When it comes to comparing zoom lenses to prime lenses, it's important to consider that they are not on an equal playing field. Despite the optical mismatch, Kasey's video does a great job of highlighting the noticeable differences, making it educational for newcomers to photography. In conclusion, great job, Kasey.
Someone else may have already answered this, but Nikon Z6iii does have linear focus. Look at custom setting f10. It's a different setting on other cameras (f9 on the Z8). Not sure about the Zf. I’m not certain it works with all lenses. You can set the angle.
Haha, that made me smile. I’ve been eying a long, fast prime for a while now, but they are pricey. Might settle for the 600 6.3 at the end, still expensive, but it’s all relative.
Get a macro extension tube for that lens. 12mm, it's tiny. You'll be able to focus on that damsel fly's eyeball. (in 4k crop). Seriously. Great video BTW.
You can fix the Sony muted greens by just moving the white balance adjustments into green and blue, each camera is a bit different so you just have to point it at a sky and some green to see what you think is the best range. All sensors these days pretty much shoot the same darn colours, its just the colour profiles backed into the camera that are different from each manufacturer, but the white balance adjustment is the best way to correct the in-camera colours as much as possible, also gets rid of that yellow hue on the skin by going more green-blue on the hue adjustment.
Nikon HD 240p completely outclasses the Sony! The father-son shot was especially brutal for the Sony. Kasey, you struck gold with the Nikon. If this is what you can achieve "just for fun", without even fully knowing the camera, the sky's the limit!

@@bsc001 If you can only buy one, the biggest reason to get the Z 600 PF over the Z 800 PF is the much smaller size and weight. It's much easier to hike with, will fit inside a standard camera bag, and will even fit in your typical hotel safe. If travel is on your mind, no brainer to go with the Z 600 PF. However, one should not ignore the F 500 PF, and the fact that you can get one in 10/10 condition with a 6 month warranty for about half the price of a Z 600 PF. They are virtually identical optically, similar VR, similar AF speed. I have noticed the F 500 PF AF does tend to get stuck on foregrounds on a Z8/Z9 a lot more than the Z 600 PF, but it is not a dealbreaker. My wife actually prefers the F 500 PF over the Z 600 PF, because its easier to track moving subjects with the wider view.
Perhaps there’s a TC-1.4 in your future? 840mm at a relatively small additional cost that comes very close to the sharpness of the 800mm f/6.3 prime might be the way to go. Yeah, you lose a stop but you keep the weight and expense way down.
I have looked at it to, but a much better solution, of course much bigger cash-splash, would be the 24-120 f4 as a general travel Lense, and the 100-400 4.5-5.6 as the telephoto zoom. Significantly better than the 28-400.
The image quality in video between these 2 systems is not different only because of the glass you are using. You forget that the more megapixels in the nikon sensor will give you better (sharper) video when it downsamples from 6k when sony is only using 12mp at best. That nikon setup looks sick.
No, imho, not. It is very handy having that top display on these bodies. A lot of peeps try to keep the viewfinder and main display clutter-free, as such, it is good to have this small info display on the top. It does have all the important settings there.
@@bsc001 For shooting wildlife that would require you remove your eye from the EVF. I would trade the top screen for dedicated tactile button all day. Personally the top screen would be better IMO if it could show histogram data as an option similar to GFX. Then I'd be tempted to keep it. But Nikons screen customization allows you to have the exposure triangle settings displayed in a neat manner at bottom of the screen so I don't really see the value unless you're shooting landscapes on a tripod.
Not that i own a Z6 but i do own a D610 yeah old, but im sure the Nikon will have a spare button you could program to enable the functions you need so bad.
Casey, this is a bad video. You are making me want to buy a Nikon 600PF and z8 even though I have A1+200-600. Can you compare 200-600 on A1(Camera Canada will lend you one) vs 600PF or did you already sell the 200-600? I tried Sony 300 F2.8 with x2.0, its lighter than 200-600 and sharper with more contrast, does that beat the 600PF?
Question though. So I did trade my Zf for the Z6iii (for the ergonomics), but I see so many people complaining about its DR. I’m no professional, but I do take to landscape shooting, a lot more than wildlife. What are your thoughts on the DR, is it that noticeably bad? I do print up 36x24’s, but that was on my old Olympus camera and the landscapes looked ok. And I can’t afford a Z8, so can the Z6iii be a good all rounder?
Do you guys think the Canon RF100-400mm F5.6-8 $650 would make good self-videos/portraits of me on the beach @400mm with a big sunrise or moonrise in the background? Canon R8.
The Nikon is sharper by far, and in a nice way rather than the gross oversharpened digital way. Seems to have more 3D pop too, except maybe in low light. Even in the HD 240p side by side comparison, the Nikon has it. I forget if the Nikon is still doing raw in that mode? Or if the Nikon's HD 240 is being downsampled from 5k or 6k? Or maybe the prime is sharper? But sharper is much better when we're examining tiny details on feathers that are hard to see so clearly for so long irl.
