain capabilities.

    Hope someday local minivans like Toyota voxy, honda stepwgn, nissan serena, and mitsubishi delica becomes available there. It doesn't pass America's road situation to be exported there. We don't worry about a car being turned over, moose test and others. Alphard, el grand, and even Hi Ace are too good to be missed out by western markets!

    Less a comprehensive review and more a "I dont like this, oh, I like that". Objectively review, less about what tickles you, else every vehicle you don't personally warm to is going to seem like a lemon. I do appreciate how you go into detail, but I fear it overall comes across as too, 'personal'. Unless that's the point of the channel, which in that case is legit.

    I don’t understand why you insist on saying multiple times that a minivan cannot have “sexy or pleasing design cues.. a minivan does not necessarily cater to those “unfortunate enough” to have one or more kids, as you mention. That bias is artificial and not very good on your part. The capability of such a vehicle to fit a multitude of functions ranging from your stereotypical soccer mom to a great weekend mini RV to hauling a sound system for a small band or a plethora of other functions... maybe you inject your bias unconsciously, but try not to pigeonhole a minivan into that old stereotype, they have evolved immensely and perhaps your view of them should also.
