In case anyone is curious the answer is due to chemistry. The black stuff on the egg is soot, or deposited carbon due to the combustion of air AKA the fire in the candle. Carbon is hydrophobic causing the egg to essentially insulate itself in a bubble as the carbon is pushing away the water molecules.
I wonder if a charcoal wood chips will also do the same when placed in water? Also thanks for sharing your comment. It should the most likes but something about "patience" does instead.