For which genre though? Wildlife? Or studio work, street, macro? Whatever it is though, always make sure to carry the 24-120 f4 S in your bag, it’s a wonderful jack of all trades.
If you want lighter and comparable prime lens for Sony E mount, you should definitely try the 300 f2.8 with 2x teleconverter ! Seems to be very sharp even with the tele, f5.6 and same range of price as your Nikon 600 f6.3. Wondering why you did not buy that before investing into Nikon as you already had the A7SIII with similar or better specs than the Z6III ! Maybe you did it in purpose to make us talk, you’re so good at that game 😜
@@cameraconspiracies you are right, new the Sony 300 is actually 1500€ more including the teleconverter than the 600 Nikon. But when you already have a Sony boby, it is actually less expensive than to buy the lens plus the new body, even with the big discount you had 😜 But I see you are pretty happy with the Nikon system (except that top left button) and lens quality. Also curious if the 300 worth its price compared to other brands prime, even paired with the x2 ! I didn’t know teleconverters have an effect on stab, you already tested that ?
@@guilainbihan6823 Not in Canada. Sony 300 with tele is $10,170. Nikon 600mm is $7345. And with my discount it was only $5795. Plus selling the 200-600mm and 1.4x tele, I'm not spending much. And yes, teleconverters in Sony are terrible for stabilization and would definitely affect image quality. Everyone knows 2x teles are a joke, 1.4x max.
@@cameraconspiracies wow the price difference is significantly bigger, I understand better why you made this choice, not the same in France. Hope you made a good deal with your 200-600 ! Also have this beast but I stoped using it handheld, only with a monopod I recently bought (Ulanzi TT35). Actually, with the original ballhead tilted on the side to make it like a wimberley monopod head, and once the lens is well balanced on it, it works very well. And suficient for my needs as a tripod or hiking sticks. But I would enjoy lighter telephoto lens of course, to be able to move more freely ! Didn’t know that the teleconverters affect stab, only knew about image quality. Will see if I try this 300 one day or if I change my system, depending on the nexts « perfect » cameras we will enjoy to hate with you ahah. Thanks for the replies, love your show 😉
It is quite well-known that for wildlife, you will struggle to beat Nikon Tele primes. The 600 6.3 z prime will destroy the 300 with 2x Tele. Even in Nikon world, it is the same, no short prime with 2x Tele will compete against a longer prime.
@@bsc001 Yeah they need to catch up in this respect. Allow users to choose between hard saves vs bookmark system and allow for the custom settings to save drive modes. Doesn't make sense to limit customers in 2024 because their DLSRs had less options in the past and the competition allows for these types of things.
It seems like a z8 would be even better for you. Better dynamic range, 8k60p for even more cropability, only ~150g heavier. I think it has the custom banks that could let you switch video modes easier. Only downside is a 2.3x crop for pixel:pixel 4k120. And cost, but used prices are getting pretty attractive.
@@cameraconspiracies I am wondering though, if Nikon might not update z8 and z9 FW to include this in the near future, seeing they are all running on the same processor. Keep an eye out for it. I am expecting a new z9 FW to drop in the near future, rumours indicate significant upgrade to the AF, probably to counter the R5ii and R1, it there might be other changes, like faster HD fps. I will remind you, if I remember, once it drops.
3D pop is a compositional feature, not a lens nor camera feature. You are probably thinking more about the micro contrast, which neither cameras are particularly good at since modern sensors just absolutely destroys any fine colour details.
No contest here. The Nikon setup is far superior. The biggest difference between the Z 600 PF and Z 800 PF - other than the obvious 200mm focal length difference - is that the Z 800 PF gets way more 3D pop and subject isolation.
also I was testing the z6 mark 3 this side and noticed that you can add video modes to the i menu to should maybe look at setting up the custom controls in the menu under the F2 menu option I believe, only had it for a little bit though do believe they expanded the i menu to now also include switching video modes
The linear focus feature can be found in the Controls section of compatible Z series mirrorless cameras’ custom settings menu under “f9: Focus ring rotation range.” (f10 on Z6iii) By default, this option will be set to “Non-linear,” but you can choose between any of the 12 preset degrees of rotation. If “f9: Focus ring rotation range” is grayed out in your camera’s menu, your lens may not be compatible with the linear focus function or may require a firmware update. In Nikon Z series mirrorless cameras and lenses that support the linear focus function*, you can choose from any one of 12 possible rotation increments, from 90 degrees, for rapid movement between points, to 720 degrees, for scenes that require slower, precise focus racking.

Perhaps there’s a TC-1.4 in your future? 840mm at a relatively small additional cost that comes very close to the sharpness of the 800mm f/6.3 prime might be the way to go. Yeah, you lose a stop but you keep the weight and expense way down.
oh oh Z6iii just looks like a G9ii image dynamic range and noise
Try assigning the function buttons or rings to switch video modes on the Nikon 600pf lens. Love using mine due to great sharpness, size and weight.
i’m debating on the nikon 400mm, 600mm or that sigma 500mm
How about a used like new 500PF for $1500
11:00 the cinema was ours
Sigma has 500mm f5.6 that is highly regarded. Could be a decent matchup.
