  • In early June 2018, two of the most mischievous orphans in the care of our Nursery, Esampu and Mteto, together with buddy Mundusi, journeyed to our Ithumba Reintegration Unit to begin the next stage of the reintegration process.
Watch the translocation unfold and the joyous welcome they received at their new home.
Read the full story of this successful move at: www.sheldrickw...
Established in 1977, the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (SWT) operates the world’s most successful orphan elephant rescue and rehabilitation program, rescuing and hand-rearing orphaned elephants and other animals that have lost their mothers, all too often as a result of human activity. But we do much more than this. Through our Aerial, Anti-Poaching and Mobile Veterinary Units, we safeguard the natural environment and provide immediate assistance to wild animals in need. We also secure irreplaceable wilderness areas so that animals will always have space to roam and work with local partners and communities to ensure people and wildlife can live alongside one another.

6.1.20 ~ How utterly heartwarming! I found much joy in viewing this & I thank you for uploading it. As a military dependent for the first twenty-two-years of my life, how I would have delighted in such a warm & caring welcome to each new area of the globe that my beloved Dad ended up stationed at. *LOL*

This is magnificent program. Saving elephant babies and then returning them in stages to their wild way of life is nothing short of heroic. I am proud to sponsor an orphan. I recommend it to you all. Thank you for this video it is just the kind of detail I am always wanting to know about, particularly about the reaction of the herds to the arrival of new babies and the way wild elephants interact with the "teenage" orphans under your care.

This graduation video was extra special to watch! My group of friends and I got to see Esampu, Mteto and Mundusi on their last day in the nursery and on then again their first night at Ithumba. we didn’t make it there in time to see the their first mudbath but we have no complaints, the next day Nusu, Gawa and Kama and there moms were waiting outside the stockades and then came to the mudbath again. The crazy wild female was there too but she was well behaved. It was incredibly special to see these three on their first few days at Ithumba. I love the overhead shots of the mudbath.

Amazing. There were over 40+ elephants at the mud bath! I wish that humans treated each other even half as well as elephants treat each other. If you juxtapose the behaviour of how the dependent orphans and wild elephants treat newcomers to their land compared to how certain countries treat immigrants and refugees, you can see who is the more compassionate and loving species. We have so much to learn from these intelligent and compassionate animals. Thanking you for sharing your work, DSWT, you not only give ellies hope, but you might just help a human or two in the process. 🐘❤

Esampu almost looked like she was no longer a naughty girl. I noticed the larger females patting them with their trunks. I hope she settles down and becomes a beautiful and loving Matriarch. Great new for all of us who are her adopted parents. Mteto and Mundusi will also become great in their own ways too; esp. since Esampu taught them all of her bad habits. great news.
