Even is this not the regular repertoire for Corelli, he does it in a marvelous commanding way. I heard once that Lucia di Lammermoor was written by Donizetti for an heroic voice; when hearing to Franco Corelli, I start beleiving this...Bravo!!!!
@ John Schofield I agree with you, Corelli is very good, as usually, but the role was written for an heroic tenor (Heldentenor), what Corelli was not. Just try it with del Monaco ( ruclips.net/video/InrpZh8Eh8k/видео.html ) and you will see the difference.
@@aetion sorry, but this was not written for an heroic tenor voice; even if you need a big voice for singing this Donizetti opera "Lucia di Lammermoor", you need to be a lirico tenor (best for this Fillipeschi, Pavarotti and Kraus; Del Monaco was the best tenor for Norma and Otello,in were he wss superb!!!).Receive my best regards.

Previously, he only sung two arias from the opera: "Fra poco a me ricovero" in the 1956 film "Suprema Confessione" and "Tombe degli avi miei" in Recording with RAI and Lyric Orchestra and Chorus of Cetra of Torino, also in 1956. Since the performance on January 21st 1971 was a private tape, and the cheer from the audiences, "Bravo Franco", as well as the recording quality implies that this was taken from the living stage performance, we can assume that he sang this with MET in the full opera on January 11th 1971.
Admire Corelli's technique. Admire the background work he put into perfecting his singing. Admire the discipline. Not a suitable role - but what an artist!
Corelli's Edgardo will be arrested at the spot in Act 1 because he will surely alert the whole castle. However, when Edgardo throws the ring, or when Edgardo cries on the graves of his ancestors or commits suicide, Corelli interprets the role pretty well.
My favorite tenor is Corelli; a stunning powerhouse in this, but I find I prefer the emotional approach of early tenors for this aria, Tito Schipa, Beniamino Gigli, Aurelian’s Pertile,…not sure that Donizetti would have agreed with me. 😂❤️

A true artist can own almost any role deemed not suitable for him, he can just create something absolutely different and unique.. so did FC in "leggero" repertoir... imho..