The toneh is much better on the Nikon, the Sony just felt off, not as smooth and busy.
Now you can travel into the artic and film the wildlife.
Waiting on his Polar Bear expedition in Manitoba, the first encounter might be all we get though 😅
@@ItsWillLee great content ahead! 🐻
Where's my fujifilm 500 prime?
Use a tripod and turn the dials. I guess Nikon don't expect you to turn the dials every time.
Wow, you witnessed Rocket the raccoon from Guardians of the Galaxy 100,000 extra thumbs up.
blessings and love
BTW I am looking for the Z28-400 for discreet travel wildlife trip, don't see much reviews yet?
I have looked at it to, but a much better solution, of course much bigger cash-splash, would be the 24-120 f4 as a general travel Lense, and the 100-400 4.5-5.6 as the telephoto zoom. Significantly better than the 28-400.
First. Yeah, me again. I'm the first person in the world to receive CC. This makes me happy.
😂 nice comparison you had me lmao a couple times. Good stuff. New sub
The image quality in video between these 2 systems is not different only because of the glass you are using. You forget that the more megapixels in the nikon sensor will give you better (sharper) video when it downsamples from 6k when sony is only using 12mp at best. That nikon setup looks sick.
Nikon doesn't down sample in all modes. 4k 120p and HD 240p are likely not down sampled at all.
Maybe try the Sigma 500mm T5.6? Than we know that it's sharp but the stabilisation sucks...
Do you think they should've replaced the little screen with the dial or a button? I think that would've been better maybe.
@@sequoi_ yeah, I use it when taking low-angle shots, tri-pod use, etc. I guess it works well for me, YMMV though ;)
Sony A7S4 looking forward 😊
Not that i own a Z6 but i do own a D610 yeah old, but im sure the Nikon will have a spare button you could program to enable the functions you need so bad.
Jus one thing
PRICE
I take my Nikon and a lens
HD 240p can't do raw. Not sure if it's downsampled but it looks better than A7S III.
sony makes a lot of stuff green, except for greens .. greens are yellow
So now there are two perfect cameras in the world: the Nikon Z6 III and the Sony ASIII
Could you please do an update on the 10 best lenses for Sony and Nikon. Thank you
For which genre though? Wildlife? Or studio work, street, macro? Whatever it is though, always make sure to carry the 24-120 f4 S in your bag, it’s a wonderful jack of all trades.
@@bsc001 whatever Kasey thinks is the best. So probably 3D Pop in video
With that amount of money on gear, people would have rendered 3d animals that fetch a pretty dollar without needing validation.
I think the only time you might miss sony is when shooting in dark.
It's way more expensive and would be much less stable with 2x teleconverter.
Even in Nikon world, it is the same, no short prime with 2x Tele will compete against a longer prime.
you traded your SONY for movie money?
why nikon bokeh is better the same 6.3
14:30 it's called menu banks on the z8/z9, probbably wont come to the z6 because its User Profile BS
Yeah, the MenuBanks are available on those Nikon bodies that doesn’t have the U1/2/3 selector switch. T’was the same on the DSLR bodies.
No HD 240p.
I will remind you, if I remember, once it drops.
genius stuff my friend...
S-Log3 loses the 3D pop compared to Standard PP Off. You should see it side by side and you’ll be surprised.
0:12 that was so funny XD! and OG!
Fuji XT5 HD 240P is king 😢❤
also I was testing the z6 mark 3 this side and noticed that you can add video modes to the i menu to should maybe look at setting up the custom controls in the menu under the F2 menu option I believe, only had it for a little bit though do believe they expanded the i menu to now also include switching video modes
go buy red dot scope and mount it on camera, game changer for wildlife

Wow, did NOT see that coming…
The linear focus feature can be found in the Controls section of compatible Z series mirrorless cameras’ custom settings menu under “f9: Focus ring rotation range.”
(f10 on Z6iii)
By default, this option will be set to “Non-linear,” but you can choose between any of the 12 preset degrees of rotation.
You have to get Sigma 500mm F5.6 for Sony now :D. And compare it with A7SIII to Nikki boy :D
Kasey, it looks like you're underexposing the Nikon consistently. I would try raising exposure
Nikons are generally ok (and prefer) going ETTL. They generally handle recovery from shadows better than from highlights.
I fear the day poor Kasey gets robbed blind on the streets of Toronto.
Haha, I know eh 😅
If it was 15-20 years ago, he would've left Tommy Thompson park in his underwear,, at most 😅.
They'd take your clothes too..now go walk out of a park and start explaining lol 😅
Monkey strength can't stop bullets, stay safe Kasey ❤
Sony can't do apsc mode in video? do you even RTFM brah? 6:26
Clear image zoom.
Doesn't work in 4k 120p or HD 240p.
Maybe Sony is gonna open the vault of alien tech again soon. Or maybe this is it.
Try Vivid with +2 or more saturation on Nikon
that's a crime.
Ken, is that you 😂
I've got a Z8 and 180-600mm... As good as the zoom is it isn't as good as your 600 prime.
