I saw the Chuckle Brothers in a live show in 2000. I didn't really know anything about their background, just that I liked them on Chucklevision. Were they just two chancers who got lucky and landed a gig on children's TV? No. Absolutely, no. They were theatrical professionals. If you think they were good on TV, they were amazing live on stage. They were one of the last remaining acts in traditional variety theatre. They performed with their half-brothers, The Paton Brothers. Incredible show, real good family entertainment. They weren't desperate for work, either. Chucklevision was still going strong, and they gave it 100%. After the show, they signed autographs for over an hour. I won't hear a bad word against them, they were a fantastic act. Paul still does Panto, do go and see him if you get the opportunity. He's a legend.
That comment = along with Kirsten O'Brien's choice of subject - is quite uplifting. Thanks. My age meant that I missed the Chuckle Brothers "boat", and I only ever caught clips while babysitting. I was not sure if "To me. To you." was a worthy entry into the national consciousness, but now I can be genuinely pleased for them. Your first sentence had me wondering where such a lengthy comment would go. I hope that many people get to read such a thoughtful, warmhearted post. Wildly dfferent to the majority of scents left on the RUclips lamppost. 😀👍👍
@JohnPreston888 Yes this is true. I'm the president of the Little Rock, Arkansas chapter of the US Chucklevision Society. We've got 14 million members across the continental United States (and Puerto Rico) or something
I love this ep, for how the tone changes toward the end, with love and respect for the magical works of Oliver Postgate & Smallfilms. A heartfelt sincere tribute from Charlie, of course with Smallfilms greatest creations to deliver that eulogy.
I mean why didn't he point out that the puppet's ear fell off at 21:17 ... Thanks for posting this BTW... I've now got a lot of Charlie Brooker to catch up on.
I remember watching this back when it was first shown almost 15 years ago and I guess I was 21 or so... I'd forgotten a lot of it but I definitely remember the David Liebe Hart section. I also remember finding the Oliver Postgate section boring, at the time but now watching it again it is rather touching.
The bible programme looks genuinely incredible; I.e. not credible by any measure. If that was made as a horror film, it would win plaudits for its eeriness
After looking into David Liebe Hart, I almost came to the conclusion that it was some sort of kitsch mocking program. But delving a bit deeper this guy seem more odd. And I'm putting that politely.

Saw them in 2010, I was 17. Loved it.

@BetterCallJamie HaHa. Perhaps it was translated as a concession so that us Southerners (and people from the U.S.) could understand.😀

@@BarryRerack147 ??...That reply is hilarious or bizarre...thanks...I think 😀
this was such a thoughtful and compassionate exploration of children's TV, great stuff. Thanks to Brooker and co. and the reuploader
"I love playing bounce!"
"Well that's how you got the warts"
XD
The Liam Gallagher jokes will never get old.
Surprisingly astute observations from Kirsten O'Brian. Well said Mrs.
Well of course, she was talking about the genius of chucklevision. Can't go wrong.
As an adult, I too understand it’s genius.
Postgate was the man, but I’m close to Charlie’s age. Firman and Eliot also genius, I’m thinking the Clangers. Respect to you for the shout out!
I laughed so hard at the 'and knife you' bit that it was scary
A lovely tribute to Oliver Postgate.

Wow Charlie discovered David Lieb Hart before Tim and Eric!

25:00 thank you so much Charlie for pointing out something so tender kind and homely that was always under my nose. Your work means a lot to me xx
The music in the lovely Oliver Postgate section is Ghosts Of Things To Come by Clint Mansell & Kronos Quartet from the Requiem for a Dream soundtrack.
A really touching tribute to Oliver Postgate. Well done Charlie. 👍🏻
The line “less parental” whilst Philip Schofield is on the screen has different connotations in 2023…
I wont ever forget oliver postgate
I met Paul Chuckle once at the Great British Panto Awards such a nice guy to say hello too
I remember Johnny Ball Games and I forgive him because he's Johnny Ball. Love this content so thank you I'm subscribed.
That yo gabby gabby clip unearthed some long-forgotten pseudo-memory from the most base dark sweaty recess of my subconscious. That you for that.
"A man with all the easy-going charisma of an RS-232 interface cable floating in a bowl of cold piss."
RS232-interface-lead. A Spitting Image classic.
there are actors out there who were in those costumes...... they walk amongst us
8:50 haha it’s Anna, long before the Luanna podcast
God bless the chuckle brothers. The last of wholesome kids entertainment. (Its 2024 and no allegations yet so...)
I'm pretty sure one of them SA'd me back in 89 but I've repressed the horror. I'll wait until they pass away before selling my story to the press.
1:22 Oh, Hi, Ashens!
Is it really him?
Yeah he had the mask recommissioned so was asked to be in it. I wondered if anyone else had written this yet 😂
God I miss this show.
Two years later: SECOND!
Screenwipe fan as well?? Jolly good!

The footage of Cornelius around 17:00 minutes in is just incredible!
'Leave your ringpiece burning like a hot coin!'

Johnny Ball Games needs bringing back
I NEED to know where that opening music is from.
Argh! What's the name of the electronic band they sample throughout the ep?
Timestamp?
Are you thinking of Aphex Twin (they play Goon Gumpas in this episode)
I think it's Air - Virgin Suicides soundtrack. The song is called Clouds Up

He's definitely off the reservation.
He’s serious lol I’ve personally met him, and he doesn’t break any sort of character lol
What happened to the music?
Johnny's Ball Games, painful, his dancing was great. Angry news guy, Should have put the nosey bonk mask on !
That black puppet with the orange cap is the image and likeness of God? I'm going to tell Richard Dawkins
23:40 Is that sodding Biggins??? 😂
Oh bagpuss takes me back to my childhood in 70s , real shame the kids today have nothing so good.
And at the moment the pie hit his face
Black mirror was born
Dennis Nielsen 😂
6:16 that song and dance routine is a rip off of Gene, Gene Dancing Machine from the Gong Show in the US….
9:15 Scary eye reveal
Muffin the mule will get you arrested and put on a register these days.
Not liking the Lazy Town slander
Hands up who lives in a nightmare world of Dolmio puppets?
Clangers was the absolute tits. 🎉
Where is humble Jimmy Savile?
probably mentioned at 04:22
2:35 oh dear, Philip Schofield isn't as less mucky now
Speak English.
